North of Anzac Cove lies the large, flat Suvla Plain (GR344549). The flat area on the map can be identified by the
widely spaced contour lines. Thousands of British troops landed here while the ANZAC forces fought diversionary
battles at Lone Pine (GR346508) and The Nek (GR351514).

This image shows the rugged terrain behind the cliffs of the landing beaches. The most distant ridge is
Rhododendron Ridge (GR352519), which leads to the hill of Chunuk Bair (GR357517). Ridges on a map can be
identified where the contour lines are U-shaped or V-shaped, pointing from a higher elevation to a lower one.
Between ridges are valleys where the contour lines form a V-shape that points towards the high land.

On 25 April 1915, ANZAC forces landed at Gallipoli to attempt
to take contol of the Dardanelles strait. The 17 000 Australian
and New Zealand soldiers landed at Ari Burnu (now Anzac
Cove). The rugged terrain made conditions difficult for the
soldiers. It is estimated that over 8000 Australians died of
wounds and diseases in the eight months of the campaign.
