The Committee then suggested that I assume the role of President, a position I feel privileged to hold, yet humbled to have been asked. Given that my tenure as President has been short, I don’t propose to bring a long report. The season’s performances are set out herein under each team with Captains / Managers commenting on their seasons; but words like “disappointing”, “lack of maturity”, “frustrating”, “struggling”... are indicative of their comments & hence our season. There is vast potential in our young players that cannot be denied and something you will pick up on as you read & digest some of the individual performances described in this report, but that potential needs to be harnessed properly. The cricket teams need, wherever possible, to have a balance of youth & experience & a strong work ethic should be paramount. Younger players should expect to do an “apprenticeship” through the grades & earn promotion – not on just one good performance, but on consistent application & performances. Mental toughness needs to be developed along with respect for teammates, Coaches & Administrators alike. More mature players should be prepared to take on a mentor role within their teams. Look, to be honest with you this year has not been one of our best years as a Club on the playing field. We have been in unfamiliar territory not experienced for quite some years, but positives have still emerged: Chris Withers’ 5th Grade side finished third in their Competition & were Semi-finalists, as were Barry Coad’s Colts; whilst our Women’s Brewer Shield Limited-Overs side were Runners-up. The Women’s Team also won the SCAWC Spirit of Cricket Award for the second year running & we commend you for being great ambassadors for our Club. In the off-season your Committee has been active in endeavouring to make positive things happen. From a cricket perspective the return of Steve Small to our Club as Performance Director I believe will turn out to be most significant; his input & enthusiasm & toughness will be invaluable to us as a Club. Focusing heavily on the mental approach to batting, Garry Sheen will head up offseason batting squads; Warren Buttigieg will again oversee our bowlers; & Michael Wholohan will join them, as all three continue their vital roles as Club Coaches. Bolstering those stocks will be Jarrod Lee, Kevin Geyer & Ryan Smith with emphasis on fielding, fitness & input into our PG & AW Green Shield sides. We are also very keen to implement a five-year plan for Women’s Cricket to ensure an on-going presence of Women’s Cricket into the future as we move forward. Around the grounds things are happening as well: centre wicket & practice wickets at Howell have been scarified, top-dressed & laser levelled; concreting to the rear & side of the curator’s shed to allow wicket soil to be stored have been completed; a new BBQ slab to facilitate the return of the fixed BBQ for after-game get-togethers; along with pathways from both change rooms to ground entrances. 4 Rance Oval wicket square received a top dress & fence upgrade is under way, together with the installation of shade shelters. Bill Ball Oval (Cook Park) will also receive an awning to the western side of existing seating, together with concreting in front & side of pavilion where appropriate. Our Club wishes to acknowledge our Major Sponsors: Penrith City council, Panthers World of Entertainment and Penrith Bowling & Recreation Club, without whom we would struggle to be competitive in the modern era of the game. Ross Graham 5 CRICKET MANAGER’S REPORT by Mathew Thompson It has been a privilege to assume the role of Cricket Manager and help to drive a period of exciting change as we seek to build towards vastly improved results in the coming seasons. I’d like to firstly acknowledge the work of my predecessor, Chris Silk, who due to personal reasons was forced to step aside from this demanding role earlier in the season. Chris’ tireless work across a number of positions over many years is much admired. He deserves to enjoy every minute of his son Jordan’s pursuit of a baggy green cap! Chris is welcome back at our Club at any time. Upon becoming Cricket Manager, I made it clear to my Committee colleagues that I believed it was time for change. With the Club firmly entrenched in its magnificent modern facility, we needed to shift our focus firmly back on cricket. I am thrilled to report that the Committee is absolutely committed to supporting our endeavours to boost our cricketing fortunes. The last six months have been highly productive as a result. We head into the forthcoming summer with the best Coaching Team and development structure in Sydney Grade Cricket. The return of Penrith Cricket Club legend Steve Small in the position of Performance Director is one of the most significant appointments in our history. Steve’s reputation as a first-class player and coach is well known and is an agent for positive change. Steve will spend match days with our First Grade side, however he will take on a broad-reaching remit which will see him play a vital role in encouraging the development of players, tactical and cultural development and - I think vitally - the improvement of our Club’s standard of fielding. Steve also brings with him an amazing black book of contacts that we hope to use as leverage into sponsorship revenue. Joining Steve will be his long-time right-hand man, Warren Smith, as a Specialist Batting Coach. Formally Batting Coach for New South Wales, Warren has a long and decorated history in assisting the progression of batsmen through Grade, State and International ranks. Warren famously mentored Michael Slater on his journey to test cricket. Warren will work closely with Garry Sheen and his input will have a huge impact on our batting. He's also a no-nonsense operator, so shortcuts will no longer be tolerated. Michael Wholohan, Warren Buttigieg and Garry Sheen will continue their vital roles within the Club’s Coaching Team and their work ethic was on show last season. Michael will work alongside Steve Small in a newly-created position of Development Director. Whooly's ability to mentor our younger players is an invaluable asset for the Club and we need to ensure we utilize his skills in that regard, in addition to his usual work with players across all grades. We have commenced our newly-implemented ‘High Performance Batting Squad’ to address specific deficiencies amongst our best young players to hasten and exacerbate their improvement. Garry Sheen is leading this Squad which focuses very heavily on the mental approach to batting. The Club has invested significant resources into this Squad and hopes to see immediate results amongst our batsmen. Warren Buttigieg will again lead his pre-season bowling sessions, which were well received last season. We will be combining later sessions of the High Performance batting squad with the bowling squad. These sessions provide an opportunity for our bowlers to get an early start on their fitness while also refining technique. I am especially excited to announce that Jarrod Lee and Kevin Geyer will be joining the coaching staff for next season. Jarrod has accepted a significant role as fielding and fitness coach and will also coach our PG’s side alongside Ryan Smith. Jarrod has been asked to implement some formal structure in our fielding practice and ensure the standard of training in pre-season and training proper is significantly elevated. Similarly, Jarrod will be conducting a number of pre-season fitness sessions for interested players on Sundays at Howell Oval. Jarrod is the hardest trainer in our Club and he will expect that everyone come up to his standard. 