Besides regular Salaat and Dua, do you remember the last time you set aside time to “just be” with Allaah? For some, it maybe regular basis, while for others it maybe infrequent. And some may even be asking themselves what is Itikaf? Brothers and sisters, Itikah is the practice of secluding yourSis. R. Mohammed self in mediation or ibaadah and focusing solely on Allaah (SWT). The goal of Itikaf is to forget all life’s mundane affairs and focus solely on the attributes of Allaah and his love for you. Prophet Mohammed (SAW) practiced Itikaf regularly and encouraged all Muslims to do so as well. In general, there are three requirements for performing Itikaf: (1) Belief in Islam, (2) Your intention or Niyyah, and (3) Fasting. For the most part, Itikaf is conducted at a mosque, but exceptions are possible depending on the type of Itikaf and accommodations available at the mosque. Types of Itikaf include: 1. Wajib: this Itikaf is performed when you ask Allaah (STW) for something and it is granted. When this occurs, this Itikaf becomes compulsory. The sooner its performed, the better. 2. Nafil: this Itikaf can be performed at any place or time, for any period. For example, it is stated in Hadith, the best time to perform this type of Itikaf is immediately after Fajr Salaat and at Tahajjud. It is stated that Prophet Mohammed (SWT) spent a large amount of time in seclusion and mediation in Mount Hira. It was during this time in Itikaf that angel Jibreel (SAW) appeared before the prophet and the revelation of the Qu’raan began. 3.Sunnah: this Itikaf takes place in the last ten (10) nights of Ramadan. Performing Itikaf during this period is especially gratifying because the blessings bestowed on the person is amplified 70 times. If performed on the night of Lailatul Qadr, the benefits are even greater. And remember Allaah (SWT) orders us to seek night of power as stated in Surah Al Qadr (Chapter 97): “Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem: Innaa anzalnaahu fee lailatil qadr, Wa maa adraaka ma lailatul qadr, Lailatul qadri khairum min alfee shahr, Tanaz zalul malaa-ikatu war roohu feeha bi izni-rab bihim min kulli amr, Salaamun hiya hattaa mat la’il fajr”. Surah Al Qadr can be summarized as such: The Qu’raan was revealed in the night of power. The night of power is better than 1000 months, or 83 years and 4 months. When Allaah (SWT) says “better”, he means “more than that”. And what happens on this night? The angels and the rue comes down on earth with the permission of Allaah (SWT) and brings salamaat: Allaah’s (SWT) peace, tranquility, acceptance, greetings to us. And it is your opportunity to prayer, read Qu’raan, make dua, strengthen your ibaadah and thank Allaah (SWT) for all he has done for you. And the connection between Lailatul Qadr and Itikaf? We invited my beloved Rev. Thomas Graf friend and colleague, Sheik Shafayat Mohammad to give a teaching on Islam, followed by dialogue with those present, leading into an Interfaith time of prayer and then fellowship in our parish hall. Those who attended seemed to benefit much from this honest attempt to come together and learn from one another. Well over 100 people from many different faith traditions (Even an atheist) attended. To this day, almost 10 months later, people are still commenting on what a wonderful experience it was for them and for our community in the Upper Keys. Here are two comments that surfaced surrounding this wonderful event. “I was so impressed with The Sheik and his congregation. I think it took much courage for them to come all the way down here, and to present so honestly and openly this true understanding of Islam. I think it helped much to change the fears of many who attended.” (A member of St. James the Fisherman Church.) “Thank you for putting on such a meaningful ecumenical event, I am very grateful. I thought it was a wonderful afternoon, particularly in the way it created real dialogue and aired issues (as well as deep seated feelings) not usually talked about in a room with all parties present. What a great opportunity, both to ask questions and to hear so many passionate prayers from different corners of the world. And how unique for everyone there to hear how powerful and peaceful and meditative that Islam call to prayer could be. I bet many of the people in the room had either never heard it before or had any idea it could be so lovely. It affected me very much the way those deep, sonorous Buddhist chants do, as well as some of the High Holiday prayers from my own tribal tradition. Again, many sincere thanks to you, Sheik Shafayat and Keys To Peace. It was a good step.” (Member and panelist from local Jewish Community.) Ten months later, our nation has undergone some very challenging changes. There have been some who have emerged and have attempted to be instruments of division where once we seemed to be moving towards understanding and connection. Where do we go from here? Perhaps we just continue to follow the movement of the Holy Spirit who continues to lead and guide, perhaps in ways that we may not always expect. I thought it was interesting that the week following this joyful ecumenical event, our Gospel called us to learn from another “outsider.” We heard again of the Centurion (Powerful authority figure, outside the faith of Israel.) whose faith response touched Jesus so deeply that he tells the Jews, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” And all of this happened in Capernaum, “The City of Compassion.” Continued on page 26, InShaa Allaah AL-HIKMAT Dr. Ghous Muhammad Ijma plays a most crucial role in the development of Islamic law. The existing body of Fiqh is the result of the age-long Ijtihad and Ijma process. This process is still operative and can add to the body of law. The idea that Ijma was confined to the early three generations seems to have developed in the period when the door of Ijtihad was closed. The traces of this idea are to be found in alShafi’ but he is not categorical on this point. As Ijtihad and Ijma are inter-linked, it appears that Ijma was deemed invalid when the possibility of original interpretation of law was discarded. The Medieval view that Ijam after the early three generations is invalid, is, in fact, a later concept and cannot be accepted. The major function of Ijma is to unite the divergent opinions on a problem progressively and to ascertain the truth of a Qiyas. Its other important functions may be summed up in the words of Snouck Hurgronje: “The consensus guarantees the authenticity and correct interpretation of the Koran, the faithful transmission of the Sunnah of the Prophet, the legitimate use of analogy and its results; it covers, in short, every detail of the law, including the recognized differences of the several schools.”