Wednesday, April 6th UMW Executive Meeting 1:00p CR 1:30p-Wesley Hall April Garage Sale It's spring cleaning time! Do you have items that you no longer need or want? Please consider donating them to the MUMC garage sale, which will be held during the April city-wide garage sales! Proceeds will be used toward youth camperships and Operation Christmas Child shoebox shipping expenses. You may start bringing items to the church on Sunday, April 24th. Please put them in the old youth room (east side of the lower level). Items that typically sell best include good used children's clothing and gear, toys, bikes, furniture, household items, and holiday decorations. We would also appreciate any donations of baked goods to sell! (Please bring these in Friday or Saturday.) Because adult clothing doesn't usually sell very well, we suggest that you take those in-season items to the Clothing Closet. Children's clothing will be priced according to category, so no price tags are necessary on those items. Please feel free to tag any other donated items with a suggested price. If you have larger items to donate, please contact one of the committee members (Mary Jane Fetter, Meghan Mensen, or Stephanie Stocks) before bringing them in so we can determine whether or not we will be able to sell them. Set up will begin Thursday morning, April 28th at 8 a.m. The sale will be open Friday, April 29th from 2-6 p.m. and Saturday, April 30th from 7-11 a.m. in the community room (lower level). If you are available to help, please contact a committee member or simply join us! Thank you!!! COMMITTEE REPORTS Church Council Minutes Wesley Hall March 15, 2016 6:40 p.m. Present: J anine Stellick, Ron Stellick, Br uce Nodurft, Jim DeKeyser, Ron Gearhart, Bill Scanlan, Randy Waterman, Barry Eike, Linda Gearhart, John Tyrrell, Pastor Phil, Jean Gross. Church Council met in Wesley Hall at 6:40 and was called to order by Chairperson Al Remling. The call to worship was from Psalm 22:25-26, a psalm of praise from David. Prayers and praises were lifted followed by a moment of silence and a prayer for guidance. Al shared a scripture reading from II Corinthians. We were reminded that God delivers those who suffer for His sake just as the Christians at Corinth were suffering at that time. John moved seconded, by Randy, to approve the February 16 Church Council minutes as written. Carried. Jean asked for approval for a Church Library brunch to be held after church on April 10 with all proceeds going to support the library. This was approved. Pastor Phil would like to have a church meeting some Sunday after church to explain how our new budget process will work. All the financials are being updated so that they reflect more closely the work of our church. Look for more information to come. Al passed out an inventory form that could be used as a room inventory for our building. Our insurance recommends that there be a current inventory of items in the building for insurance purposes. Anyone wishing to help with this should contact Al. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m. followed by the Lord's Prayer and singing of the Doxology. Our next meeting will be on April 19, 2016 in Wesley Hall at 6:30. Respectfully submitted, Jean Gross, Church Council Secretary Thank you for donating Lilies for the Easter worship service. ……………………… Jean Gross & family ~ in Memory of Duncan Gross Al Remling ~ in Memory of his family The 2016 Budget was presented from the Finance Committee for approval. It was approved as presented with a minor correction. Education has asked for approval of Vacation Bible School to be held July 18-22. This was approved. Randy Waterman made a motion, seconded by Ron Gearhart, retroactively to January 1, to end the 10% of giving funds sent to apportionments including those 10% of funds already set aside. Motion carried unanimously. Judy Fox ~ in Memory of Opal, Art & Bob Wilson Molly Hauser ~ in Memory of Charlie Hauser A note from Reverend Phil… Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25) Last week was truly special, a week that I will always remember. Beginning with Palm Sunday through the gospel of Mark we traveled with Jesus “on His way” to crucifixion, death, and resurrection. I would like to thank the many that worked to make this last week something amazing where all could have a significant encounter with Jesus. So now what? This Sunday we will begin a new journey with God’s people and we take a closer look at the church Jesus inspired. How are we as the church called to be the “bride” of Jesus? We will embark on a study that will take all the way into June as we look into the early church as revealed in the first nine chapters of the Book of Acts. We are calling this series “Church Under Construction” and are seeking to share in the experience of what they would have thought and felt and known as they lived the call that Jesus has given us about being His Bride, His own church. In many ways we are meeting those early church members here in our journey as well, as we are growing into a new understanding of what being a disciple is about, and what it means to be a part of Jesus’ own church. It all begins, as it should, this Sunday April 3rd at the Kingdom feast where we join together with Christ, in community, with our feet beneath the Kingdom Table. We will be sharing in communion with those who have gone before, preparing the way for those yet to come. Hope to see y’all there! Palm Sunday Resurrection Rolls VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Spring has just begun, but it’s already time to begin planning Vacation Bible School! This year’s theme is Cave