Volume 2, Issue 5 March Greetings, As we head into the spring months, I can see so much growth in our students; both academically and physically! Our fourth graders do not look like “little kids” any more, our Kindergarteners walk through the halls with poise and confidence and a few of our older students can look me straight in the eyes because they’ve grown so much. Skills that were a challenge in October have become rote and are building blocks for new lessons. It’s exciting to be a part of the constant growth and change in Hillsboro kids. March 2014 Plus One Students on a sledding night out… Linda Bisarek Plus One Coordinator There will be NO PLUS ONE on the following day: Thursday, April 17 (school will be dismissed at 1:15 on this day) Meerkats on the Kalahari… To Contact Mrs. Bisarek about all things Plus One: [email protected] 608-489-2224 EXT. 1626 or 608-462-3567 (feel free to text) Things that make you go hmmm… “If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.” -Chinese proverb Homework Academic time at Plus One is from 3:45-4:45 each day. In grades K-2, this time is divided into homework, math enrichment, and reading enrichment sessions. Exciting Family Activity Coming April 10 In grades 3-5, the entire hour is devoted to completing homework with individual activities available when students complete all their assignments. Please note that Plus One does not guarantee that all homework will be finished in the time we have. Please continue to check folders and ask your student about assignments. Students cannot be kept out of the lifelong skills activity from 4:45-5:30 to complete homework. A Very Special Presentation Clear your calendar for the evening of April 10. Understanding Wildlife, a non-profit group from Ohio will be coming to Hillsboro to educate students about tropical rainforests and the animals that live there. Students will experience a presentation during the day that includes birds, snakes and monkeys. An evening presentation will also be available for $5/person in the High School gym. Understanding Wildlife comes highly recommended. We hope to see you there! On Tuesday, February 26, Plus One students heard about the recent trip of Greg and Kristi Zimmerman. The Zimmermans traveled to Liberia in Africa to assist children at a local orphanage and school. Our students were shocked and amazed at the conditions Liberian students learn and live in. Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman told about the small amounts of food, the lack of clean drinking water and the absence of school supplies at the Borto School. The Zimmermans will be returning to Liberia this summer and are collecting supplies to take to the children there. Below is a partial list that we will be collecting at Plus One. Small toys and dolls Outdoor balls (deflated) School Supplies Arts and Craft Supplies Playing Cards Soap Towels Toothbrushes Toothpaste Books We our Plus One helpers! We will also be setting up a “Penny Jar” to help offset shipping costs for these items. Personal Note: I was SO proud of our students during the Zimmerman’s presentation. They were respectful, attentive and asked thoughtful questions. Upon hearing of the conditions of the Liberian children, they were instantly moved to action. I heard many conversations on the way out the door that night about what our kids could do to help the children they had just learned about. It reminded me what great, bighearted students we have here in Hillsboro. Mrs. B. Pick up is at the back of the building each night at 5:30. Please respect staff and be prompt.
