KEEP YOUR DOG
CALM & SAFE
WHEN THE
GHOULS VISIT
Claire, a Portuguese Water Dog, started her puppy training at 9 weeks old. Dog
Mom, Leslie Cooke, couldn't be happier
with the results. They're BOTH really
smart cookies & make an awesome team!
 Keep your dog away from the
door when trick-or-treaters
arrive. This is the ideal time
to practice the Place command!
 Keep the candy out of your
dog’s reach. Chocolate is a no
-no for dogs and wrappers or
sticks are choking and blockage hazards.
 If you dress up your dog, be
“My biggest concern was
learning all the commands
like sit, down, stay and come.
But we have learned so much
more! Claire, at 13 weeks,
can sit, down, leave it, and is
almost fully potty trained,”
boasts Leslie.
“I had concerns about her
jumping up on people, especially my grandchildren, and
Cathy taught me how to use
the leash as a tool to teach
Claire good manners,” says
Leslie.
We played a couple of
games with Claire so
the "Leave It" command was effective
and fun. She caught on

sure his/her costume fits
properly — not too big or
too tight — and doesn’t
inhibit walking, seeing, smelling or hearing. Also be sure
your dog isn’t too warm in
the costume.
 Signs of stress: heavy panting,
sweaty foot pads, cowering,
wrinkles around the eyes and
mouth. If your dog experiences any of these, take him/her
to a quiet area of the house &
calm with treats or play with
a favorite toy.
Have a fun & safe
Halloween!
Congratulations, Leslie & Claire!
Appa, a 7 month old Airedale Terrier, had
one main issue: he loved people a little too
much. He showed his friendly enthusiasm by
jumping on them, mouthing their hands, and
wiggling up against them nearly to the point of
knocking them over. The “Say Hi” command
was a must. Now Appa greets people properly
and makes friends a lot quicker.
“Walks are easier & I take Appa to my office every day,” says Appa’s Pet Parent, John O’Brien. “Before training no one wanted to be
around him because he always jumped up & grabbed their hands in
his mouth. Now, everyone loves him and wants to be around my
well-behaved dog.”
No more jumping
or mouthing!
Way to go,
Appa &
John!

Beyond-Basic Obedience Commands
One of the most fascinating facts about dogs is that they are naturalborn students. They love to learn and do so throughout their lives.
Think your dog knows all he needs & wants to? Think again! Here are
some commands I use with my dogs that you may not have heard of.
“Say Hi”— Greet a person without jumping, licking, mouthing or
sniffing a crotch. (Such a dog thing!)
“Touch” — Put your paw or nose on an object. I use this for selfdispensing treat toys. Agility instructors use this to help a dog get familiar with obstacles like coming straight down a teeter totter.
“Cross” — Walk quickly from one side of the road to another; no

sniffing or dilly-dallying. I use this while walking my dogs off leash
around my neighborhood. Can also be used on-leash; just walk quickly.
“Sidewalk” — This is another great command for on-leash or offleash. My definition for my dogs is that they can walk on the sidewalk
or tree lawn, but not into someone’s front yard. Neighbors appreciate
this; no pee or pooh in their yard.
