The most distant ridge is Rhododendron Ridge (GR352519), which leads to the hill of Chunuk Bair (GR357517). Ridges on a map can be identified where the contour lines are U-shaped or V-shaped, pointing from a higher elevation to a lower one. The 17 000 Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed at Ari Burnu (now Anzac Cove). The rugged terrain made conditions difficult for the soldiers.
