3-on-3 Basketball
Tournament Rules
All participants must have & show their valid KENT STATE UNIVERSITY ID before the start of every
game. Anyone without an ID will not be allowed to participate. No exceptions.
Current National Federation of State High Schools Association rules shall apply, with the following
clarifications and modifications in effect:
GENERAL INFORMATION:




All participants must be Kent State University students and meet the eligibility requirements
outlined in the Intramural Sports Participants Handbook. All participants must present a valid
Kent State University ID (FlashCard). NO ID, NO PLAY!
All games will be played in the Student Recreation & Wellness Center.
Each team will consist of 3 players; a minimum of 2 is required to avoid a forfeit.
A player may only play on one (1) team in the tournament.
EQUIPMENT:





Intramural Sports will provide a game ball, to be used during game play ONLY. Teams are
responsible for providing their own basketballs for warm-up, which may be signed-out from
the SRWC Equipment Issue desk.
Non-marking athletic shoes must be worn. No sandals, boots or non-athletic shoes will be
allowed.
Teams shall wear jerseys that are of like color with numbers on the back. Team jerseys must
contrast with the jerseys of the opposing team. If teams are wearing the same color jersey, the
Home team on the gamesheet will wear the provided scrimmage jerseys. Jerseys may not be tied
in a manner that creates any type of knot. A team member shall not remove the jersey and/or
pants/shirt in the visual confines of the playing area during the game.
o If the provided Intramural scrimmage jerseys are worn by a team, those players’
FlashCards will be held until the borrowed jersey is returned to the scorekeeper after the
game, or at the conclusion of participation in the tournament.
Players may wear a headband made of soft pliable material. No other headwear will be allowed.
All jewelry must be removed, and can NOT be taped over.
o Only Medical Alert bracelets and/or necklaces will be permitted, and must be taped to the
body, leaving vital information visible.
GAME FORMAT:



The game will begin promptly at start time and time limits will be enforced! Participants should
remain ready to play at all times. No more than five (5) minutes will be waited for a team. After
five minutes, the team will forfeit the game and it will not be played.
Games will be played to twenty-one (21) points or for twenty-five (25) minutes, whichever comes
first. At twenty-five minutes, the leading team will be declared the winner. If the score is tied, play
will continue in a sudden-death over-time from the point of interruption when time expires. The
first team to score will be declared the winner.
Time-outs: No time-outs may be called except as need for injury.
SCORING:
 Normal two-point baskets will count as one point. Normal three-point baskets will count as two
points.
 No free throws will be allowed. Called fouls will result in the offended team earning possession of
the ball.

GAME RULES:
 This tournament is self-officiated. Supervisors can be asked for rule clarification; however,
they cannot resolve disputes. Disagreements that cannot be resolved will be replayed
from the point of interruption before the dispute.
 Scorekeepers will be responsible for keeping the score and the game time; their record is final.
 Players must check-in with the Scorekeeper, including those who arrive late must check-in at an
appropriate break in play, and wait to be allowed by the scorekeeper before entering the game.
 Violations will result in loss of possession. The following common violations should be enforced
by both teams:
o Traveling: running with the ball
o Illegal dribble (double dribble): A player cannot dribble a second time after his/her first
dribble has ended.
o Three (3) seconds: An offensive player cannot remain in the lane area for more than
three (3) seconds. This rule applies to any foot in the lane or on the lines marking the
boundary of the lane.
o Closely guarded: A player cannot, while closely guarded, hold or dribble the ball for five
(5) seconds.
o Basket interference: Players may not touch the ball or basket (including the net) when the
ball is on or within the basket; touch the ball when it is touching the cylinder having the
ring as its lower base; touch the ball outside the cylinder while reaching through the
basket from below.
o Goaltending: Players may not touch the ball during a field goal try or tap while it is in
downward flight entirely above the basket ring level and has the possibility of entering the
basket in flight.
o Excessive swinging of arms/elbows: Players may not excessively swing arms or elbows
regardless of contact.
 Other rules to note:
o After every change of possession, the team with control of the ball must “check it” by
taking it beyond the free-throw line extended (ball and both feet). Teams who score
without doing so will not be awarded points but will retain possession for a “check” from
behind the designated line on the court.
o When one team scores, the other team will be awarded possession for a check-in from
behind the designated line on the court (loser’s ball).
o On a “check” from behind the designated line on the court after stoppage of play (scored
basket, violation, or foul), the checking player MUST pass the ball in.
AWARDS:


The winning team will advance* to the MAC 3-on-3 Intramural Challenge held at the University of

Akron on Saturday, April 5 , where they will receive a prize for winning the KSU tournament and
have the opportunity to win the overall championship prize. (*Pending eligibility rules and any
additional requirements are met.)
The winning team will also receive Intramural Sports Champion T-shirts.
THE INTRAMURAL STAFF HAS THE RIGHT TO STOP A CONTEST IF THEY DEEM IT NECESSARY
