North Star
Honesty
Read the passage then answer
the questions below.
The Little Dipper
Polaris, otherwise known
as the North Star, is one of
the most well-known stars.
It is called the North Star
because it shines directly above the
North Pole and can be seen only in
the Northern Hemisphere. The North
Star never seems to move, and all the
other constellations appear to revolve
around it. Because of its position in the
sky, Polaris has been used for many
years as a navigational tool. People look
to the North Star to give them direction, and
sailors use it to help navigate the oceans.
The North Star
2
The Big Dipper
3
The easiest way to find Polaris is to find the Big Dipper in the northern part of the sky.
The stars that form the outer edge of the Big Dipper’s cup are called the pointer stars
because they point directly to the North Star. Follow an imaginary line from these two stars,
and it will lead you to Polaris, which is the brightest star in the Little Dipper.
4. What is the main idea of the story?
A. It is the biggest star
_____________________________
B. It is always in the same position in the sky
_____________________________
C. It cannot be found easily
D. It is in the South Pole

Day
Courage means doing the right
thing even when it is difficult and
you are afraid. Courage includes being
brave and taking a stand.
Value
On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks got on the
bus after a long day at work. At that time busses were
segregated, which meant that black people and white
people were separated because of the color of their skin.
Black people were expected to give up their seats to
white passengers if a white person was standing. A few
stops after Rosa sat down, a white passenger got on the
bus. When the bus driver noticed that a white person was
standing he called back to the four black people and told them to give up their seats. The
other three got up and stood at the back of the bus, but Rosa refused. She had given up
her seat before and it was not right, it was not fair. On this day Rosa stood up for what she
believed in and did not budge. The police were called and Rosa was arrested. The people
in the community were so inspired by Rosa’s act of courage that they organized a bus
boycott and stopped riding the bus. Finally, the rules for riding the bus were changed and
made fair for everyone. Rosa’s decision to fight for what she believed in was an important
moment in the fight for the civil rights of all African Americans. Rosa is a hero and is
considered the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.
Circle each courageous act.
