APRIL NEWSLETTER GRADE 1 MRS. HAMILTON 4-4-16 During Math time we will work on creating a graph; writing observations about a graph; measuring/drawing line segments for the nearest centimeter; identifying the geometric solids - cubes and cylinders; and learning the difference of one (7-6,4-3,9-8,etc) subtraction facts. Our Reading theme is “What’s the Weather” with the main story called Stormy Weather. Skills to be introduced include: comparing and contrasting (alike and different), learning that words can have 2 meanings, and understanding a telephone directory. High frequency words to know are: cold, predict, extreme, sound, great, warm, know and their. Listen as your first grader reads the take home booklets this week. Try to have them read each evening. Grammar lessons will focus on the verbs “go” and “do”. These verbs have different forms to tell about the present and the past – go/goes (present) and went (past); do/does (present) and did (past). While working on our Writing, we will focus on opinion pieces. Learning to state our opinion and give reasons as to why we feel that way. Spring Pictures taken on Wednesday. “Sprout Eggs” at the public library on Saturday at noon. A BOGO Book Fair next week in the school’s library from 8:00-4:00 each day and 8:00-3:00 on Fri.
