Pennoweth Weekly Spring Term - Week 15 Friday 6 January 2017 Website www.pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk Academy set back There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes regarding our desire to convert to an Academy. Governors went through lengthy meetings with leaders of several Academies and, after much discussion, they chose to join Truro and Penwith Academy Trust. We subsequently completed the application forms and waited patiently for the Regional Director based in Bristol and her ‘Board’ to agree. They met in December and a few days later we received a very brief email to refuse our application based upon the fact that her latest plan is to engineer our school to join schools from Camborne, Pool and Redruth. We chose TPAT for many reasons but what was particularly attractive is that they are an established organisation and partnered with Cornwall Teaching Schools and therefore, primed to support schools like ours immediately. We are looking for an immediate and established partnership and our concern is that we are at least 18 months away from joining a local organisation that would be in a position to provide adequate support for schools. At the present time we feel that our hands are tied but we will continue challenging ‘the powers that be’! We live in a crazy educational world at the moment and we are feeling the repercussions of poorly thought through political policy and, politicians who are determined to dismantle what works well and making decisions that are neither, coordinated or complimentary, to work carried out by Ofsted and the DfE. We have already challenged the decision by writing to senior civil servants, sought support from Jane Black (the education lead to Cornwall Council) and directly to George Eustace (our local MP). Rest assured, we will continue to do our very best for ALL of our children — I will keep you informed of developments.
