Simple Armor: Breastplates OBJECTIVE: To build a breastplate for the Metalworker’s Guild. MATERIALS: Heavy corrugated cardboard, heavy-duty aluminum foil, glue, Stylus, blunt scissors, tape, heavy string. LENGTH OF TIME: 30 minutes PROCEDURE: 1) Cut desired shape and size of breastplate out of cardboard. 2) Cut overlay larger out of aluminum foil. 3) Lay foil on top of cardboard turning over the edges and taping them to cardboard. 4) With blunt scissors, stylus, or pencil, lightly etch desired design. 5) Place holes in the sides and top. Tie the string to the breastplate. Attach to the body by tying around the neck and the chest. 1 Simple Armor: Helmet OBJECTIVE: To build helmets for the Armorer’s Guild. MATERIALS: Ball (basketball or volleyball); cardboard for stand; petroleum jelly; Pariscraft (gauze plaster strips); water; spray grey tempera paint; brushes. LENGTH OF TIME: One hour to make; 30 minutes to paint. PROCEDURE: 1) Attach twine around the ball so you can pull it from the finished piece. 2) Fashion a 4” wide strip of cardboard to act as a stand in which you place the ball. 3) Cover the ball with petroleum jelly for easy removal. 4) Cut gauze plaster strips in 8” lengths for easy application. 5) Wet strips and coat entire shape with two applications of Pariscraft, leaving an opening for face. The rope becomes a sculptured ridge. 6) Let dry. 7) Pull twine to remove form. 8) Paint. 2