(Coulson, N.J’ Conflicts and Tensions in Islamic Jurisprudence, Chicage, 1969, pp. 22-24) According to the classical theory of Ijma. Ijma has been defined, in the classical Fiqh-literature, in different ways. One definition says: “Ijma is an agreement of the Islamic Community on a religious point.” Another definition states: “Ijma is a consensus of opinion of the persons competent for Ijma (Ahl al-Ijma), when a religious issue arises, whether rational or legal.” A third definition runs: “Ijma is a unanimous agreement of the jurist of the Community of a particular age on a certain issue.” The first two definitions have been criticized by the later jurists themselves, while the third has been accepted as the standard definition. This is no doubt only a theoretical definition agreed upon by the jurists, and it should be noted that it does not represent the actual historical process of Ijma in Islam. This definition does not allow difference of opinion of even one jurist of the generation in which an Ijma is supposed to have taken place. The reason is that, according to the classical theory, Ijma is not complete, if even one person competent for Ijtihad (interpretation) and nazar (thinking) remains opposed to the “agreed” decision. Further, to substantiate ‘total Ijma’ it is said that Ijma is not subject to reason, but is the “privilege (karamah)” of the Community.(Abd al-Aziz alBukhari, Kashf al-Asrar ‘ala Usul al-Bazdawi, Stanbul, 1308 A.H’ vol. III, p. 227.) (14:31)….” As also concerning the children who are weak and oppressed: that ye stand firm for justice to orphans. There is not a good deed which ye do, but God is well-acquainted therewith.” (4:127) Dear sisters and brothers, we open our eyes in the morning, rattled by the sound of our alarm, we hit the snooze button and sleepily start thinking of how good and cozy it feels under our warm blanket. We start thinking of that nice, hot cup of coffee and wondering whether we have the time to eat breakfast at home, or grab something whether we’re on our way to work, or to drop off our kids to school. We finally hop out of our bed, flip the light switch on and turn on the faucet for the hot water to start running. We’ve become programmed to expect all these basic amenities to work like clockwork. We make wudhu and pray our Fajr salat. Our closet is filled with an assortment of clothes and shoes, our refrigerators also filled with food for at least one to two weeks. So far the start to our day has been filled with many blessings and Insha Allah, the rest of our day will continue with even more blessings. Most of us will have a good lunch and dinner, we will sit in air conditioned cars and offices and homes. We will have a home to come to every day, we have our family to converse, laugh and chat with throughout the day. This is the typical day for most of us. We will complain how driving to work was annoying, how work was stressful, the sisters will stress out trying to come up with a quick meal plan for dinner. At the same time, thousands of miles away, a family is awakened, hungry, cold, not knowing where the next meal will come from, not knowing if they will get a meal that day. The parents are wondering how they will take care of their children’s basic needs…just to clothe and feed them. What we consider basic amenities of water and electricity does not exist for many families in many parts of the world today. Many live in tents, they have no running water, no electricity, no medicines to take away their pain, no hot meal, no hot coffee, no warm blankets, no safety, no privacy. Coincidently, there are also many impoverished families right here in our local communities. According to various reports: 795 million people – or one in nine people in the world – do not have enough to eat. 98% of the world’s undernourished people live in developing countries. Farooq Shafi / Sunrise, Florida U.S.A He was sound asleep after completing his obligatory nightly prayer. All of a sudden, he woke up perplexed. He was puzzled about what he just saw in his dream. He got up, performed wudu (ablution) and offered two rakaats nafal (voluntary prayer) and went Bro. Farooq Shafi to bed again. After a little while, he woke up again. He had seen the same dream the second time. He performed wudu, offered his prayer and went back to sleep again. This time he woke up trembling. He had seen the same dream a third time. He immediately summoned his trusted advisor and relayed the dream to him. “The holy prophet (SAW) came in to my dreams three times. He (SAW) pointed towards two men with blue eyes and asked me to protect him (SAW) from the evil of these two men.” Both of them pondered over the dream for a while and then the noble adviser suggested not to disclose the dream to anyone and to travel towards Madinah immediately to investigate. The man was Sultan Noor Uddin Zangi, the pious, God fearing ruler of Syria in the year 1162. They loaded the camels with luggage, took a few men with them and headed for Madinah in haste. They stopped only for necessities and reached Madinah in record time. The Sultan and his companions went straight to the Prophet’s Masjid and offered two rakkat nafal salaah. Afterwards, he invited the entire population of the city of Madinah and distributed gifts among them all. He also announced a big feast at night and instructed “everyone” in the city of Madinah to attend. He had not seen the two men with blue eyes showed to him by the holy prophet (SAW) in his dream while distributing the gifts. The feats began. Meanwhile, the Sultan kept a careful eye on all attendees to recognize the two men shown to him by the Holy Prophet (SAW). The feast went on but he still did not see those two men with blue eyes. He asked curiously if anyone was left out from the feats, the crowd denied. His heart was racing. He pressed upon his inquiry again if anyone was left out. It was after his insistence the he came to know about the two westerners staying close to the Prophet’s masjid who had attended the feast. They had a public reputation of being celibates purely devoted to prayers at all times. They barely left their place of worship and were seen at the graveyard at times making du’aa for the buried. He immediately summoned them before him. One look and he knew they were the same as shown to him in the dream. He inquired of them about their identity and motives. They told a cunning story that they were pilgrims from the West, had come to perform hajj but the strong desire to stay close to the Holy Prophet (SAW) had kept them in Madinah. The Sultan visited the room where they were staying but could only find usual daily items and some scattered books. The situation left his seriously puzzled amid frequent requests for their pardon by the citizens of Madinah. He was told about their very pious nature and their continuous charity during