ROTATION VS REVOLUTION Essential Question: What is the difference between rotation and revolution? ROTATION • Earth’s rotation is the rotation of Earth around its own axis. • Earth’s Axis is an imaginary line that goes through the Earth at the North and South Poles. • The Earth is tilted at a 23.5 o angle. • The Earth Rotates from the west towards the east in a counter-clockwise direction. • Earth rotates around its axis once a day (24 hours). • Rotations causes day and night. REVOLUTION • Revolution is the movement of Earth around the Sun. The Earth orbits around the Sun. • The Earth takes 365 days or 1 year to complete one revolution. • The Sun’s gravity holds Earth in its orbit. • The Revolution around the Sun and the Tilt of the Earth is responsible for having seasons. If the Earth were not tilted, we would have the same season all year long (like at the equator). WATCH THIS VIDEO