6 Kevin Geyer has agreed to join us as Green Shield Coach. As a Club legend and former State Representative, I cannot think of a better man to help develop our young players in this iconic Competition. It will be fantastic to have Kevin involved with us again. In keeping with the theme of improving our methods, pre-season will also take on a different look this season. Our first pre-season training date will be August 10, with two further sessions to follow on August 17 and 24. Net trials will be held this season on the centre wicket at Rance Oval on Saturday’s August 31 and June 7 and 14. We will also endeavour to arrange our usual trial match on August 21. A new addition to the pre-season schedule is a likely trip to Bathurst for our higher-grade players. We are anticipating that we will be able to play an intra-squad match in Bathurst on either the 14th or 21st of September. Also part of this trip will be a coaching clinic for the Central-West’s younger players. This is a vital element in our efforts to re-establish our once-strong links in rural areas. Players not involved with this away trip will trial as normal at Rance Oval. This season will also see the resumption of the once-annual Stuart Webster Cup match between our Green Shield squad and a Central-Western combined under-17’s side. This game will be played at one of our grounds on September 26, prior to Round one. I’d like to congratulate both Chris Withers and Barry Coad on leading Fifth Grade and Colts respectively into the Finals. This is further evidence of the strength of our emerging players and underlines the need for us to ensure we foster this talent all the way through their journey to First Grade. Our Women’s Brewer Shield and 2nd Grade teams performed admirably with our Brewer Shield team finishing Runners-up in their Competition. The summary of their season is embodied in this report and congratulations go to all those ladies who made Representative honours and who had personal achievements in their careers. For the second year in a row our girls won the SCAWC Spirit of Cricket Award… you can be proud of your achievements as is your Club. To Kim Hinkley for all your efforts and to Sagar Pradhan who stepped into the coaching role and gave of your time to help out with the team, we thank you both for a job well done. On an individual note, sincerest congratulations to Luke Morrissey and Mark Graham, who join the greats of Penrith Cricket courtesy of individual achievements. Luke made his 5000th run for the Club during his brilliant season with the bat. Luke’s determination and competitive nature is an example to our emerging players. Always compete hard! Mark became the Club’s fifth-highest wicket-taker, passing the 400-wicket barrier. He’s one of our most enduring players and has a few seasons left in him yet. Perhaps 500 isn’t an unrealistic goal! I’d also like to acknowledge the outstanding career of Penrith Champion, Paul Goldsmith, who has announced his retirement. We have not seen a more lionhearted campaigner in our Club’s history and Goldie’s contribution to our Club as a player and captain is immeasurable. Congrats on all you have achieved in the game Paul. In closing, Committee and Coaching Staff are committed to providing all players with the best facilities, advice and resources possible to assist in preparing for training and games. The rest is over to you – the players! PENRITH CITY COUNCIL … Proudly supporting the Penrith Cricket Club 7 FIRST GRADE by Matthew Halse If you were to use one word to sum up season 2012/13 it would have to be disappointing. We only won 5 games, 4 of those were to teams below us on the table. By and large we were always competitive and at various stages of most games we were in with a chance. So whilst it was a disappointing season, I believe it will prove to be a season that will benefit us in the years to come. How much it has benefited us will probably be best judged at this time next year. One of the reasons this year will benefit the club is the emergence of some players who had their first taste of First Grade this season. Brent Williams made a massive jump this season from playing Third Grade to batting in the top order in First Grade. Squirt is an aggressive batsman who likes to play his shots. Whilst he struggled for consistency, there were enough signs to suggest that he is a player of real promise. His 72 against Randwick Petersham was all class and hopefully a glimpse of more to come. A pretty handy off spinner, Brent bowled particularly well in the short forms, especially at the death. Aaron Beach had the tough assignment of playing his first season of First Grade at a new club. He finished the year in the top 30 run scorers in Sydney with an impressive 460 runs at 33. Aaron scored a maiden First-Grade century against Parramatta, but possibly his best knock of the season was his 76 off 87 balls against Eastern Suburbs which lifted the side from a precarious position to a winning total. A fantastic season from a first-year player, well done Beachy. Luke Morrissey is a not so young player but he again led the way with the bat. Moz opened the innings most games this year and ended up with 609 runs at 43.5. Luke scored two centuries and a 90 and was our most reliable run scorer. Luke was in the top ten run scorers for the Competition and finished fourth in the O’Reilly Medal, both fine achievements. Of the other batsmen Shannon Finemore continued to show signs he is developing into a quality First Grade batsman, he just needs that breakthrough big score. Ryan Gibson at times looked really good but was unable to bat for long periods of time often enough. Pat Jackson was dynamic in the T20’s and came good after Christmas in the longer format with some good scores in quick time at the top of the order. Ben Betros got an extended run in the side after some good form in Second Grade. Initially a bit hesitant, Benny found the confidence to play his natural game towards the end of the season and with continued improvement can play a lot more First Grade. Patrick Cummins played the second half of the season as a batsman as he started his return from injury. Whilst he may not have scored as many runs as he and the team would have liked, Patty had a great attitude and provided a really positive influence around the side. Tim Cummins had another good year behind the stumps with 37 dismissals. Timmy also made some good progress with his batting this season. His 51 against Sydney University in tough conditions against a quality bowling attack nearly got us over the line and was one of the better innings played by any batsman this season. Tim also stepped in and captained the side during my absence and did a great job, at the helm for our first 3 wins of the season. On the bowling side of things our stocks were greatly boosted by the return of Jarrod Lee to the Club this year. A great club man and a strong leader on the training paddock, Jarrod got the return his hard work deserved. 33 wickets at an average of 21 was a real positive for the side. It is great to have “JL” back as a Panther. Josh Lalor had an injury-interrupted start to the season but came back with a bang taking 6 for 6 against Randwick Petersham, catapulting himself back into the NSW side. Despite limited appearances, Josh ended up with 31 wickets at 17.5 and remains one of the best bowlers in NSW. Josh has been rewarded with his Cricket NSW contract renewed for next season. In addition to his cricket skills, Josh continues to emerge as a strong leader for the Club both on and off the field. 8 Max McNamara had at times an inconsistent season, often following a brilliant spell of bowling with an average spell and vice versa. In the wash up, he finished with a very respectable 25 wickets at 25 with an impressive strike rate of 40. His two wickets against Randy Petes were two of the best balls you could hope to see and set us on the path to a comprehensive victory. Max is another whose leadership skills around the team are growing and he organises an exceptional end of season trip! Patrick Jackson remains, in my opinion, one of the best spin bowlers in Sydney outside the State Squad. 22 wickets at an average of 27, bowling on mostly unresponsive pitches was a good return. With Jacko, it is not necessarily how many wickets he gets, it’s the calibre of batsmen he knocks over and the manner in which he does it. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly our Round 5 fixture against eventual Semi-finalists Randwick Petersham at Coogee Oval. We bowled first and after a couple of early wickets Randwick appeared to be recovering at 2 for 33, with former test batsmen Simon Katich at the crease. What happened over the next hour was remarkable. Two quick wickets to Max opened the door for us to dismiss Randy Petes cheaply. The re-introduction of Josh Lalor after drinks began one of the best spells of bowling at First Grade level in this Club’s history. Josh took an amazing 6 for 2 during his second spell including the prize wicket of Katich. Randwick Petersham were all out for 49 an over after lunch. After some positive batting from Luke Morrissey who made a century and Brent Williams who scored 72 on Day One, we went on to win the game outright. A great two days for the cats in what was an otherwise frustrating season. The other main reason I believe this year will benefit the First Grade side in the coming years, is that it became obvious this season that there was a lack of infrastructure around the side. We were not giving ourselves the best opportunity to be successful. To the committee’s credit, as well as some other key figures around the side, some positive steps have been taken to rectify this. The appointment of Steve Small is a fantastic initiative for the