the recent drought. The embarrassing situation remained until an idea struck the Sultan. For a Better Life By: Harun Yahya / Ankara, Turkey Submitted by: Sis. Ebru / Turkey In the Rakhine state, they live in very harsh conditions and could hardly survive; for exDr. Harun Yahya ample, they are not given a right to have a last name, to have citizenship, to perform their religious duties, to have the right to marry or to travel, or to go to school. When they make their way to the border, some of them even get shot by the Myanmar military while trying to cross the Naaf River tying Myanmar to the Bangladeshi border. As per Bangladeshi authorities, more than 2,000 are estimated to cross the border as a consequence of the increased oppression of the military. Rohingyas start a death-dealing journey to freedom and they face a threat at every step they take. Most of them get injured or lost or get killed on the way to the border, some may get killed while crossing the border. Troubles do not end here since Bangladeshi officials have reinforced border patrols lately to intercept the entry of Rohingyas inside their frontiers. In fact, what we would expect and hope is for them to embrace and protect them as refugees since their return will most probably lead to their death. When we take into consideration these facts, we realize that a very cruel system full of oppression operates in this part of the world and people are watching this with anxious and fearful eyes. Regrettably, some people in the world have left behind their conscience and never think of others’ lives or to be more frank they do not care at all as long as they can sustain a comfortable life. This is both very surprising and painful because they may one day be subject to the same fate. Mostly, they do not think they will ever be exposed to such a life. They continue to lack empathy and care for others unless they or their families experience some unexpected hardships and difficulties, or oppression. However, what makes us human is the moral conscience that God bestows upon us. Right and fair decisions can only be made with a sound, pure conscience based on the fear of God. All the people on earth are responsible for those who are oppressed even though the persecuted might be as far away as the other side of the world and that they probably may not even personally meet them even once in their lifetime. People are responsible both for the blessings they are given and the actions they leave behind as God reminds in the Qur’an: “What reason could you have for not fighting in the Way of God – for those men, women and children who are oppressed?” (4:75) As a consequence, when you see a news report in a newspaper concerning these oppressed people, do not turn the page with disregard. Keep in mind that what these poor people are going through is real. Think of what you can do, what solid steps you can take as even one conscientious and caring human being. Mar. 2017 Issue From America to Inside The Kaaba By Bro. Al Mustapha / Florida USA My dear friends, Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent as a mercy to all mankind. As believers we must strive every single day of our lives to learn more about him and his illustrious life, his great personality and his unblemished character and implement the same in our lives and the lives of our families Bro. Al Mustapha and also teach it to others. He alone is our esteemed example and role model. Allah SWT commanded us in the Quran chapter 33/21: Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow, for him who hopes for the (meeting with Allah) and the last Day and remembers Allah (God Almighty) much. It is a well-known fact that the Prophet of Islam was the supremely most successful man in the entire human history. But he was not just a hero, as Thomas Carlyle has called him. According to the Quran, he was a good example for all mankind. He has shown us the way of achieving supreme success in this world. By studying the life of the Prophet (pbuh) we can derive at least 10 most important principles which were followed by the Prophet (pbuh). In short, the Prophet of Islam SAW was a positive thinker in the full sense of the word. All his activities were result-oriented. He completely refrained from all such steps as may prove counter-productive. First Principle: (To begin from the possible). This principle is well explained in a saying of Aishah RA. She said: “Whenever the Prophet SAW had to choose between two options, he always opted for the easier choice.” (Al-Bukhari). To choose the easiest option means to begin from the possible and one who begins from the possible will surely reach his or her goal. Second Principle: (To see advantage in disadvantage). In the early days of Makkah, there were many problems and difficulties. At that time, a guiding verse in Quran was revealed. It said: “With every hardship there is ease, with every hardship there is ease.” (94/5-6). This means that if there are some problems, there are also opportunities and ease at the same time. And the way to success is to work on the problems with sabr or patience, and take advantage of the opportunities. Third Principle: (To change the place of action). This principle is derived from the Hijrah. Hijrah was not just a migration from Makkah to Madinah. It was to find a more suitable place for Islamic work, as history proved later on. Sometimes we too have to find a more suitable place to live or work, one that is more conducive to following the orders of Allah SWT and the example of His last Messenger. Fourth Principle: (To make a friend out of an enemy). The Prophet SAW was repeatedly subjected to practices prosecution by the unbelievers. At that time and now also, the Quran enjoined upon him and us the return of good for evil. And then, as the Quran added, “You will see your worse enemy has become your closest friend” (41/34). It means that a good deed in return of a bad deed has a conquering effect over your enemies. Continued on Page 16, InShaa Allaah AL-HIKMAT By: Mohamed Sala’huddin Pazhoor - Founder & CTO of Divine Connect USA We continued walking toward the Kaaba accompanied by the Haram security, who was creating a ring around the Kaaba without disturbing the tawaaf which was still ongoing throughout the entire process. As I walked towards the majestic door of the Kaaba along with the AlShaibi family, I could see the Al-Hajar Al-Aswad (The Black Stone) with no one around it. It was a rare feeling to be in front of the black stone and have the ability to easily see it, in full view, with no distractions of pilgrims racing just to get a glimpse. Here I was with full access to Al Hajar Al Aswad and it was a breathtaking moment. I very respectfully stood in front of the black stone, removed my spectacles and with trembling hands put them inside my