Quest: Following Jesus the Light of the World! The kids are in for an adventure-filled week, but it won’t be possible without YOUR help! This year’s VBS will be July 18-22 from 9:00-11:45 a.m., and we are in need of a co-director, preschool leaders, station leaders, crew leaders, and decoration leaders. Crew leaders will help organize these kids and assist the leaders. STATION LEADERS (Adults): Students (who are grouped in crews) move through various stations that are staffed by an adult leader and feature a different Bible-learning activity. You are the “teacher” for your station. Crews are at your station for approximately 20 minutes. Stations include: Sing & Play Rock/Cave Quest Closing: This ener getic individual opens and closes the mor ning with all the kids in the sanctuary. Deep Bible Quests: This individual helps the kids exper ience the daily Bible stor y in a hands-on way. Imagination Station: This individual leads the kids thr ough science exper iments that connect to the day’s Bible story. CREW LEADERS (HS Students or adults): These individuals are assigned to a group of approximately 6 kids. They lead their crew through each station assisting the station leaders as needed. DECORATION LEADERS: Cr eative individuals with gr eat vision and ingenuity ar e needed to tur n the Nar thex and sanctuary into a cave. With approximately 75 kids attending VBS each summer, we need at least 16 crew leaders in addition to at least 6 station leaders and 2 preschool teachers to make VBS a success. We also need creative people to help decorate the church, people to man the registration table, assistants for the station leaders, and much more. Please consider how you can use your talents and gifts to benefit the children who attend this year’s VBS! New York Times’ bestselling author and international speaker Cecil (Cec) Murphey has written or co-written more than 135 books, including the runaway bestseller 90 Minutes in Heaven (with Don Piper) and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (with Dr. Ben Carson). His books have sold millions of copies, have been translated into more than 40 languages, and have brought hope and encouragement to countless people around the world. Prior to launching his career as a full-time writer and speaker, Cecil served as pastor for 14 years in Metro Atlanta, as a volunteer hospital chaplain for ten years, and was a missionary in Kenya for six. He holds bachelor’s degrees in education and religious education, as well as master’s degrees in education and theology. Cecil was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature from The Richmond Virginia Seminary for his contributions to the writing field. Cecil will be guest minister at the United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 17, at 9:00, speaking on becoming an authentic Christian. He will be facilitating the adult study following the service. Sunday evening, April 17, from 6:30-8:30 pm, Cecil Murphey pairs up with local author Mary Potter Kenyon to speak to the hearts of those who have lost a spouse. Mary’s husband David introduced her to Cecil’s book “90 Minutes in Heaven.” The very last book David held in his hands was the same author’s “Getting to Heaven.” On the day her husband died, a check from Cecil for an essay she’d written arrived in Mary’s mailbox. On the night of his wake, Mary received word she’d won a Cecil Murphey scholarship to a writer’s conference that would take place on what would have been her 34th anniversary. Six months after the pair finally connected at another conference, Cecil lost his wife of nearly sixty years, and Mary began writing him letters, sharing pieces of the book he would later write a foreword for. Cecil later performed a backyard wedding for Mary’s oldest child and his fiancé. Did God go before these two, choreographing a friendship? Will He guide us, show us the way, and put the right people in our path, if we allow it? Is he near us during those darkest hours of the soul after we lose a loved one? Cecil Murphey and Mary Potter Kenyon will share their unique story and speak about finding hope and healing in the midst of the darkness of loss. *These presentations take the place of the regularly scheduled grief support meeting-no meeting Thursday, April 21st. We have excellent leaders in each section of the choir, so if you consider yourself more of a follower than a leader, that’s O.K. with us! Small Study Groups Sundays @ 10:30a ~ Parlor - Mondays @ 10:30 ~ Library New Bible Study Proverbs Learning to Live Wisely We often look for a book that will tell us “How to…” get a job, a good loan, a good investment, buy a car, buy a house. You can become a balloon artist, an astrologer, an athlete, a golfer or a good dancer. All these books offer us wisdom-skill in one area or another. Books like these proliferate because we all need wisdom to live successfully. Improve our relationship with God. One book of the Bible-the Proverbs of Solomon-specializes in wisdom. It gives us direction and guidance that is practical, concrete, reasonable, wholesome, understandable, shrewd and fruitful. By reading and discussing it we gain skill in all areas of life. Comparing the book of Proverbs with other ancient Near Eastern wisdom literature sheds light on how the collection arose in the first place. They were used in order to instruct the sons of Kings, court officials in many lands would pull together the wisdom they had acquired in a lifetime of diplomatic service. Solomon tells us the purpose of the collection in Proverbs 1:2-6. Read those verses of the “wisdom” book and come prepared to discuss more of the book Proverbs. Please