These pre-writing skills are essential to develop the ability to hold and move a pencil fluently and to produce legible writing and to write without tiring their hand muscles later on in their learning. In Nursery, we play lots of games to develop hand and finger strength, pencil grasp and hand-eye co-ordination. A really important part of pre-writing is the ability to draw some shapes and to build these skills before then working on letter shapes. Circles, crosses, lines and zig zags all help children to develop the control that they will need to become fantastic writers. I’ve attached a sheet with some fun ideas to develop these skills that you can try at home. Notices This Week We have been learning about shapes and learning the names of lots of 2D shapes such as trapezium, pentagon and hexagon. The children have been counting the number of sides and angles to help us find out more about the properties of shapes. We have recorded the shapes we know in our busy books. The children have also been very busy creating some very special winter themed pictures in our creative area. World Nursery Rhyme Week The children have all loved learning a new Nursery Rhyme every day as part of World Nursery Rhyme Week. We have been tapping out rhythms with the claves and making up funny little versions of the rhymes. The children have all shown great confidence in singing their favourites at group time. Next Week Our Learning Focus will be building up our writing and pre-writing skills. We will be introducing ‘dough gym’ to the children where we move to the music whilst rolling, pinching and patting the playdough. Toys from Home We have noticed that lots of children have been bringing in little toys from home. This can cause some issues relating to sharing, and also these toys could be lost or broken so we ask that these be kept at home – thank you for your support in this. Hats, gloves and scarves We do play outside in all but the most extreme weather so it is important that your child has a warm coat and a hat for these cold days. Writing your child’s name in all items of clothing, including hats and scarfs, really helps us to match them to their owner. As always...
