John replied, “God in heaven appoints each person’s work. You yourselves know how plainly I told you
that I am not the Messiah. I am here to prepare the way for him - that is all. The bride will go where the
bridegroom is. A bridegroom’s friend rejoices with him. I am the bridegroom’s friend, and I am filled with
joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

For chapel, we performed a skit about letting our light
shine for Jesus no matter what the circumstance. We
want to especially thank Emberly for playing the part of
Satan in our skit.
February 2013
Kindergarten is “Snow”
much fun! We enjoyed
making snowmen out of
shaving cream and glue.
We learned the three
R’s: “Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle”. Hannah and
Mariah reused items to
create something new.
How Can We Help the Earth?
We can help by taking good care of animals. We can recycle cans.
Clean up after yourself. Do not litter. Recycle paper.
Pick up the trash.
~Mariah
~Hannah
~Allie
The girls played “Hundred Board
Bingo”. This helped them learn to
quickly find 2-digit numbers on a
hundreds chart. The first person
to put three tiles of their color in
a row was the winner!
By matching pictures of animals, we
learned that many baby animals look
like their mother. We also
completed a Venn diagram to share
with each other how we are like our
mothers, and how we are different.
Allie and Mariah practiced writing
the letter “k” using the correct
form. They can also spell words
that start with many letters of the
alphabet!

At the recycling center, Mr. Jones
taught us how they sort items people
bring in to be recycled. The Wellington
Recycling Center is open every
Wednesday afternoon from 1:00-4:00
and every Saturday morning from 9:0012:00.
In Science, we learned about animals
that live on each of the continents. We
learned penguins live in Antarctica, the
Emperor Penguin being the biggest.
Kangaroos and koalas live in Australia,
and pandas live in Asia. Lions can be
found in Africa. On Kansas day, we
learned buffalos live in North America.
In South America, you can find parrots
in the rainforest. Europe has many of
the same animals we have in North
America, as well as wild boars.

We had fun playing with Caleb’s puppies he
brought for show-and-tell. Thank you,
Mrs. Smith, Austin, and Caleb, for bringing
the puppies.
Jonas is showing us how
the simple machine he
built works.
We enjoyed learning about friction. Here
Aubree and Keaton are testing it out.
Aubree did a nice
job using her
Abraham Lincoln
stick puppet to tell
about his life.
Caleb and Jonas are showing their Civil
War puppets they made of important
people we learned about during our Civil
War unit.

Our government is divided into three branches.
The three branches are the legislative,
executive, and the judicial. The legislative
branch makes our laws. The executive branch
is headed by the president and carries out our
laws. The judicial branch is made up of the
Supreme Court and other federal or national
courts that make decisions that involve
questions that concern our constitution. These
branches of our government were part of the
plan when our Constitution was written over
200 years ago.
Kansas Day
January 29th was Kansas Day. The 3rd and
4th graders went around the school asking the
other students trivia questions about Kansas. If
they got the answers right they would get a
Twinkie or a chocolate cupcake that were
shaped into a sunflower. The 3rd and 4th
graders got treats after they were done asking
questions to the other students.

Chili Feed Prayers
We wrote prayers for the chili feed. We hung
them up in the lunchroom for everybody to
read while they were standing in line waiting
for their chili and dessert. We also drew a
picture to go with our prayer.

Lunch Bunch
Mrs. Skupa gave us a
book to read called
Turtle in Paradise by
Jennifer Holm. She
gave us one month to
read it. Then we got
together, ate lunch, and
talked about the book.
Mrs. Skupa gave us
cake and ice cream for
dessert. I love Lunch
Bunch! It’s fun to read
and discuss books.

Chapel
The third and fourth grade presented chapel on Friday. It was about the
Israelites wandering in the desert for 40 years. Moses was the leader and then
Joshua became their leader.
By: Alysa
Joshua and
Macy were the
storytellers.
This is a picture of the 3rd and 4th graders
asking questions to the 2nd graders.

