Emerging Voices edited by Martin Ashley & Andy Brooke The Emerging Voices series presents a selection of engaging short pieces tailored specifically to the needs of changing or ‘cambiata’ male voices. The songs have been commissioned from experienced composers in the field, with the aim of developing voices safely while also immersing singers in a range of styles and texts. Progressive in difficulty, from simple two-part songs to four-part arrangements, this series will inspire young performers at a pivotal juncture in their journey into the world of singing. Series Editors Professor Martin Ashley has published four books and numerous academic papers based on the physiology and sociology of adolescent singers, and devised the ‘Boys Keep Singing’ project in collaboration with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. Andy Brooke is a composer and arranger specializing in choral music, and has taught music in Titles publishing May-July 2016 Titles in the series: Andy Brooke: Molly Malone CBar and piano Andy Brooke: Angels watchin’ over me CCBar(Bar) and piano Andy Brooke: Haul away, Joe! Difficulty: 1 | CBar and piano 9780193417649 Russell Pascoe: My love is like a red, red rose: This imaginative setting of Burns to an original tune by Pascoe is a masterful display of vocal textures and writing for male voices. It was a run-away success at the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival. Difficulty: 2 | CCBar(Bar) and piano 9780193417656 Sarah Quartel: The Beat of a Different Drum: This original composition for cambiata and baritone voices sets the composer’s own text celebrating freedom of expression and the music within each of us. Accompanied by hand-drum and piano, the piece is an exciting and engaging sing filled with teachable moments and opportunities for musical growth, with simple legato and two-part passages, and vocal percussion. The harmonic language is folkinspired but with exciting chromatic shifts that are part of the composer’s accomplished style. Diff: 2 | CCBar and piano 9780193417663 Oliver Tarney: Sea Fever: This is an imaginative and modern-sounding setting of John Masefield’s popular poem (2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Masefield's death). This expressive piece ebbs and flows and provides imitative textures and well-crafted narrative. Diff: 2.5 | CCBar and piano 9780193417724 Andy Brooke, arr.: Haul away, Joe!: This fine arrangement of the popular sea-shanty provides enjoyment and learning opportunities through call-and-response, opportunities for solos, amusing (and historical) lyrics, and an appealing, catchy chorus. A footnote makes further suggestions for choreography and how to inject the drama of the open seas. Diff: 2 | CCBar and piano 9780193417694 Alan Bullard: Health and Safety: This original suite, written for the Warwickshire Youth Choir, represents an extended concert item at the centre of the Emerging Voices series. It sets anonymous instructions found in packaging to general household goods, providing amusing and theatrical highlights as well as musical interplay and formal episodes. Diff: 3 | CCBar and piano 9780193417700 Alan Bullard: Not too fast, not too slow: This original composition combines several traditional proverbs, a laid-back swing feel, a whispering section, and an immediate melodic ‘hook’. Sufficient unison writing supports effective learning for this age group, and challenging duplet rhythms are made accessible within helpful longer phrases. The music displays Bullard’s accessible but highly accomplished compositional technique. Diff: 3 | CBar and piano 9780193417717 Andy Brooke, arr: ‘Piano Man’ by Billy Joel: This arrangement meets the demand for timeless popular songs. Brooke’s arrangement contains that memorable tune, Joel’s clever lyrics, riffs associated with the original, and an exciting piano part that supports the singers and provides short interludes.