shirt pocket. Allahu Akbar! I took this great opportunity to kiss the holy Al-Hajar AlAswad. My face reached out to the stone as I kissed it praising our creator, Almighty Allah by reciting “Allahu Akbar”, Allah is the greatest. I took in my surroundings I gulped at the sheer magnitude of what I was about to experience. I walked with the greatest anticipation upon the steps leading to the entrance of the holy Kaaba. The members of the Al-Shaibi family led the way, as they were about to open the glorious door of the Kaaba. My legs were trembling as I placed my foot upon each of the steps until finally reaching the pinnacle. I mustered up the courage and placed my right foot into the holy Kaaba. I touched the beautiful golden doors of the Kaaba as I entered inside the most sacred spot in the world whilst my hands shook in amazement! I was flooded with emotions and the thought that this was the very same place that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had prayed in. My eyes were filled with tears and as I was overwhelmed with emotions. I began to take in all the features of inside the Kaaba and made a quick 360-degree look at the captivating interior that spiritually moved my soul. It was at that point that I realized I had to thank Almighty Allah. I composed and prepared myself to do two rakaat prayer. I raised my hands and said “Allahu Akbar” with tears flooding down my eyes reciting Surah Al Fatihah. I had never been as emotional as I was then reciting inside the holy Kaaba. It took me a while before I could finish Surah Al Fatihah and then Surah Al-Kafiroon. After the ruku when my forehead touched the holy floor during the sujood, I could feel something extraordinary. For sure this was an experience like never before, it was a moment of glory, happiness, emotions and thankfulness to our creator Almighty Allah. Taj Siddique / Florida USA Note: The following article is not my original writing. I adopted most of it from various sources on the internet. Some names are changed to preserve discretion. This is the story of two women who are thousands of miles apart from each other, in different countries, they are from different cultures and they follow different religions. However, they both are the victims of their orthodox cultural faiths, may be because of Bro. Taj Siddiqui their gender. Letter from Israel My name is Raia Tessler and I live in Tel Aviv. I am now 64 and I have been pleading justice to get a divorce from my husband for the past 28 years, but my husband will not give permission. Under the court’s interpretation of Jewish religious law, a husband’s consent is necessary to end a marriage. As has been the case for centuries, a Jewish divorce is not final in Israel until men deliver handwritten divorce decrees into the cupped hands of the women. Even if you’re not religious, you have to be divorced by Jewish religious law that governs family matters. An Israeli woman can’t split from her spouse without proving extraordinary abuse or neglect. A simple assertion of “We don’t get along” or “This marriage was a mistake” is not enough. All the husband has to do to preserve the status quo is avoid taking action, asking for delays, failing to show up in court, and otherwise stonewalling and dragging things out in an attempt to wear her down. He doesn’t want to grant her wish. My friend Tamar Denninberg lives in Jerusalem. She was a vibrant, and bright young woman when she got married and then had a beautiful daughter. After only four years of marriage she filed for divorce and has been fighting for it for her entire youth. Her daughter is now 36 and she is now a 61 years old women who has lost all her joys, dreams and hopes. She never dated another man, and never had an opportunity to build a relationship. she’s given up on starting a family. Under Israeli law, she remains trapped in a defunct marriage that her husband won’t allow to end. She can’t legally remarry, and was obligated even to repay some of his debts. “How come a woman’s freedom is at the mercy of her husband?” she asks. “That law was written, maybe 4,000 years ago, but it’s put the woman in a place that they became invisible and helpless and most of the time, AL-HIKMAT completely dependent on their husband’s will.” We are just two living examples of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Israeli women caught in legal and social limbo because of a law that leaves matter of divorce for all Jewish citizens in the hands of a government-funded religious court. In Israel, there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce; only rabbis can legalize a marriage or its dissolution, which is only possible with the husband’s full consent. If a woman has children with another man before divorce is granted, those children and their descendants will be deemed illegitimate and not allowed to marry in Israel under current law. A Jewish man also needs his wife’s permission to divorce, but without it he can live with another woman and have children recognized as Jewish in Israel, while she cannot. The court, consisting of a panel of rabbis, bases its decisions on the customs of Orthodox Judaism. The rulings apply to all Jewish Israelis, whether they are Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, observant or secular. Around 35% of Jewish marriages in Israel end in divorce. Letter from India My name is Shayara Bano, I am 35, I live in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and I have been married for 13 years. Last year I received an unusual letter from my husband, accusing me of stealing jewelry and money. The letter closed with a single sentence, repeated three times: “I divorce you. I divorce you. I divorce you.” He has not allowed me to even see my two children. I am among the countless Muslim women in India who have been abandoned by their husbands, often without any notice, through “triple talaq” permitted under Muslim family law, that allows a Muslim man to instantaneously divorce his wife. After the grieving was over, I stood up and said enough is enough, and filed a law suit against my husband in the Indian Supreme Court. My friend Ishrat INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM 15 Jahan was only 14 when she became a bride. They were married for 15 years and have four children. In 2015, she was unceremoniously divorced over the phone. Her husband called her from Dubai, repeated “I divorce you” three times, and hung up. Ishrat is not even allowed to see her children. Along with other women, she is now also approaching the Supreme Court. “I want my children, I want alimony, and I want my home that my parents paid for.” Quran’s teachings on triple talaq require months of reconciliation attempts before the marriage can be dissolved. But our religious leaders don’t adhere to that guidance. Many of India’s Muslim clerics insist that the Indian judiciary has no right to interpret their religious texts. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, a powerful organization that dictates family law, filed a 69-page affidavit in September countering Bano’s case. “Male is stronger and female weaker sex. Man is not dependent on woman for his protection. On the contrary, she needs him for her defence,” stated the affidavit, adding that triple talaq wards off the possibility of a rise in murders of women whose husbands want to divorce them. India is the home to the world’s third-largest Muslim population, with 90 million Muslim women. Roughly 10% are survivors of triple talaq, and the clear majority receive no compensation. In a 1985 landmark judgment, the Supreme Court granted divorcee, Shah Bano, alimony for life. But following protests from Muslim leaders and others that the court was being intrusive, the judgment was overturned. Concluding Note: For Divorce in Israel, please watch the movie GETT which is available on the internet. For Divorce in India, the Supreme Court has agreed to take the case. MAGAZINE APRIL / MAY / JUNE 2017 Continued from page 12 By Bro. Al Mustapha The Noble Last Prophet of Allaah And the life of the Prophet SAW is a historical proof of this principle. This is why at times like these we have to exercise great patience and tolerance despite all the painful and blasphemous and degrading things that are said against the noble Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and about Muslims. We have to react how he would have reacted and we must behave how he behaved, and we must forgive the way he forgave and we must live Islam the way he lived Islam and we must strive to share this message the way he shared this message with all mankind if we truly love him and more so if we truly love Allah God Almighty SWT. Fifth Principle: (To turn a minus into plus). After the Battle of Badr, about 70 of the unbelievers were taken as the prisoners of war. They were educated people. The Prophet (pbuh) announced that if any one of them would teach ten Muslim children how to read and write, he would be freed. This was the first school in the history of Islam in which all of the students were Muslims, and all of the teachers were from the enemy ranks. Here I shall quote a British orientalist who remarked about the Prophet of Islam (pbuh): “He faced adversity with the determination to wring success out of failure.” Sixth Principle: (The power of peace is stronger than the power of violence). When Makkah was conquered, all of the Prophet’s direst opponents were brought before him, these were people who tortured and punished and hurt him and his followers and their relatives in the worse manner for many years simply because they believed in one God. They were war criminals, in every sense of the word. But the Prophet SAW did not give the order to kill them. He simply said: “Go, you are free.” The result of this kind behavior was miraculous; that entire city immediately accepted Islam. This type of peaceful approach (and not violence or the sword) is what allowed Islam to spread to all corners of this world with Allah’s help. Seventh Principle: (Not to be a twoways only thinker - either this way or that way only). Al Mustapha In the famous Ghazwa of Muta, Khalid Bin Walid decided to withdraw Muslim forces from the battlefield because he discovered that they were disproportionately outnumbered by the enemy. When they reached Madinah, some of the Muslims received them by the word “O Furrar” (O deserters!) The Prophet SAW said: “No, they are Kurrar (men of advancement).” Those people were thinking ‘two ways only’, either fighting or retreating. The Prophet said no, there is also a third option, and that is to avoid war and find a time to strengthen yourselves. Now history tells us that the Muslims, after three years of preparation, advanced again towards the Roman border and this time they won a resounding victory. Eighth Principle: (To bring the battle in one’s own favorable field). This principle is derived from the Ghazwa of Hudaibiyya. At that time, the unbelievers were determined to engage Muslims in fighting, because they were in an advantageous position. But the Prophet (pbuh), by accepting their harsh conditions unilaterally, entered into a pact. It was a ten-year peace treaty. Until then, the meeting ground between Muslims and nonMuslims had been on the battlefield. Now the area of conflict became that of an ideological debate. Within two years, Islam emerged as victorious because of the simple reason of its ideological superiority. Ninth Principle: (Gradualism instead of radicalism). This principle is well-established by a Hadith of AlBukhari. Aishah RA says that the first verses and chapters of the Quran were related mostly to heaven and hell. And then after a long time when the people’s hearts had softened, the specific commands to desist from adultery and drinking etc. were revealed in the Quran. I still feel I have to do something more, especially in this time of turmoil about Islam & Muslims. Our religion is misunderstood by majority of Non –Muslims, and few extremist Muslims who have forgotten that our Prophet Mohammad (SAW) have lived among Christians and Jews when he migrated to the city of Madinah from Mecca. As Muslims we know that Islam teaches us that killing one person, is like killing all mankind / a nation. So, it is our duty to go out and spread the real teachings of Islam and change that fear into friendship through Da’wah. I have always read AL-HIKMAT INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM MAGAZINE and AL- HIKMAT MUSLIM COFFEE NEWS for years. This was the best opportunity for me to contact the office and express my interest in Da’wah. I called the office and my call did not go to answering machines (like some other places) but live person answered the phone on the first ring. She gave the detailed answer to my questions and explained the work they are doing in the path of Allaah. I expressed my interest to go visit them and collect materials for Da’wah purpose. She agreed. The day of the meeting, I met with Sis. Salma who greeted and received me at the door. I felt very happy and welcome. At the entrance there is a visitors log where I signed in (very organized), I thought. Then she introduced me to Shaikh Shafayat, who was on the phone but turned around and acknowledged my presence and gave sincere reply to my Salam. Then Sis. Salma gave me a tour of the Da’wah Center. It is a nice building with 3 offices, a Da’wah hall and another area for classes and recreation. There is also a room for all the publications and Da’wah materials books and brochures. As Shaikh was going to perform Zuhr Salah in Darul Uloom, next door to the Da’wah center building, he inquired