team and the Club in general. Steve is already showing a great passion and energy for this role and I know that we as individuals and a team can improve and go to a higher level, so long as we are willing to commit and buy into what “Jack” will bring to the table. A lot goes into a day of First Grade cricket and the team was fortunate to have the support and help of people like Mike and Debbie Gibson, Andy Williams, the Lee’s, the Jacksons, the Finemores, the Cummins and our ever present scorer and part time Sydney Uni commentator Joe Poulter. Apart from being a good bloke and a good scorer, it became apparent during one of our many rain breaks this season that Joe is perhaps the best euchre player in our side! Thanks Joe, we hope to see you again next season. On the cricket side of things the team was assisted by Trevor Bayliss, Dale Turner, Ron Halse and Michael Wholohan at various stages of the year. Thank you gents. If I have missed anyone I apologise, everyone’s assistance this year be it great or small was greatly appreciated. Cricket is a somewhat a selfish pursuit so I would like to thank Sonya, Dannelle, Jayne, Laura, Kate, Hayden and Toby for giving up your boyfriend/fiancé/husband and father for the summer. Hopefully there has been an environment created where you feel welcome and enjoy coming to cricket….just a little bit! To my own beautiful wife Lauren and my gorgeous girls Edwina and Louella, thank you for your love and support, you make coming home after a bad day of cricket a lot easier. It was a great honour to be asked to captain our Second Grade side and despite some on-field challenges, a number of our best emerging players will derive great benefit from their experience in the near future. We showed glimpses of our ability but clearly should have won more games of cricket. Coming back to win outright after a first-innings defeat against Sydney was an amazing effort for a young team that was outplayed for the best part of two days. Defeating Easts by chasing down 290 from 5-100 was the best win I have been associated with at our great Club and the victory over Manly from an impossible position was extraordinary. Conversely, we also squandered wins against North Sydney and Sutherland due to immaturity and inexperience in chasing a target. This tells us we have the nucleus of a really good side. There is one thing that will determine the future success of all of us - and that is the willingness to do loads of hard work. We finished 18th, which is clearly a disappointing outcome, but I can still identify a number of positives to come out of our campaign; the most obvious was the emergence of some outstanding young cricketers who were rushed into a high level of cricket and acquitted themselves boldly. The obvious standout was Michael Collins, who graduated from a fourth grader to make his First-Grade debut in the space of half a season. Mick bowled superbly and is among the most promising pacemen Penrith has had in many years. His ability to swing the ball and extract bounce from an awkward height made him hard to handle. His haul of 24 wickets at 16, and a strike rate of 24, was an accurate reflection of his efforts. Mick is driven to succeed and is a great competitor. Indeed, I would regard our attack as being among the best in the Competition. The consistency of Kurt Niess (30 wickets at 23) is highly admirable and Niessy is someone that reinforces the notion that plain old hard work yields dividends. Kurt has worked tirelessly on his fielding and fitness and bowled beautifully again this season. I have flippantly suggested I have a man crush on Ryan Smith, but what captain wouldn't? Returning from a shoulder injury, Bomber's fitness improved each week and he will be back to his absolute best with the ball at the start of next season. However, there is nothing a captain admires more in a player than someone that busts his gut every time he’s asked for an effort and Bomber plays the game at 120% for the entire match. Our young cricketers should take note of the way Bomber worked at his batting and mental approach when he was unable to bowl. He's gone from handy middle-order hitter to the best all-round cricketer in Second Grade and potentially being a top-six bat in First Grade. His innings of 84 against Fairfield, which rescued our innings from a hopeless position, was an innings of sheer class. Taran Finemore enjoyed a successful season in 2's before going back to help 3's make a run for the Finals. He was unlucky to lose his spot and bowled very well on occasions during the year. Taran needs to work on his consistency to ensure he cements his place in higher grades but he is a dangerous proposition whenever he is handed the ball. Similarly, Paul Williams and Glenn Venables toiled manfully when they were given opportunities and are outstanding clubmen. 14 Ben Betros carried the bulk of the spin-bowling work before earning a deserved elevation to First Grade. Ben's off-spin is underrated as reflected by his 20 wickets at 16. His five-for against Sutherland was a tremendous display and should have won us the game, if not for our poor batting. Perhaps more telling was Ben's promotion to the new role of opening batsman this season, a position that allows him to dictate the game from the outset and put his team on the front foot. It had the effect of boosting his confidence and tightening his technique. I expect that with more hard work, Ben isn't far away from fulfilling the unbelievable potential we all know he has. Our young 'tweekers' Adrian Isherwood and Jake Wholohan were thrown into the lion’s den at various times and will be better for their experience. AJ's pugnacious middleorder batting was impressive and his bowling will come on dramatically as he continues to understand the importance of varying his pace. Jake's offies, against experienced batsmen, were excellent and continued work on his batting will see him develop into a quality allrounder. Both have a thirst for learning the game and have huge futures. The benefits to the Club of their exposure to high-grade cricket at a young age will be seen down the track. Clearly batting is a major issue facing our Club and it is the responsibility of every batsman to do all they can to fix the problems. As an older player, the most frustrating element of our failure with the bat this season was that the absolute majority of our dismissals were linked to a lack of mental application. We all get out to a good ball but there is no excuse to succumb to a lack of application. This is one area that every player in the Club can fix immediately. Be tough and fight hard - that is what grade cricket is about and we will not go forward as a Club unless we acknowledge that, across the board, our batting lacks toughness. Only one side, Blacktown, lost more wickets than us this season. We suffered 183 dismissals with the next side in line losing 15 wickets less. That is a damning statistic that should resonate with our batsmen. It is just not good enough. As mentioned, our all-rounders Ben and Bomber were our most consistent batsmen. There were noteworthy contributions throughout the season from Sagi Pradhan, whose century against Randwick Petersham was a tremendous exhibition of patient opening batting. Veteran Matthew Kimble was given an opportunity to play a season of Second Grade and showed that he remains good enough to compete at that level. Kimbo butchered three centuries this season! His 50's against North Sydney and Easts were classic knocks, as was his 75 against Fairfield when batting somewhat under the weather! Again, Kimbo's contribution as a team man was outstanding, as evidenced by his willingness to move into the opening role. There is none better. Youngsters Jacob Apicella and Jarrah Ferris-Smith were asked to carry a big responsibility in Second Grade this season. Jarrah started the season well and eventually made his First-Grade debut. A serious run of bad luck which saw him find new and unique ways to get out, made it a tough year for Jarrah. I have great belief in his ability and he will bounce back. Appa had a tough season statistically but started to relish the opportunity he was given to have an extended run at this level. Come the end of the year, Appa had found his feet as a batsman and within the team. Appa has the potential to be a great leader in the years ahead and with some serious hard work and determination with the bat, we will see a serious cricketer. He also possesses the driest sense of humour I have encountered and has the rare ability to consume his body weight of beer most nights. 