8th Grade Technology and Writing
Second Quarter Syllabus
By the end of the second quarter (Dec. 21), you must have all
of the following tasks/assignments completed and submitted:
o Create a OneDrive account if you don't already have one
o Visit my classroom homepage, check out the "Files/Links"
section for Quarter #2, and watch the instructional videos
about our assignments for this quarter. Visit the website any
time you have questions or can't remember how to do
something!
o Completely label your OneDrive Tour handout and turn it in by
Nov. 4 (one week before interim grades are due).
o On OneDrive – and working with one other person if you would
like – create a travel brochure (using the proper template) that
includes
o a location name (you may invent a resort, country, city, etc.
OR choose someplace real)
o main photo (again, you might create a photo OR use an
existing photo)
o at least three additional photos with captions containing
details about the location (and photos of the location)
o business contact information (may be fictional)
o a special offer for your potential guests (you will invent
something fictional)
o SUBMIT by SHARING on OneDrive (share with
[email protected])

o On Open Office or Microsoft Word – and working with one other
person if you would like – create and print a newspaper article
that includes
o a clear focus/topic/report (may be real or fictional)
o columns (you may write in two or three columns)
o justification (alignment style) of columns
o at least one photograph
o headline
o byline (name or names of the author or authors)
o at least one quotation (may be fabricated, but must be
formatted correctly)
o one statistic (may be real or fictional)
o PRINT and TURN IN to Mrs. Leis
o On OneDrive, using the proper template, write a one-page
journal or story or report. The formatting must follow these
guidelines:
o 12-point, Times New Roman font
o 1-inch margins
o MLA heading
o Paragraphs must be indented using the TAB button
o Title must be centered
o The body of the text must be double-spaced
o Include your last name and page number in the upperright corner
o Use only one space after periods and other pieces of end
punctuation

o On OneDrive, using the proper template, create a menu. You
may work with one other person if you'd like. You may not copy
an existing menu; this menu should be completely from your
imagination! It must include the following:
o a creative restaurant name and concept (by "concept," I
mean "overall idea")
o at least ten menu items that include item descriptions
o at least five photographs or other images
o at least four categories of items (for example, beverages,
appetizers, salads, items for children, entrees, and
desserts)
o SUBMIT by SHARING on OneDrive (share with
[email protected])
o On OneDrive, using the proper template, create a tri-fold
brochure for a business that you have invented. You may work
with one other person if you'd like. This brochure must be
original; do not copy an existing brochure! It must include the
following:
o a creative business name and concept
o a clear description of the business itself
o business details like key clients, services offered, etc.
o at least five photographs or other images
o business contact information (including a website, phone
number, and address)
o a quote from a satisfied customer (properly quoted and
cited; may be fictional, of course)
o a quote from the "owner" or "owners" of the business (that
would be you and your partner)
o clear and logical organization

o On OneDrive, using the proper template, write a formal
business letter. You may work with one other person if you'd
like. This letter must be original; do not copy an existing letter!
It must include the following:
o the date
o sender's information (this is your own information)
o recipient's information (select an actual business and use
their actual information)
o a proper greeting
o at least three paragraphs of "body," written in a formal
tone. (You are not actually going to send these, but I would
like you to include your actual thoughts regarding the
business you have chosen.)
o a proper closing

o On OneDrive, write an original poem. You may work with
another student if you would like. The poem must
o be at least 15 lines long
o include at least two different font colors
o be centered
o include at least three graphics that don't interfere with the
text or formatting
o include a title
o include the author's name (or authors' names)
o include at least two different (and LEGIBLE) fonts