In 3rd grade we have been studying
measurement. We are measuring
the wall across from our classroom.
It is 9 meters and 14 centimeters

We learned about sugar molecules in food called
starches. We checked certain foods like bananas,
potatoes, cheese and cheetos. First we mashed the
food into a paste. Then we dissolved the food paste
in water. After stirring, we put a few drops of iodine
in it. If there is starch in the food, the water will turn
blue. Isaiah
Last month we played a math game called
“percent basketball.” It was to help us learn
about percents. You have 5 shots per round, and
you have to predict whether your percent for that
round will raise or lower your overall
percentage.
Braden
We made models of molecules called
“monomers.” We used clay to represent
the atoms. We used only carbon,
hydrogen, and oxygen. We put them
together randomly, but when we looked up
what we made, it turned out they all
already existed! Seth
In science we learned about when
atoms bond together to make other
substances. These are called ‘bonds.’
Ionic bonds are bonds that dissolve in
water and carry an electric current
through water. We set up a great
experiment to see if electricity would
flow through different solutions.
Jacob
To help learn about chemical changes,
we heated up a powder until it became
liquid. Then Mr. Tedder placed a piece
of candy cane in the liquid. It screeched
loudly and gave off a bright light. It
showed that when chemicals change
phase their properties change too.
Emberly
To see a chemical change, we burned
Magnesium (metal), which added oxygen
(gas) to it, and ended up with a white
powder called MgO. That is a chemical
change because we ended up with a
completely different substance.
Isabella
In science we learned about the early ideas
of how the universe is put together. We
drew models of what 4 different people
through history thought the universe looks
like. It turns out Copernicus and Galileo
had very good ideas and thought the
universe looks the way we know today.
Draecon
We did an experiment to show that heat
causes things to expand and cold causes
them to contract. We used a ball and ring
setup to test this. When both are cool,
the ball passes through the ring. Then we
heated the ball and put the ring in ice
water. After that, the ball would no
longer pass through the ring. This
happens because heat causes the
molecules to change. Chloé
7
We observed water changing from one phase to
another and then back again. We set up a lot of
lab equipment and heated water. As it got hot, it
changed from liquid to steam and rose up the
tube. As it got further up the tube, it it cooled
down and condensed back to water and dripped
out the other end of the tube. Avery

Language Arts: We’ve been reviewing author’s purpose in Language Arts. Here’s an example: the
comic book Spider Man is meant to entertain the reader. Why? Because it’s a comic book, which is
a kind of story.
Karsten
We’ve also been learning about personal narratives from a reader’s point of view. We read personal
narratives that Katie, Olivia, and Bliss wrote. They are all great moments in their lives that they
looked back on and wrote in a story. The narratives were kind of short, but they were all very well
thought out. I liked them all!
Draecon
As we’ve been getting ready to write personal narratives, we read a ton of published narratives written by other kids. Our two high schoolers had their stories published when they were younger, and
we listened to them read their stories to the class.
Isaiah
When Katie and Olivia came in to share their personal narratives, they gave us good advice to follow
when we write our own stories.
Seth
Reading: We read two essays in reading. The
first, “Shooting an Elephant,” was about how the
author, George Orwell, had to shoot an elephant in
order to be accepted. The other essay, “The Night
the Bed Fell,” was a personal narrative written by a
guy named James Thurber. Mr. Thurber’s bed tips
over, and everyone freaks out.
Jacob
Reading: We read a story called “The
Samurai’s Daughter.” We made a
conflict kite to show the conflicts
between the characters, society,
nature, and even the main character’s
conflicts inside herself. We drew a
picture on the back of the kite to show
what each conflict looked like.
Chloé
Reading: We read “Leghorn” by Watt Key
out of Scope Magazine. When Mr. Key was
young, his family got a rooster named
Leghorn, and it really scared him. It was a
funny story.
After we read it, we had to find different
literary elements in the story, and then we
made connections between the story and our
own experiences.
Emberly
MS Chapel: This month we did a skit called “Bad Hair Day.” This skit showed how we don’t have to follow everything
someone else does. Here’s one of the crazy things that happened in this skit: one person put on a moustache, so everyone
else put on a moustache. One of my favorite parts is when I messed up my hair, so everyone else did, too. We don’t
always have to do things that other people do because it could end up getting us in trouble. It was a really funny skit, but it
also taught us something.
Avery
Our chapel skit, “Bad Hair Day,” showed that God made each person different. You don’t have to copy others, even if
what they are doing seems cool. We also sang the song “I am Somebody.”
Isabella
During chapel, our skit showed that we shouldn’t follow what every other person does. We all have unique characteristics
and should express them.