15 It was fantastic to have Tim Sutton back on deck after a late start to the season. Sutto is a freakishly talented cricketer and a class above with the bat. I hope he can continue playing with us - he's an extraordinary talent and a pleasure to play beside. Another young gun promoted ahead of his time was wicketkeeper James Newton. Jimmy's glove work is pure and his footwork generally good. His attacking batting won us two games and he has an unlimited amount of potential and confidence beyond his years. My advice to Jimmy would be this - sheer ability can only carry you so far. Work hard on your keeping, mental approach to batting and fitness. You have a long career ahead if you do. In summary, we were a close unit that, despite doing it tough on the park at times, never lost its humour or camaraderie. It has been a pleasure to be able to lead such a great bunch of blokes and I am proud of how close we are as a side. Now for the acknowledgements. Sydney Sutherland Northern District 10 Wickets in a Match Nil. 19 THIRD GRADE by Paul Goldsmith It had been 21 years since I last played a game in 3rd Grade for the mighty Panthers and I certainly enjoyed the experience the second time round. I again played with a mix of young and old (relatively speaking of course) and appreciate the opportunity the Club gave me to captain the side. Before I continue with a summary of the season’s highlights and the occasional lowlight, I would like to thank the many people involved in the running of our Club as it will be the last time I get to do so as a player. It is time to hang up the boots and pack away the cover drive for good to spend more time with my family on a Saturday and enjoy the odd game of golf. To Greg Gavin and Ross Graham and the rest of the Committee and Coaching Staff, a big thank you for your efforts in the running of the Club; no doubt the work has increased with the new pavilion to manage. I’d also like to thank the other Captains for their support and also the wise counsel of Ron Halse and John Benaud with regard to selections; it’s never an easy task but it’s one which you have great passion for. To Chris Withers and Barry Coad, congratulations to yourselves and your teams on making the Semi-final’s, to do so with such young teams and high turnover of players is a wonderful achievement. To all the guys who played in 3rd Grade this year and in particular those who were with us for most of the year, I want to thank you for your support, the laughs and the blow-ups but most importantly for your friendship. For the most part I think we had a successful season finishing 9th and a couple of wins outside of the Finals, which is probably a fair reflection of our performances. We struggled to put big runs on the board but we usually had a superior bowling attack to the opposition which allowed us to continue winning. There were some very good individual performances, however for the most part we won games because we played well as a team. It was pleasing to see a number of players be selected in the higher grades, I firmly believe that a number of others can go on and have successful First Grade careers and maybe more if they work hard. With 25 players used throughout the season there isn’t enough space to highlight the performances of each so I will cover a few of the game highlights. Following an ordinary performance in the first round we turned it around with a convincing win against Campbelltown on the back of some good batting from Steven Gavin and young Jake Wholohan who is developing into a promising all-rounder with his spin bowling, and who is still the keenest cricketer I have met. It is no surprise Mick Wholohan has a custard arm, it must be worn out after all the throwdowns ! After posting a competitive total, the evergreen Danny Dent (Tinman) then took 5 for 22 to bowl us to victory. This was the start of another very consistent year from Tinman. He might move a little slower but is still highly competitive. You only have to see Danny lead the team song to understand the passion he has for the Club! We had a comfortable win against UNSW thanks to Lenny Pascoe hitting 58 and then Mick Collins with 4 wickets and big Grant ‘Chewbacca’ Maguire with 3 wickets knocking them over cheaply. We missed the big wookie for the last part of the year but I hope to see Grant back again next year as he has real potential to turn into a quality fast bowler. It was to be the last we saw of Mick as he went on to play his maiden first grade game later on in the year. The following game petered out to a draw against Sydney but not before Matt Newton showed his continued development with a patient 97. With more knocks like his we would have scored many more runs as a team. I found this game extremely frustrating with the Sydney team batting on into the second week leaving us only 70 overs to chase down a target of 270. I can understand this approach if a team struggles for ability but the Sydney team were a talented young outfit led by a skipper who was waiting for us to lose the game instead of trying to win it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Tinman angry before but the Tigers tactics got him steamed up, I’m just not sure how he managed to throw that 10-pound bat of his over the fence! 20 We won 4 of our last 5 games leading into Christmas with some comfortable wins and a tight one against Randwick Petersham. Tinman and I put on 77 for the last wicket with a great display of power hitting (it’s true) before a team effort with the ball and some nervous catching got us home by 12 runs. The one-day wins were punctuated with some good knocks from a number of players that included a superb knock of 96* from young Jacob Apicella in 44 degree heat v Mosman, aggressive knocks from Lenny and Gavo against Sutherland and good recoveries from Jon Collins and Adrian Isherwood (AJ) against Easts. We also welcomed Glenn Venables (Veges) to the team for the first time and whilst he might move in the field like a new-born baby Giraffe he certainly knows where the stumps are. He put his hand up to bowl into a gentle breeze so I could come downwind and between us with 5 wickets and a couple from young AJ we knocked Easts over for 98. Unfortunately the last game of the calendar year was to be the last Brett Russell would play. He was leading the team with a great knock when he top-edged one into his lip. He was 43 at the time and wanted to continue on but with a nasty gash he had to head off to the hospital for a lengthy wait. I hope we see Rusty back next year because he is a great talent with the bat and brings humour and enthusiasm to the team. We suffered something of a post-Christmas hangover, winning only one of the last six games although weather did play its part in contributing to 2 draws. We really suffered due to our inability to post decent scores with the sole win coming off the back of a great bowling performance against Parramatta when defending only 152. The fact we scored that many was thanks mostly to Matt Newton, Cameron Weir and a very patient knock from Gavo who followed this up with a gutsy knock in the second innings when we threatened to fall apart and hand Parramatta the points back. For those old enough to remember former Penrith opener Jason Arnberger (successful first class career with NSW & VIC), there’s more than a passing resemblance between Jason and Cameron so expect to see good things from Cameron in the future. The bowling performance was led by 3 wickets each from Veges and Taran Finemore. Taran will be the first to admit his radar occasionally goes awry but when he gets it right he bowls with good pace and shape and on this day he got it right. Some other notable performances in the closing rounds include Veges 72* (with 3 big sixes) against Manly batting at number 10 and his 6 for 40 against Northern District, Taran’s 3 wickets also v ND’s and Jarrah’s 54 and Tinman’s 37 v Wests. I’d also like to recognise the other players who were with us throughout the season, in some way you all played your part in the team’s success. Thanks to Gotty, James Pinter, Bushy Williams, Squirt, Jake Collins (I have a question to put to you: should a man be fined or rewarded for teaching his girlfriend to score? I’ll leave that one with you to debate), Pete Gregersen, Adam Bayliss, Tom Harris and baby face James Newton. There are a few other people who also need to be recognised. Lenny’s mum is a godsend at the tea break. Without her to put everything out and clean up our teas would have been a shambles. I don’t understand why Lenny ever moved out! Thanks to Mick Cairns for your support and for picking up the slack with the covers. Lastly, a big thanks to Trevor Wholohan who works extremely hard to keep Bill Ball Oval looking in good shape. I also still get a laugh when you stoke the fires of the opposition. It can