about my journey of 31/2 hours and my safety. That showed his sincerity and passion. What he preaches he practices too. Sis.Salma took me to the publications room and gave me copies of the Qur’aan, , Magazines and informative brochures and carried 2 boxes in the trunk of my Car. I was also introduced to another staff member, Sis. Faria, who gave me direction to a Halal restaurant, without getting lost. All this happened within one hour. The best hour of my life! I was impressed by their heart felt warmth, sincerity and dedication to their work. Al-Hikmat need our support and donation to continue their work. May Allah SWT reward them abundantly. Hamzad Mohammed T.T.U.T.A.’s Teacher of the Year 2013, Trinidad, WI On earth he was a bulb, Giving joy to one’s qalb, Awesome was the Hazrat, Br. Hamzad Who’ll lie on jannat’s mat. The above verses speak glowingly of the first caliph (leader) of Islam, Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.).They tell of a man who blazed a trail of glory in playing a pivotal role in sanitizing the minds of people in his time by introducing to them snippets of Islam which had a cumulative effect of bringing about in not all but, many others a spiritual revival. What a commitment to the deen (religion) of Islam by Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.). Cannot ask for a better soldier in Islam after Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) than the first caliph. A multi-dimensional man, Hazrat Aby Bakr (R.A.) acted on the world’s stage with great vigour and zeal, performing his roles as father, missionary, leader and judge par excellence. He possessed the attributes needed to execute those parts, hence being given titles along the way viz. Ittiqaa ( Pious ), Abdul Fadhl ( Father of Generosity), Siddiq Akbar ( The Most Truthful ) and Ameenun- Naas ( The Most Trustworthy person amongst the people). One of the legacies that the first caliph bequeathed to us was a collection of beautiful quotations which if read and digested can surely impact positively on us all. A few examples of those illustrious sayings are: •It’s hard to be patient in adversity, but it’s harder to lose its reward.” •“Rue that day when good wasn’t done.” •“We crave for a world that craves for our exit.” •“Be kind to our charges.” •“The tongue of man is the root cause of adversity.” •“It’s better to be alone than in bad company.” •“The company of pious men is better than being in solitude.” •“Improve our own conduct before improving others.” •“Run away from greatness and it will follow you.” •“None should look down upon another Muslim.” •“If you consult somebody, speak the truth to be rightly advised.” •“Boasting of one’s possessions displeases Allah” and •“Co-operate with one another, and have no grudge nor jealously.” Many accolades were given to Hazrat Abu Bakr ( R.A.), one of which by Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was :”Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.) is the best of human beings save the prophets. He will be my companion on the cistern of Kawthar. Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.) is for paradise.” Brothers and sisters do not hesitate in adopting Hazrat Abu Bakr’s (R.A.) lifestyle which he displayed so admirably that caused many a cup to runneth over with joy and excitement. Jump on his bandwagon. Gains to accrue. Allah to be on one’s side. AL-HIKMAT INTERNATIONAL MEDIA DEVICES Parents take heed! Children using devices such as smartphones and tablets at bedtime have more than twice the risk of a disrupted night’s sleep compared to children without access to these devices, according to a new 2016 study led by researcher Ben Carter, PhD, Msc from King’s College London. Previous research suggests that 72 per cent of children and 89 per cent of adolescents have at least one device in their bedrooms and most are used near bedtime. This new research, published in JAMA Pediatrics, is a review of 20 existing studies from four continents, involving more than 125,000 children aged 6-19 (with an average age of 15). The use of media devices within 90 minutes of going to sleep was associated with an increased likelihood of inadequate sleep quantity, poor sleep quality, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The presence of a smartphone or tablet in the bedroom, even without use, was associated with an increased likelihood of poor sleep. Because of the nature of social media and instant messaging, children are continuously focused on devices in their environment, even when they are not actively using them. It is thought that screen-based media devices negatively affect sleep by delaying or interrupting sleep time, by psychologically stimulating the brain, and by affecting sleep cycles and sleep quality. Sleep disturbance in childhood is known to have adverse effects on health, including poor diet, obesity, sedentary behavior, lower immunity, stunted growth, and mental health issues. Please monitor your children’s exposure to such media devices to prevent these potentially harmful effects. ASK A’ISHAH Submitted by an Anonymous Sister Dear A’ishah: My friend and I have been friends for over 10 years. We get along well and enjoy each other’s company. Recently we have been arguing a lot about minor things that somehow turn into big issues. It is very stressful and it has taken a toll on our relationship. A’ishah, would you like to weigh in? Sincerely, Quick to Argue Dear Quick to Argue: Disagreements are a natural part of friendship and relationship. No two people can see the world exactly the same 100% of the time. We need to take time to think about the cause of the argument, what biases we bring and what needs each person has to be filled. Try to stay calm and respectful of each other and communicate in a loving manner to resolve the issue. The Prophet (SAW) said, “The most hated person in the sight of Allah is the most quarrelsome person of the opponents.” Get acquainted with “Ask A’ishah”, the provocative column that answers inquiries from readers who seek her advice and narrations based upon the authentic Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It’s scholarly, inquisitive and contains witty, sage advice to husbands, wives, teenagers, families and everyone else in between. “Ask A’ishah” is featured exclusively in Al Hikmat Magazine. Farooq Shafi Bro. Azad Ali Written by: Bro. Azad Ali Chairman of Darul Uloom Institute, Florida As I walked upon the hallowed ground I heard a whisper unlike any sound, The voice beckoning me to enter beneath to see Where thy loved -one doth dwell in peace and harmony. Entering beneath a messenger appear “Please follow me for there is none to fear, The Almighty has arranged your blessed tour Where non alive were invited before “............ Behold! Colorful lights not seen by man Radiate in heavenly brilliance beneath this land, The rhythm of colors so intense and warm Infiltrates my soul with peace and calm........ A voice then whispered “we can go no more For beyond these lights lay a Golden door, Only a chosen few may enter at His call As the Almighty’s throne is beyond that wall....... It is there thy son doth dwell in loving peace Among the angels with wings of Golden Fleece, That day will come when you both shall meet Grieve not, do good and you too shall earn thy seat...... He looked around the room and saw the prayer mat in the corner. The mat was spread on a small rock. He ordered the rug and the rock removed. In his extreme shock and anger, he discovered a tunnel dug deep underneath leading to the prophet’s grave. He immediately ordered them arrested and started questioning them. Their disclosure came to everyone as a complete shock. The two men revealed that they were Christian spies and were dispatched and funded for a special mission by the Christian kings to enter the prophet’s grave and take his body away. The Sultan ordered them beheaded right away. In some commentaries, it is said that the Sultan went in the tunnel alone and came across the body of the holy prophet (SAW). He could see his foot which he kissed, covered and then he came out and ordered the tunnel closed immediately. It is also said that these two men were ready to take the body that night. Once the tunnel was closed, the Sultan ordered a deep channel dug around the prophet’s grave and ordered it filled with molten lead and copper to protect his (SAW) grave from any future mischievous attempts by anyone forever. Thomas Graf REMEMBER WE CAME FROM DUST AND UNTO DUST WE SHALL RETURN Are not all of our cities, certainly all of our churches, and no doubt each and every one of us, called to be people of compassion? However, we must be open to encounter “the other” and be willing to learn from them. I am reminded of my Old Testament Professor (Sr. Dianne Bergant) who once preached on this Gospel and said, “The reign of God went in search of the outsider. It is so typical of God to be untypical. Crossing boundaries before us, the power of God moves us out of ourselves and our narrow worlds. The outsider, in the hands of Jesus becomes our teacher. May we always be open to learn and share SHALOM…PEACE…SALAAM. As many Christians enter the most Sacred time of their Church Year (LENT), and as many received ashes on their foreheads and the following words were proclaimed, “REMEMBER THOU ART DUST, AND UNTO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN,”…perhaps this can be a reminder to all of us, no matter what race, faith, background…we have all come from our ONE GOD, and will all return to that ONE GOD. What perhaps is most important, is what we do during the “in-between” time. Continued from page 8 By Sis. Sylmerie Mustapha PRAYER & CHARITY Where is hunger the worst? Asia: 525.6 million Sub-Saharan Africa: 214 million Latin America and the Caribbean: 37 million How can we ever face Allah (SWT) and when questioned whether we helped any of the 795 million hungry people, many may or may not have the answer that is pleasing to Allah (SWT). Some will be tongue tied and searching for an adequate answer. We are all accountable to help out our needy brothers, sisters and families in humanity. We can help in so many ways, primarily by making dua constantly for those who need help, volunteering with humanitarian organization whose goals are to prevent and alleviate human suffering and poverty, volunteer at the soup kitchen, sponsor a meal at the centers that are set up to house and feed the needy and less fortunate, and your financial donations whatever it is makes a big difference to those in need. Sometimes, we feel, we don’t have enough to give, if 10,000 people give $1.00, that is $10,000. Do not dismiss the reward of giving, regardless of the amount. We cannot only live in our little cocoon and provide for our family and friends, there is a bigger purpose why Allah (SWT) blessed us with more. It is part of our test and and we all want to pass whatever test comes our way. May Allah (SWT) continue to bless us and guide us to give more to assist our brothers and sisters who badly need our kind support. May Allah (SWT) alleviate the suffering of all our brothers, sisters and children all over the world. Aameen. “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It was a feeling of being blessed, being fortunate enough to pray inside the holy Kaaba and being able to make dua in the holiest, sacred sites in the world. I completed my two rakaat prayer with the highest spiritual connection I had ever experienced in my life, Alhamdulilah. After this I started making dua thinking of my deceased parents, sister, brother and all my relatives who had passed away. I asked Almighty Allah for their forgiveness and pleaded to give them Jannatul Firdous. This was the best place for me to make dua right inside the holy Kaaba where the spiritual connection was at its highest and I felt nearer to Almighty Allah more than ever before. I remembered many of my family members, friends and associates who have passed away and also asked Almighty Allah for the forgiveness of the deceased from the Muslim ummah. I prayed for our beloved Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), his companions, their family members and thanked Allah for showing mankind the way of life as taught and led by our beloved Prophet. I prayed for the custodians of the two holy mosques King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and for all the Imams of the holy mosques including Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rahman Al Sudais, Chairman & President of the General Presidency of Haramain and Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Al Khuzaim, Vice President of the General Presidency of Haramain and all the employees of the two holy mosques. I prayed to Allah to help alleviate the misery of Muslims worldwide especially the Muslims undergoing great difficulty in the lands of Syria, Iraq, Burma, Palestine and other places. I prayed for the refugees and asked Allah to give them a solution and guide them to lead a normal life. I prayed for world peace and peaceful coexistence among the people of different faiths. I also prayed for my twin brother Mohamed Muyeenuddin who has been all along my support in my life both at work and family. I prayed for my dear wife and all that she has done and sacrificed for me all along in our married life. I prayed for my brothers and their wives, my nieces, nephews and all my relatives and also I prayed for my friends, my colleagues at work and for my business “Divine Connect” and its employees. I also prayed for my brothers and sisters at our West Palm Beach Mosque, Al Amin Center Mosque and Darul