To create a supportive teaching and learning environment such as the one we have
here, a great many people play integral roles. I would like to thank the various individuals and teams of people of their support and involvement in making 2014 a wonderful and successful year.
Firstly, to the teachers who continue to inspire and motivate the students and provide
them with endless innovative, exciting and valuable learning experiences which stimulate and challenge your children each and every day. I know I speak on behalf of the
students when I say huge thank you for a wonderful year of learning, your support and
loyalty to the school. You all truly embrace the Reddam Way.
To the wonderful parent body, your support of your child and of the school that you
show is incredible and I know that your children and the teachers appreciate your role
and effort. Many of you have also gone well beyond the expectation and we sincerely
thank you.

KINDERGARTEN
The Kindergarten children read the story, My Brave Year of Firsts by Jamie Lee Curtis &
Laura Cornell. It is a lovely story which celebrates the everyday bravery of trying new
things for the very first time: things like riding your bike on your own, losing your first tooth,
your first day of school and having your first athletics carnival. We had fun listening to the
story and then asked the children about some of their “Brave Firsts” that they experienced in their Kindergarten year. We had some interesting and insightful responses.
Weston: We learnt how to read our own books properly.
Darcy: We learnt how to share in the playground.
Jamie: We had our first chance to play games that included everyone.
Alice: Making new friends.
Hollie: Learning our numbers and how to write them.
James: The first time we learnt how to spell words.
It is with a mixed feeling of pride and sadness that we see this Kindergarten year come to
an end. Sadness because it is time to say goodbye to our special children and immense
pride as we see how far each of them has grown and progressed.

YEAR 1
In HSIE and Science we have been learning about FOOD. We have researched information about wheat and how it can found in a number of foods, such as cereals, cakes
and bread. We made individual books about how the wheat travels from the farm to our
table and the processes involved. Once we had completed the unit, we baked bread
which we enjoyed eating while it was still warm!
We also did some observational drawings of fruit and vegetables using oil pastels. The
students had to look closely at shape, colour, size and position. They kept revisiting their
work to add more detail. The results were outstanding!
As part of PDH the class kept a food diary for an entire week. They had to write about
what they ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks. They then had to
evaluate their diary by answering questions such as: Which meal was the healthiest and
why? Which food do you think was bad for your teeth?

YEAR 2
This week Year 2 have looked at things from a different perspective. First they built a 3D model of
a school using blocks, cans, water bottles and anything else they could find. Next they looked at
it from above, they learnt this was called a birds eye view. After studying the model carefully they
then attempted to sketch the model using just 2D shapes to represent each part. It was a fun activity and taught the students not only about perspective but team work too.
YEAR 3
This week, the exciting days have continued in Year 3. Even though it is the end of the year, our
students have been working responsibly to complete their final activities and have enjoyed their
last days together as a group. This week's highlights have been the Christmas and Chanukah
presentations and the special Prize Giving evening. We were very proud of the students as we
watched them all sing, perform and receive their wonderful awards. Congratulations on an
amazing year to all the students.
Here are some of our student’s highlights in Year 3:
Ben Herz: Year 3 was a really fun year because the teachers let us do amazing things like go to
the park and the basketball court. Being in Year 3 is a wonderful experience and we all love the
teachers.
Noah Shelest: One of my highlights of the
year was all the fun excursions our teachers
took us on.
Ben Landa: Music camp was fun because we
got to try new things, new activities and new
instruments. The flying fox and initiative
course were awesome.
Zoe Kertesz: The highlight for me was the excursion to the Sydney Eye Tower. We saw the
whole of Sydney and went up a speedy
elevator. I loved Year 3.

YEAR 4
This week in HSIE, Year 4 students have been studying Kosciuszko National Park. The focus
has been on identifying and analysing the location, landscape features, recreational
features, eco-friendly tourist elements and the flora and fauna of the area. Mapping skills
learnt in Term 3 have been effectively utilised to interpret a variety of map styles. Students
have also developed their knowledge about the importance and impact of both indigenous, and feral, flora and fauna species. Year 4 students who have previously visited the
Kosciuszko National Park have gained new insights and perspectives on the area.
Fantastic environmental awareness Year 4!
WATER POLO
Last weekend Reddam had a huge weekend of Water Polo achieving some fantastic
results in the Grand Finals of the Eastern Suburbs Schools Water Polo Competition.
The boys swept the pool and won all three divisions. The Primary Boys defeated Scots
College 6-2, The Middle School Boys
defeated Marcellin College 6-2 and
the Senior Boys knocked off
Waverley College in extra time
10-9.
The Senior Girls lost their Grand Final
on the buzzer but played some
excellent Water Polo.
It has been an incredible season
and I would like to thanks all coaches, parents and students for their efforts this term.