never be said you are short of a word. In closing I have to give enormous thanks to my wife Lynette and beautiful kids, Luke and Lauren. You have once again waved me goodbye on a Saturday morning so I could disappear all day Saturday and put up with my whingeing. Now that I will be home on Saturday’s sleeping in and lazing about you may wish I never retired. Campbelltown-Camden Sydney Northern District Nil. 24 FOURTH GRADE by Mark Graham Firstly I would like to congratulate both Chris Withers (5s) and Barry Coad (Metro Cup) on achieving a Semi-final appearance with their respective teams. I would also like to congratulate all the boys that were a part of your teams throughout the Finals. It was a year that the Cats struggled throughout. The cascade effect of absent players, to lack of experience, showed as the results spoke for themselves. More commitment is needed and harder work ethic is required. I would encourage all players to work hard in the offseason and be prepared for the early games as this has proven to be a weak spot for the Cats and adds extreme pressure to the end of the year with the need then to win those pressure games. In a frustrating year for 4th Grade there are always some positive outcomes: Loch Coad proved to be very valuable with the ball, being our leading wicket-taker with 21 @ 17.86 & best figure of 5/26. I was more than impressed with his progress from game one to the last game of the season and his ever-growing confidence and ability to listen. The more time Loch had with the ball the better he bowled. He is a solid player & will play higher grades in the future. Jacob New showed he has the ability to play higher-grade cricket with a superb batting technique and a positive attitude to the game itself. Although Jacob didn’t have the best of luck whilst playing 4th Grade you could definitely see that he is on the cusp of scoring some big higher-grade scores. The bad luck always has to turn around. Peter Gregersen showed just how dangerous he can be with the ball this year. At the start of the year Peter was picked as a batsman and after a few games struggled through lack of form. However through gutsy determination and a great attitude Peter excelled especially with the ball. Every time a wicket needed to be taken Peter was the man. Pete you are always welcome in my side! I would have liked to have had Jake Collins for a longer period in my side as we started to see how good Jake could bat. His aggressive stroke play was always exciting to watch. His presence whilst in 4th Grade made a significant difference and bolstered our brittle top six performances. Our side needed a little more experience in the top order. Adam Bayliss was our top-scoring batsman with 254 runs @ 16.93. I am thankful for Adam’s season; batting at 6 or 7 he frequently found himself under great pressure with not too many runs on the board when he came to the crease, but he got on with the job. Without his contribution as well as some after-Christmas contributions by Joshua Betros, we might well have struggled even more in the batting department. The underlying problem with our batting – not only in 4th Grade – but with the Club, is not only inexperience but lack of balance in our cricket teams. Promotion needs to be earned, not on 1 or 2 performances, but on several solid performances. Players must do the apprenticeships first, that way they will not be punching above their weight. Thank you for the support of some of the senior members within the team such as: Josh Betros, Tim Whiticker, Peter Gregersen, and Peter Gott in particular. Your support and thoughts throughout were valuable and greatly appreciated. A big thank you to all players that helped out with the worst job on Friday nights of covering the wicket. FIFTH GRADE by Chris Withers The 2012/13 season was a remarkable season for 5th Grade finishing 3rd on the ladder and only falling one game short of a Grand-final experience. Playing 15 competition matches, winning 10 and drawing 2 was a tremendous effort considering we were one of the youngest teams of the year. Despite such a young team we managed to take big steps in the development of key personnel, which was an objective for the season. A number of players stepped up to show their calibre as cricketers and character in general. It was an important year of learning for many of the boys involved in 5th Grade, one that will hopefully lay a foundation for many premierships to come in the years ahead. Beyond our achievements as a team, there were also a number of standout individual performances which deserve credit. To begin with, Pete Gregersen, the in-form strike bowler all season. Took 42 wickets at an average of 11.45; he was the match-winner in most of our wins and also took 3 fivewicket hauls in rounds 4,7 and 11. Handy with the bat also, scoring 200 odd runs including 2 important half-centuries; Pete had a great year and was the backbone of 5th Grade. Ryan Smith who started the season captaining this great side before going up the grades in round 5, scored an impressive 174 not out in round 1 and also a 97 in round 3. Jake Hausfeld who notched up his maiden grade century against Sydney Tigers in round 4 scoring 121. Tyran Liddiard was one of the great success stories of 5th Grade. The smallest bloke in the team, yet had the biggest ticker of us all. Taking 27 catches behind the sticks and batting for 7 not outs at an average of 24.5 is a fabulous effort for a 16-year-old in his first year of grade cricket. Gabe Woodland was our leading run-scorer for the year, producing a magnificent 119 against Parramatta in the Semi-final. Gabe scored 367 runs in the season and was a handy performer with the ball also. The man of many voices, Josh Dowd had a decent year with the stick scoring 248 runs for the season. Josh scored 77 in round 3 and a cheeky 66 to get us over the line in round 5 against Randwick. Josh has plenty of potential and will play higher grades with his sheer determination and hard work. Jacob New who has the toughest job of all batsmen - opening the batting. Jacob showed fighting spirit all year and plenty of enthusiasm in the field. Scoring a match-winning 75 in the last round, Jacob has plenty of ability and with his hard work at training, this will get him up the grades in no time. Luke Hodges came of age through the year maturing into a match-winning cricketer. Luke changed mid-year from a pace bowler to spin and it paid dividends as he took back to back 5-wicket hauls in rounds 14 and 15. Luke was a success with the bat also scoring 250 runs in the year. Shaun Kitchener played the first half of the year up the grades before coming to 5th Grade. Shaun took 27 wickets for the season and bagged a well-deserved 5-wicket haul against St. George in the Semi-final. Kitch took 15 wickets in the last 8 games of 5th Grade he played. 30 Daniel Sparkes was our surprise factor becoming our all-rounder mid-season. The youngest in our team yet the tallest, Daniel scored his maiden half-century against Randwick; Daniel is also a handful with the ball. With age and maturation Sparksey will find himself playing higher grade cricket sooner rather then later. Jackson Edwards and Kaine Balgowan were the unluckiest bowlers in 5th Grade this year. Taking 18 wickets between them and being the quickest bowlers in the competition proved that no batsmen could compete with them. Seeing them up the grades in the near future will prove a handful for batsmen and wickets a-plenty will come for both players. It was a successful and enjoyable year with many other great efforts and contributions. Firstly a big thank you to Mick Sparkes, Clint and Gissel New, Glenn and Kelly Liddiard, Liz Dowd and Rod Edwards for their support and help during the year. Very much appreciated. The results of such a successful season are very much a product of your tireless work. Another crucial part of the year is selections, so thank you to Ron Halse and John Benaud for your advice and work through the season. Again this year in Metro Cup (Colts) a couple of older blokes mentored the young lads who again had a successful and most enjoyable season. The Colts finished on 60 points after round 15 including 9 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw and 1 loss outright. Although we lost in the Semi-final to Blacktown the young future players of our Club enjoyed playing at head office (“Mother Howell”) and the experience gained was invaluable. The Qualifying Final at David Phillips against UNI NSW displayed our bowling strength as, after losing the toss on a very flat wicket, UNI were all out for 129 with Matthew Rech 3/21, Brendan Sweeney 1/13 from 15 overs and Jake Day 3/12 from 10 overs. In reply we struggled to 