Contact Barry Eike 927.2322 Year-long Mission Mission of Hope, Cedar Rapids, Iowa is Manchester United Methodist Church’s Mission of the Month for April. Loving others unconditionally – one heart at a time. Beliefs – Vision – Future OUR BELIEFS We believe in giving people the best. So many of the people we serve have been given “the leftovers” all their lives. That’s why we offer fresh-baked cookies after each worship service, hot homemade meals at our Shelter, a clean and inviting atmosphere, and nice (and often new) clothes in our emergency closet. These are all ways we show people we care, that they have value, and that they are loved – by us and by God. We believe in giving people second chances. Just as God never gives up on us, we never give up on people and always welcome them back. We never know when the “next time” will be the time that people truly embrace change. There is always hope. We believe in loving people as they are. It doesn’t matter where they’ve have been, what they have done, or what they even continue to do, we love them anyway. Through this unconditional love, we build relationship and trust. Through relationship and trust, hearts are open to change. We believe in partnering with the local church. Without the support of the local church and the community, we cannot do this work. We believe God calls us together to love each other, serve each other, and make a difference in the lives of our brothers & sisters. OUR VISION Mission of Hope’s vision is to provide a 24/7 Christ-centered ministry offering physical, emotional, and spiritual help to former offenders and others in need. Just as our Shelter is open 24/7, we desire that the Mission be also – providing Bible studies, worship services, and prayer around the clock, day and night. As we meet people’s basic needs, God begins to change hearts. As lives are transformed, His people are discipled through a number of different resources. And as the Church uses their gifts to serve the Body, it is also taught, trained, and transformed. Mission of Hope was created to “be the Church,” offering His unconditional love, forgiveness, and direction to those who put their hope in Him. OUR FUTURE For nearly nine years, Mission of Hope has resided in a building that we don’t own. We’ve paid over $2,300/month in rent for the past several years, and we desire to own our own building. Furthermore, we would love to have a facility that would house both the Mission and the Shelter – with everything under one roof. Our facility committee continues to watch for potential sites, and we’ve toured several places over the past few years, but we continue to wait on God for His will. We also want to have some type of a business or factory, hiring those who have difficulty finding jobs and paying them a decent wage. The profits made from this business will go back to support the ministry. Reprinted from Mission of Hope website: for more information go to: http://www.missionofhopecr.org Share the Harvest is a local, seasonal food pantry that concentrates on distributing fruits and vegetables to individuals who have limited access to fresh, healthy food. This includes, elderly, disabled and people who have limited financial means. We began operation in the summer of 2013 and look forward to starting our fourth season this summer. In the previous three years we have distributed nearly 50,000 pounds of produce in our community. The produce we distribute comes from two sources – local gardeners who share the surplus from their own gardens and through our status as a member agency of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Our mission is to be the Hands and Feet of God in our community. We are guided by the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:40, “That which you do for the least of these, you do for Me.” Share the Harvest will operate this season from early July through late September from our location at The Watershed (the kayak and canoe rental business) 252 River Street. We currently operate on Thursdays – 4:00pm – 5:30pm to receive donations and from 6:00pm – 7:00 pm for the distribution. We are in need of volunteers to fill several positions: Lead Volunteer – this would be an individual willing to learn about the operation of the program and to manage the Thursday distribution in the absence of the Director. Driver – someone with a truck or van to pick up produce from the Manchester Walmart on Tuesday afternoons. This person would deliver the produce to our location on River Street and assist with putting into our refrigerator. Must be able to lift approximately 40 pounds. Driver Assistant - this person would help the driver with produce pick-up, unloading at our location and putting into refrigeration. Must be able to lift approximately 40 pounds. Sign-In Assistant/Greeter – greet our customers, help them sign in and distribute grocery bags. Sign Installer - Put up our signs at locations throughout Manchester on Thursday afternoons. Volunteers – we need 10-15 individuals each week to help with our operation. Duties include receiving produce from gardeners, sorting and re-packaging, help set up tables and bins, help our customers fill their bags with healthy food. It is not necessary to come every week, only as your schedule allows. *It is not necessary for one person to do these jobs. They can be rotated on a week-to-week schedule. The bottom line is we respect your time limitations and only ask that people dedicate whatever time they are comfortable with. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer or just to learn more about our program, contact Robin Stone, Director at 563-920-3796.