DEBATING
The Finals Evening for the 2014 Inter-house Debating Competition was held on Thursday
November 27. It was an exciting conclusion to a marvellous season of debating. The
guest adjudicator for the evening was Mr Dean Hattingh, who was tasked with making
some very difficult decisions. Points were awarded for both arguments and rebuttals, requiring students to think on their feet. Impressive critical thinking skills were demonstrated,
along with wonderful team work skills. The evening was professionally chaired by five fantastic Year 3/4 students; Alex Azzi, Persia Behnia, Alessi Fletcher, Zeya Kuban and Amira
Shields. The winning teams on the night were Year 3/4 Bronte—Amber Cleary, Oliver Pires,
Isolder Rydge and Mark Ward and Year 5/6 Bondi—Hamish Dawson, Gabriel Gotsis,
Charlie Roberts and Lara Topper. Thank you to all the debating students and parents for
your commitment and support.

Red Balloon- Lyrics
by Isabella Nesci (Year 6)
Throughout the year Isabella Nesci
has been proactive in composing
lyrics to assist in the learning of the
piece ‘Red Balloon’ by Anne
McGinty. The Year 5/6 Concert
band benefited greatly from her
initiative and has enjoyed singing
her lyrics to Anne McGinty’s melody.

ROBOTICS
This term the Stage One children have had a fantastic time in robotics. Robotics is a combination of Maths, English, Technology, Language and most importantly team work. They
have enjoyed building Wedo Lego models that provide excellent learning opportunities
in construction and programming. It is wonderful to see their skills developing as they
worked together to build their favourite lego models. What a fantastic group of students.
Congratulations Year One and Year Two!
MATHEMATICS
This week the Years 5 and 6 classes practiced optical art. Optical Art (op art) is a form of
abstract art that gives the illusion of movement by the precise use of pattern and colour,
or in which conflicting patterns emerge and overlap. We drew inspiration from Bridget
Riley and Victor Vasarely who are its most famous exponents.
To enhance this lesson we set up iPads to take time lapse stills of the students so that they
could see their progress after completing their art.

LIBRARY
I have had an amazing term in the library with our talented and wonderful students and
their very special families. As the year draws to close, I would like to thank all the parents
who have supported the library, either through donating books or encouraging their
children to become frequent users of the library.
In particular, my gratitude goes to Charlie Roberts and his family for donating dozens of
wonderful books to our library.
Summer reading can be such a relaxing luxury and libraries are bursting with the latest
‘good reads’. Here are some suggestions to keep the family reading this summer:
Woollahra Library:
Kids Club (for school aged children)
Kids Club is a fun-filled program for primary aged children held once a month at Watsons
Bay Library (on the last Wednesday of the month) and Double Bay Library (on the last
Thursday of the month). The sessions start at 4pm and goes for just under an hour. Each
session offers something new and exciting to do! Guest presenters, games, cool crafts,
pizza and light refreshments! Please note that bookings are required.
Book online or call 9391 7100.
Randwick Library:
Beach Library
Randwick City Council marked the first day of summer with the opening of Sydney's, and
likely Australia's, first free Beach Library on renowned Coogee Beach.
Located on the lower beach promenade right next to the sand, the six-metre wide, freestanding timber bookshelf constructed by Council's carpenters will stock hundreds of fiction and non-fiction books and magazines in various languages and genres, ensuring
there is something for everyone to pick up and enjoy.
The Coogee Beach Library will be open during Lifeguard patrol hours of 7am to 7pm. This
unique, free service will be on offer to residents and visitors until the end of summer in
February 2015.
Calling all young readers!
Join us at our Summer Reading Club launch on Monday 15 December at Bowen