167 from 81 overs; however a superb innings from Matthew Rech of 43 steadied the innings. UNI then scored a quick-fire 160 from 21 overs to put pressure on us on the second day. However, a solid 47 from Andrew Hazard prevented any likely collapse. Favorable results in other games allowed the team to play the Semi-final at Howell Oval against Blacktown. We left our worst performance with the bat until last and after being sent in were all out for 86. In reply Blacktown were all out for 148 with Jake Day 4/9 and Mathew Rech 4/24 the best. In our second innings trying to score quick runs we were all out for 112, however my old mate Michael McGuire scored a flamboyant 39 under pressure. Whilst Blacktown scored the required 50-odd runs and went on to win the Competition the following week, the lads tried hard to the death and showed great team spirit. The most pleasing aspect of this game was again our bowling performance. Our bowling performances were fantastic all season however, sadly, our batsmen let them down time and again including in the Semi-final. Batting time and being patient was always going to be the “key” to our finals’ campaign. All the lads are now very aware of finals’ “pressure”. This season has seen the emergence of a number of young talented and enthusiastic players in the Colts, many being in their first year including Andrew Hazard, Jake Day, Brendan Morley, Tom Sargeant and Wally Nadeem. In addition to the above, other younger players in their first year included Jake Hausfeld, Connor New, Lachlan Smith, Jordan Zeeman, Brock Balgowan and Josh O’Grady. The continuous “drop-outs” on Friday evening and injury toll makes it difficult to maintain team unity in Colts and hence requirement for the Club to have a sound train-on “squad”. The Club has importantly encouraged the spinners including young Andrew Hazard who took 19 wickets for the season with a best performance of 5/34 and “Wally” who took 26 wickets at 12.8 with a magnificent best of 6/9. “Wally” is a very talented “quiet achiever” and together with “Haz” formed a great spinning team. These lads are a credit to the Club. 35 Our opening and change bowlers were also fantastic this season including “The Sweeny” who took 15 wickets, however was often extremely unlucky; Matthew Rech who took 17 wickets with a best performance of 4/24; and young Jake Day who took 16 wickets including 4/9 as well as scored 299 runs at an average of 24.9. Mr Day is a quality young man who looked like scoring a well-earned century against Gordon in round 12 until his “aging” Captain ran him out for 85. Blake Langer enjoyed a fantastic season and was extremely unlucky not to play in the 5th Grade Finals. He took 14 wickets in Colts with a best of 6/42 and 13 wickets in 5th Grade at an average of 12.2. Blake can play significantly higher Grades with improved batting. Jake Hausfeld scored a century in 5th Grade and played 4th Grade during the season, however, performances landed him in Colts for the last few games. Jake has an excellent future in the game. Our young wicket keeper “Tommy” Sargeant is a breath of fresh air in this team and the improvement in his batting and keeping has been obvious to all over the season. “Tommy” scored 277 runs in Colts at an average of 23.1 with a highest score of 66. A special thanks also must go to the Evergreen Michael McGuire who was consistent all season as well as providing valuable support and advice to the Captain and all the players. His 39 in the Semi-final was a pleasure to watch. A Season in the Grade scene will benefit many players in particular Brendan Morley who scored a magnificent 71 against North Sydney, however fell away towards the later part of the season. Improved fitness, self-confidence and patience will be the key for this young man. Special thanks need to go to other players who in many cases were given very short notice to play including Josh O’Grady, Jordan Zeeman and Sam Wearne. The Penrith Colts is a valuable learning ground for our junior players and the experience gained will result in higher honors in 2013/14 season for all involved. A special thanks to our support crew this season which included Messrs Hazard, Day, Sargeant, Nadeem and Morley. A special thanks also goes to both John Benaud and Michael Wholohan for their input and coaching roles during the season. Let’s hope we have these 2 gents again next season. It is very important that the young lads maintain a high commitment to training and have consistent weekly performances in order to gain higher honors. Whilst we were defeated by Blacktown in the Semi-final this season, to coin a well-known Winston Churchill phrase: “we may have lost the battle but we will win the war”. Some of the names that have passed through those successful ranks have gone on to better things—Patrick Cummins (Australia), Josh Lalor (NSW), Jordan Silk (Tasmania Rookie Contract), Josh Clarke and Ryan Gibson (NSW U/19). Such success speaks volumes for the Club’s ability to identify, and, to develop young talent. This season we hit the wall. It was unfortunate that Clarke chose to depart for Campbelltown, and, more unfortunate to lose Silk—but what a tribute to his talent and a work ethic that all should aspire to—as those two had been key players in our forward planning, the experienced types to fill the team leadership roles, the mentors for Gibson and Brent Williams. So, the selectors presented the two rookie Ryans, coach Smith and captain Gibson, with a vastly inexperienced squad, and the learning curve proved too steep. However, if the players can in future muster a greater desire to succeed, also concentration, nous, patience and imagination to handle tough situations then they will be better for the experience. The squad does have balance. It needs maturity, and to gel more as a team, which it should, as individual skills, strengths and weaknesses under pressure have been sorted. We did not win a match, yet, there were moments in four when it was possible to think: “We can win this.” Those matches were against Bankstown (T20), Gordon, Blacktown and Hawkesbury. The Bankstown loss was with only two balls to spare, and a win would have been a great fillip first up for the young team. The R4 Gordon result was particularly frustrating, as we had played our best cricket yet. The batting was well structured, and, we batted our overs. Then ‘the big fella’ (Grant Maguire) came out hurling bombs, Gordon 4/38. Not long after, a quaint umpiring decision over wrecked stumps offered their eventual century-maker, and match-winner, a lifeline. Our boys’ negative reaction to the setback confirmed their immaturity. We had Blacktown covered, 3/116 chasing down 186. The Howell pitch is slow and batting requires patience in spades. We fell 15 runs short—with 31 balls to spare. The Hawkesbury match was a mix of Gordon and Blacktown. Had them 4/12, lost concentration in the field, then we batted for only 32.3 of our 50 overs chasing 236. The bowling was our strength. Grant Maguire thoroughly deserved his Player Of The Year Award. He has height, pace, bounce and aggro, the right mix for a fast bowler. His strike-rate was a phenomenal 15 balls a wicket. He could go much further with the right approach and some helpful advice, and support, from older, mature players. Advice on running technique would be useful, too. Michael Collins’ rise through the ranks has been rapid. He offered the best option for this combination as first change, but elsewhere the new ball may be an option. The spinners, Williams, Wholohan and Isherwood are raw, but potentially offer a lot. When Bayliss and Edwards gather some self-confidence their contributions promise to be effective. For the batsmen, constructing the innings remained a puzzle to the end. Even in limited-overs cricket, patience and a clear mind are valuable assets. The most disappointing aspect of our game—and, indeed the Club as a whole—was the fielding. Speed across the ground was lacking. Our concentration span seemed all too brief, sapped at the 20-over mark. Lack of fitness is clearly a major problem. There was panic under pressure. Such negatives can all be resolved via better commitment. Gordon 42 GREEN SHIELD REPORT by Jake Wholohan (Captain) Unfortunately this season was a disappointing one for the U16 men. A team full of potential but only performed well in patches. As with every cricket team, there was bad luck but it’s not an excuse. The team had 3 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie! There were a number of positives that came out of the campaign, notably the gutsy win against Hawkesbury over at Bensons Lane. Our campaign started in August with the Development Squad that was led by Michael Wholohan with