He invented the Dewey Classification System for books in 1876. How it all works The Dewey Decimal Classification system is the way the libraries organize nonfiction books in a uniform way. The Dewey system assigns a number to a given book based on its subject matter. This system is broken down into ten main classes. The classes are defined by discipline.