Uloom in Florida. It took me over 15 minutes for me to complete my duas and Alhamdulilah, I did not forget anyone at that moment as I remembered all the important people in my life and the ummah and I made dua for everyone in general, Alhamdulilah. I got up from my dua and then prayed another two rakaat prayer facing the south, two rakaat facing the east, two rakaat facing the west. In total, I prayed four prayers of two rakaat each in all the four directions Alhamdulilah. I realized that inside the Kaaba is the only place in the entire planet where you can literally stand in one spot and pray in any direction. Answer: Al-Hamdulillaah some of the benefits of hajj are as follows: One who performed Hajj would have obeyed the command of the Qur’aan in Ch:3 V: 97 and fulfilled the fifth pillar of Islam. One who goes to hajj is regarded to have thanked Allaah for the bounties like health and wealth that Allaah has bestowed upon him or her. Hajj removes the sins of a person. Hajj helps people to understand that Islam is a religion of unity and solidarity. Hajj helps to get rid of psychological problems. Hajj dress code helps to prevent discrimination of color, race and nationality. The IMAAN of people who go to hajj becomes stronger. They learn to realize that all human beings are equal; hence, peace and love are attained. Renuka MEDITATION / IBAADAH IN ITIKAF The Qu’raan was revealed in the night of power, during the time when Prophet Mohammed (SAW) was performing Itikaf! Prophet Mohammed (SAW) made it a priority to perform Itikaf every Ramadan. And please be aware brothers and sisters, Itikaf can be conducted by both men and women. In Surah Maryam (Chapter 19), Maryam (RI) was the first woman granted this privilege. As noted in Surah Maryam, during her time in Itikaf, performed for the remembrance and pleasure of Allaah (SWT), food would automatically appear for her nourishment. Angel Jibreel also appeared before her and was commanded by Allaah (SWT) to tell her that she will be the mother of baby boy. Furthermore, when Maryam (RI) had the miracle baby and was being questioned and attacked by people, Allaah (SWT) instructed her not to talk. And what happened? She pointed to the baby and the baby said – “Abdullaah”: I am the servant of Allaah. It dispelled all other conversations. As Muslims, we are all encouraged to practice Itikaf. It is part of our Ibaadah. It’s such a humbling and profusely pious act: one that renews our faith, and increases our spiritual awareness and oneness with Allaah (SWT). It is certainly an act that can result in miracles! Continued from page 17 By Bro. Al Mustapha The Noble Last Prophet of Allaah This is a clear proof that for social changes, Islam advocates the evolutionary or gradual method, rather than the revolutionary or radical method. Tenth Principle: (To be pragmatic in controversial matters). During the writing of Hudaibiyya treaty, the Prophet (pbuh) dictated these words: “This (agreement) is by Muhammad, the Messenger of God.” The Quraishi delegate raised objections over these words. The Prophet SAW promptly changed the words (which were of critical importance to his mission as the Messenger of God) and ordered to write simply, Muhammad son of Abdullah. He did this with hikmat and wisdom for the greater good of the agreement and to avoid conflict knowing that victory was AL-HIKMAT RAJAB / SHA’BAN / RAMADHAAN 1438 A.H ahead. These were the principles through which the Prophet of Islam SAW gained that success which has been recognized by historians as the supreme success of the greatest man to grace the face of this earth, SAW. My friends, when we start living Islam by following the dynamic yet humble character of the last Prophet SAW, and start living those values and good manners that he taught us, then the non-Muslims will be drawn to us by our upright conduct and they will ask questions about Islam. When we explain this was the character of the noble Prophet and the teachings of Islam, they will want to know more about Islam. It starts with you and me living Islam by obeying the commands of God Almighty and by following the teachings of all His Prophets and in particular His last Prophet Muhammad PBUH the greatest man to ever grace this earth. May Allah God Almighty guide us and give us the determination to follow the leadership, teachings and the character of the noble Prophet Muhammad PBUH and to implement good manners into our lives and the lives of our children and to share with all mankind. Ameen. Continued from page 26 From America to Inside The Kaaba By: Mohamed Sala’huddin Pazhoor After this I saw a table in the middle of the Kaaba and placed upon this beautiful table was rose water, very exclusive and beautifully presented Attar perfumes and pieces of cloth. I was presented with the glorious opportunity of an Attar (perfume) dipped cloth to wash the inside walls of the holy Kaaba. I took the cloth and started wiping the walls of the Kaaba with utmost respect and humility. I would not have ever wiped any surface on this earth like this before. I remembered the days when I used to clean our small home in our village where I was born. However, this was different. I became overwhelmed and emotional. I made sure that every stroke that went from left to right and right to left be perfect and I could see the shining marble gleaming with more brightness. I went to the table again and took another four pieces of cloth and started wiping different sections of the Kaaba with utmost care. I was told that I could keep this Attar filled cloths as a souvenir of my visit. INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM 30 Alhamdulilah. The Kaaba measures approximately 50 feet (15.2 meters) high, 35 feet (10.7 meters) wide and 40 feet (12.2 meters) long. Inside, the floor is made of marble and limestone and has three pillars which glistens and gleams in all its splendor. A small altar or table is set between the columns and lamp like objects hang from the ceiling. The wall directly adjacent to the entrance of the Kaaba has six tablets inlaid with Arabic inscriptions, and there are several more tablets along the other walls. Along the upper half of the walls runs a green cloth embroidered with gold Qur’anic verses which was absolutely breathtaking and a sight that is etched in my mind. The ceiling is of a darker color, similar in hue to the lower trimming. A golden door, the Babut Taubah (Door of Repentance) on the right wall (right of the entrance) opens to an enclosed staircase that leads to a hatch, which itself opens to the roof. I spent the most electrifying 25 minutes of my entire life inside the holy Kaaba. I took one last final look around and then I exited the door of the Kaaba with great humility and made a small prayer that Almighty Allah bless and protect our Muslim Ummah.