Shannon Finemore and Mick Sparkes assisting. Quite a large squad was eventually cut down to 15. Our official beginning was on the 4th of January against Bankstown. A game of cricket that won’t be forgotten! Some gutsy lower-order hitting resurrected our mediocre score to 209. Sam Wearne and Tom Sargeant played out of their skin. Cut long story short, Bankstown needed 51 of the last 5 overs. They got 50. A game of emotion to say the least! The next 2 encounters were both losses which really put a stop to the boys’ hopes of a finals’ berth. R2 was against St George which was a real grudge match for 3 of our boys in particular. On a very hot day, there were lapses of concentration which saw St George tower on the runs. 243 was the target. Once again the majority of the top order failed with Cam Weir being the only one to show class at the crease. The lower order played a huge part again (unfortunately!) with the last 3 batsmen putting on about 60. We were all out 222. Our third game saw us up against the Stags from Gordon at Cook Park. We were rolled for 67 – enough said. We bowled well without luck but were never going to win with 67 on the board. Finally! The next 2 games saw the Cats with some points. Two very convincing wins against Hawkesbury and Blacktown gave the boys some confidence. Jake Wholohan scored 72 against Hawkesbury which just about equalled his runs for the year! Cameron Weir dominated the Blacktown attack scoring 88 not out. Andrew Hazard bowled a very quick spell at Bensons to see Penrith get the win right before the rain. A very gutsy and confidence-boosting 2 games. Losing the next game to UNSW was a real kick to the stomach. Seeing the depth of cricketers UNSW had was quite disappointing. With us posting 152, they were 2/120. A good spell from Jake Day created a collapse. They got the runs 7 down. R3 was a re-played game due to the heat cancelling the original date. We came across a very weak Sydney Tigers. At mother Howell we batted first and got 201. They were all out for 139. Jake Hausfeld led the batting with 56 while Jordan Zeeman picked up 3 wickets and Wally Nadeem with 2. Unfortunately not the season we hoped for but some good young talent coming through! Andrew Hazard and Daniel Sparkes were certainly guys to watch for the future due to their sheer hard work. Everyone in this squad showed what they are capable of. A big congratulations to Cameron Weir who was the only bloke from Penrith selected in the NSW U17 squad. Good work! Plenty of good signs for the Cats! 43 A.W. Players who filled in for us: (Tayla Aldous, Kaelah Austin, Eliza Bunner, Madisen Carling, Dorothy Fiulemi, Hayley Lihou, Brittany Naden, Jessica Powyer, Tayla Seymour, Vicki Springetti, Nikk Woods) The success of the 2011/12 Season was always going to be hard to back up in Season 2012/13. As the team had been so dominating in the Brewer Shield Competition last season, the decision was made to enter 2 teams in the SCA Women’s Competition for Season 2012/13. In doing this it was acknowledged by everyone involved that the 2012/13 Season would be one of ‘development’ and that we needed to approach the move to two teams with patience and perseverance. To add to the mix of the new 2-team structure was the stepping down of Bruce Felsch from the leadership of the Squad. Fortunately, from a coaching perspective Sagi Pradhan (2nd Grade Men’s team) stepped into the role immediately and was able to provide some support in that area straight away together with Taran Finemore. We are very thankful to the male players who assisted the girls with training and pre-season support in those early days of the 2012/13 Season. Penrith were represented in the SCA Women’s Competition in Season 2012/13 by a Brewer Shield (U17) team and a 2nd Grade Team. Brewer Shield Competition Our Brewer Shield Team was ably led again this season by Holly Wilson who had captained the team the previous season. Holly was supported in leading the team by several experienced Brewer Shield players. These girls were joined by several much younger girls in their first year of female grade cricket. The Brewer Shield season began with the T/20 competition. Our girls only managed to win 1 game in the T/20 competition – finishing on the bottom of the T/20 table. Of course this was disappointing from the point of view of having won the Competition undefeated the prior season but from the point of view of developing the new, younger players it was a good start to the season and a great warm up for the Limited Overs Competition. Coming out of the T/20 competition at the bottom of the table the Penrith girls had something to prove to the other clubs and with several of their older, experienced players now back from Representative commitments the other clubs were in for a little surprise! In the regular rounds our girls were able to win 4 from 9 with 2 games being washed out and 1 bye; they only experienced 2 losses. This fantastic effort saw the team finish 3 rd on the table after the regular rounds – Penrith was back!! The Penrith team met Campbelltown-Camden in the Semi-Final at Raby. In an absolute nail-biterof-a- game our girls were set 179 runs to chase after Campbelltown-Camden finished their innings. Our courageous girls fought hard all the way and won the game with just 3 balls to spare finishing 6/183. We were quietly confident going into the Grand Final against Sydney at Asquith Oval, however due to a washout we had not played the Sydney team in the Limited-Overs regular rounds so weren’t really sure what to expect. Sydney won the toss and put us in to bat and before long all our toporder batters were back in the sheds. Sydney had us all out for just 77 runs in the 23rd over. Not known for giving up, our girls were determined to turn things around in the field – unfortunately it wasn’t to be and even with some very good and economic bowling Sydney had reached the target by the 23rd over. Even though a win would have been a perfect end to the season for the Brewer Shield Team, to finish runner’s up in the Limited Overs Competition showed just how much these girls had learned and developed over the season and just how great Season 2013/14 is looking for the younger ladies of Penrith Cricket Club Women’s Squad. 2nd Grade Team With Season 2012/13 being our first entry into the 2nd Grade Competition with this team, we were sure we could be competitive but did not have an expectation of where we might finish in the Competition. 46 Unfortunately the season became a difficult one, particularly for our 2nd Grade team, due to the irregular availability of several of our players. Often this team played with 10, 9 and sometimes even 8 players which isn’t optimal when you are playing a T/20 game let alone a 50-over match. That aside, what the majority of the girls did show was courage and determination to play their best regardless of the circumstances. The team managed to win 4 games – 2 in the T/20 competition and 2 in the Limited (50) Over Competition. They also experienced a very exciting ‘tied’ match against Northern District in the 2nd round of the Limited Overs Competition. We are certain, with an improved team structure and a regular player roster, Season 2013/14 will be a very exciting one for our 2nd Grade Team. Season Summary Together with the Brewer Shield Team reaching the Limited Overs Grand Final, some really great things were achieved by our Women’s Squad Members in Season 2012/13. We travelled to Dubbo for our inaugural “Penrith & Western – City/Country Development Partnership” weekend. This was a terrific weekend of cricket – initiated by Bruce Felsch and supported by Cricket NSW. We eagerly look forward to hosting Western Zone in the 2013/14 pre-season at home in Penrith. We had 7 players involved in the Cricket NSW Academy Squads: Ashley Day, Danielle Armstrong, Mikayla Hinkley, Amy Edgar, Tilly Power, Samantha Arnold and Holly Wilson. Danielle Armstrong, Ashley Day and Mikayla Hinkley were selected for the NSW U15 ‘City’ team. Amy Edgar and Tilly Power were selected for the NSW U15 ‘Country’ team. Mikayla Hinkley (c), Danielle Armstrong, Ashley Day, Amy Edgar and Tilly Power were selected for the NSW U15 team. NSW Imparja Cup Women’s Team representatives: Madison and Rhiannon McCooey NSW All Schools Honours Team: Holly Wilson Mikayla Hinkley achieved SCAWC’s Brewer Shield Highest Batting Average (268 runs @ 134.00) And most importantly: Penrith Cricket Club was awarded the Sydney Cricket Association Women’s Competition’s “Spirit of Cricket” Award for the second consecutive season. Congratulations to our young ladies for continuing to show strong sportsmanship and teamwork, even under what were at times, difficult circumstances during the