The Advantages of the CD-based Material

Appendix 1
The Advantages of the CD-based Material
1. User Friendly
a. Any place, any time convenience
i. As compared to printed material, CDs are easy to carry and store.
b. Choice to print the content pages as needed
i. You have the option to study from the CD or printed material. Hence, it
caters to all ages and learning styles. You also have a choice of printing
the entire course material, one unit, one section or one page as and when
needed.
Example:
2. Assists Understanding and Retention
a. Easy, user-friendly navigation
i. Unlike printed material, it is easier for you to jump from one section in
one unit to another section in another unit in the CD-based courses. For
example, from Section 1.1 to Section 1.3 or from Unit 1 to Unit 3
Example:
b. More interesting than printed material
i. In CD-based courses, the content being presented is to the point, with
important points being listed on screen, giving access to extra
information separately.
ii. Additionally, the content presented in the CDs is colorful and well laidout and hence, more attractive.
Example:
c. Increased interaction with the content
i. Instead of reading lengthy paragraphs, you are presented with small
chunks of content, ensuring student interaction, alertness and thus,
increased understanding and retention.
Example: Content on Computer capabilities – The section on “Speed” is covered in 2 pages in the PDF, whereas
the entire content for Speed, Accuracy, Reliability and Storage Capacity is presented in a single scrollable screen.

3. Internet Connectivity
Additionally, if you are already connected by the internet, you would be able to access
WawasanLearn, the Wawasan Homepage, the OAS page as well as any third-party links
suggested in the course material by clicking the relevant button or linked text. This 3-in-1
package would ensure that the students are actively connected with Wawasan Open University as
well as the World Wide Web.
Thus, packed with all these advantages, Wawasan Open University is confident that the CDbased courses will help you to understand the set objectives easily. In preparing the multimedia
based CD we were able to structure and create discrete learning objects*, to support your
learning. We have made the important concepts more easily understood by you.
*A learning object is a resource, usually digital and web-based, that can be used and re-used to support learning.
Learning objects offer a new conceptualization of the learning process: rather than the traditional "several hour
chunk", they provide smaller, self-contained, re-usable units of learning.[1]
They will typically have a number of different components, which range from descriptive data to information about
rights and educational level. At their core, however, will be instructional content, practice, and assessment. A key
issue is the use of metadata. (Source: Wikipedia)
