Thanks again! Don Scheetz From the Pastor’s Desk . . . !!!!!There is a line in Song of Myself by Walt Whitman that says, “I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.” I often feel that way about my preaching: I sound my barbaric yawp from the pulpits of the world. All of us feel that way if we have any sense of excellence. Our product never measures up, is never good enough to match our dreams. As Flaubert wrote in Madame Bovary, “Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars.” Yawp! So how do we go on? Worse yet, how do we ever point anybody to Christ when all we have to show is our own poor efforts as a Christian witness? I heard a story recently that gave me hope. Ignace Jan Paderewski, the famous composer/pianist, was to give a performance in a packed American concert hall. Among those in attendance was the anxious mother of a nine-year-old boy. He wasn’t getting on well in his piano lessons, and she thought that hearing the master would encourage him. Instead, the little guy developed a fascination for the big concert grand on the platform. While the great musician was still backstage, the boy slipped away from his mom, climbed to the stage and began to bang out his rendition of “Chopsticks.” Yawp! BALTIC PARISH UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PO Box 249 203 North Butler St. Baltic, OH 43804 330-897-6855 [email protected] Renner’s St. Paul UCC Fresno, OH Sunday School at 9:30 AM Worship at 10:30 AM Zion UCC Baltic, OH Worship at 9:00 AM Sunday School at 10:15 AM Then an interesting thing happened. As the audience laughed or hissed, Paderewski stepped from the wings. He reached around the lad and began to improvise chords, a counterpoint to the cracked kettle. The crowd cheered. Perhaps when I preach, or when you and I share a halting word of witness, or attempt to answer the sneer of a cynic, we can feel Christ embrace us and enhance the melody, turning a failure into a blessing. Perhaps we do better than we really did because we are playing God’s piano, and He is playing through, and around, and beyond us. Remember that this week, and pound those old ivories for all--no, for more--than you are worth. Do, re, me, fa, sol, la…Thee, Pastor Jim Rev.