season. Auditor’s Report will be presented at this year’s AGM. The last 12 months has reflected a favourable increase in sponsorship and functions revenue although total revenue was down on 2012 due mainly to "once only" grants received from Penrith City Council & cricket NSW in 2012, contributing $94,948.00 to development of Howell Oval electronic scoreboard & other capital expenditure. Other increases in expenditure which need to be noted include: Repair of equipment (rollers etc.) at $19,403.68 compared to $2,379.09 in 2012. Electricity costs have also doubled from $5,337 in 2012 to $11,099. The other area of major cost increase was administration office which we note included the Facility Manager’s payments which went from $13,494.20 up to $29,712. Signage sponsorship has improved to $13,273 with contra deals totalling $9,000 (works to facility in lieu of cash) therefore total of $22,273.00 compared to $6,909.00 in 2012 (69% increase). Indoor hire has also increased from $1,346 up to $5,295.45 (75%) showing benefits of increased usage and promotion together with function room hire which has significantly improved from $545.45 up to $4,616.00. Increase in sponsorship from Penrith Leagues Club has also been negotiated by the Facility Manager from $12,000 to $15,000. It is important also to note we have secured a Grant from the NSW Govt to provide a well-needed new boundary fence to Rance Oval and two covered shelters for $25,000 plus GST which is awaiting payment and pending commencement of works. The canteen shows a profit of $5,088.00 for the year & we hold stock ($880, cost) which should generate sales of $1700.00. The employment contract for the Facility Manager’s position was formalised in April, 2013 which should allow for further growth in function and sponsorship revenue in the next 12-month period. As at 31/4/13 a healthy current cheque account balance of $59,140.34 was noted. The new Clubhouse has continued to be promoted including regular use by Local Member and Assistant Federal Treasurer Mr David Bradbury as well as the general community of Penrith. Improvements to the Howell Oval cricket square and practice square has recently been carried out as well as further concreting works to the surrounds of the pavilion, & purchase of new lawnmower etc. It is envisaged further improvement in signage sponsorship and function room hire revenue should now occur given establishment of the Facility Manager’s Agreement and associated number of new deals in the pipeline. 56 Penrith District Cricket Club Inc. We thank you all for your support. 61 AWARD WINNERS 2012/2013 Penrith Cricket Club Player of the Year: Peter Gregersen & Ryan Smith The Player of the Year Award is adjudged on the 15 common Rounds of the Competition only, placing all players from each Grade on a “level playing field”. Points are discussed, agreed upon & awarded in post-match team talks by their peers on a 3-2-1 basis, the player attaining the most points deemed to be the winner of the Award. This system of adjudication ensures that this Award usually reflects consistency of performances throughout the Season over the 15 rounds, rather than just one or two outstanding performances. Shared jointly this year by Peter Gregersen – whose consistent bowling performances yielded 42 wickets @ 11.45 with three five-wicket hauls & BBI being 5/13 & also 233 runs - and Ryan Smith who attained 594 runs @ 39.60, highest-score of 174* & 19 wickets @ 25.05. These players demonstrate that wholehearted & consistent performances in their respective grades each week produce Winners! Panthers Limited Overs – Player of the Year: Luke Morrissey Strong performances in the shorter form of the game contributing to his season’s tally of 609 @ 43.50 saw Luke secure this Award. Penrith City Council – Colts Player of the Year: Tom Sargeant Scoring 327 runs @ 19.24 in his first year with Penrith, Tom was the dominant winner of this Award. Penrith Bowling & Recreation Club – T20 Player of the Series: Patrick Jackson Clearly able to score quick runs in this form of the game, Patrick snared the major points from two of the three games to win this Award comfortably. Cammack Outstanding All Rounder: Ryan Smith Adjudged on the 15 common rounds of the Competition… 594 Runs, 19 wickets & 15 catches gave Ryan the dominant edge over Ben Betros, Pat Jackson & Daniel Dent to win this year’s Award. Criteria for assessment: 1 point per run; 10 points per wicket and 10 points per catch; Minimum 250 runs & 15 wickets) Trevor Wholohan Fielding Award: Adam Bayliss Always giving his team 150% in the field each & every week secured Adam this Award. He in fact was a very dominant winner, receiving the fielding award points from his peers in 9 of the 15 rounds. John R. Turk Rookie of the Year Award: Tyran Liddiard This was Tyran’s first year in Grade Cricket. A genuine rookie... graded in 5th Grade, he took 27 catches & 1 stumping (28 dismissals) & contributed with 180 runs @ 15.63 with the bat... a gutsy player & one for the future. Bob Thomas Encouragement Award: Luke Hodges Luke had a good strong second-half to the season, undoubtedly maturing as a cricketer... 268 runs @ 17.87 & 20 wickets @ 11.60 including 2 five-wicket hauls, BBI being 5/17... warrants encouragement for the seasons ahead. 62 The Hix Group Poidevin-Gray Player of the Series Award: Grant Maguire Grant was our dominant bowler in the Poidevin-Gray Competition with 14 wickets @ 13.36, BBI 5/45. His consistent performances won him this year’s Award in a team that was young & inexperienced. Bill Ball Memorial A.W. Green Shield Player of the Series Award: Cameron Weir The team’s top run-scorer with 227 runs @ 37.83, showcasing two 50s & highest score of 88* plus the equal-leading wicket-taker for the team – 9 @ 21.44 - won Cameron this year’s Award. Perce Hargreaves Club Person of the Year: Michael Sparkes Always a difficult Award to decide with so many good contributors. Michael’s help with the A. W. Green Shield team & his enthusiasm in faithfully running fielding drills each week at training have won him this year’s Award. Trevor Bayliss Batting Award: Luke Morrissey With 609 runs @ 43.50 including 2 /100s & 4/50s, highest-score of 105*... leading run-getter for the Club & scoring a lot of those runs in pressure situations... Luke deserves this Award. He has also achieved a personal milestone of 5,000 runs in all grades in his career. Paul Thomas Bowling Award: Peter Gregersen 42 wickets @ 11.45; 3 five-wicket hauls with BBI of 5/13... gave Peter this year’s Award. Often overlooked, Peter proved to be the “go to” man in 4s & 5s when partnerships needed to be broken. A reliable & valuable player. Vintage FM 87.6 Penrith Cricket Club Women’s Cricketer of the Year: Holly Wilson Holly Wilson successfully captained the Brewer Shield Side to a Finals place in the Limited Overs Competition. During the season, Holly mentored and guided her young team through the Competition by leading from the front. She scored 335 runs at an average of 30.45 for the season with a top score of 52. She also managed to remain tidy during the season collecting 7 catches, 1 stumping and 3 run outs. She is a worthy recipient of this Award. Complete Recruitment Solutions Penrith Cricket Club Women’s Most Improved: Rhiannon McCooey & Elise Pelle This Award is a tough award to give out as all of the girls showed a remarkable improvement this year. However, the ones that stood out the most are: 1. Rhiannon McCooey: Rhiannon showed an exponential improvement in ability this season. As her confidence grew, her shots improved. She quickly grew to a dynamic batter who was often called upon to face the hard, swinging new ball and get the team off to a good start. This was a remarkable achievement from where she was 12 months ago and can be attributed to hard work, determination and believing in herself as a good player. Furthermore, her bowling and fielding have improved no end and was well rewarded with a place in the Imparja Cup Side. 2. Elise Pelle: Young Elise Pelle was never one to back down from a challenge. She worked extremely hard at her game this season taking on the advice provided by the coaches. As a result, she showed a huge improvement to her game in both the batting and bowling departments resulting in some dynamic performances during the season. Her hard work was realised against Bankstown where she played a fine innings showing great maturing and skill. She will go a long way in her cricketing career with the attitude and determination she has. Professionals Real Estate Scholarship Award: Matthew Newton The Kerkham Family Wicket Keeping Award: Timothy Cummins 36 dismissals, 29 catches & 7 stumpings gave Tim this Award for the fourth time.
