LISTOS PARA VOLAR READY TO SOAR In Kindergarten at Puesta del Sol our learning is fun and engaging. Acquiring a new language adds an extra level of challenge. This presentation is to help facilitate the transition to Spanish Immersion Kindergarten. Over the summer you can help your student prepare to fly by working on the following skills. We have prepared a Kindergarten Readiness Kit to help you and your student over the summer prepare to be immersed in Spanish. Look for the phoenix next to any bullet for a provided resource. Materials included in Readiness Kit KINDERGARTEN READINESS KIT 2 lapices and pencil grips Caja de crayones Tijeras Packet of Spanish alphabet and numbers practice Flash cards for: HFW, Numbers and Letters in Spanish Packet of cutting practice SOCIAL What should students be able to do? Plays well with other children. Shares with others and is able to take turns. Can let an adult know if they need help. Tries to use words to solve a conflict and express their feelings. Uses the bathroom independently and can dress self without help. What can I do? Build structures and routines at home as well as daily responsibilities. Prepare students to follow directions and understand consequences. Work with your student to build problem solving skills when faced with social challenges. Play school at home and set-up a daily schedule with time for snack, lunch, recess and independent work time. Set-up play dates over the summer. Gets from one place to another using different types of movement Can hold a pencil Can cut with scissors What can I do? Limit screen time and encourage creative play. Incorporate gross motor play time, such as running, jumping and climbing. Build fine motor skills through active play with Legos, clothes pins, play dough, cutting with scissors LITERACY Materials included in Readiness Kit What should students be able to do? Names most letters of the alphabet in English and is familiar with some Spanish letter names and sounds Makes many of the letter sounds Can hold a book carefully Can write their name and write other letters Begins to identify words in their environment and tries to copy them What can I do? Build stamina for working independently by spending 5-10 uninterrupted minutes a day drawing, play writing or reading Build listening stamina by listening to books on CD without any visual input (iPad, TV screens, etc.) Refer to Technology resource list provided in Kindergarten Readiness Kit Materials included in Readiness Kit MATH What should students be able to do? Counts the number of items in a group Uses words like “all” and “some” to describe an amount of items Knows letters and numbers are different What can I do? Count objects around the house and in your community. Practice writing and representing numbers Materials included in Readiness Kit LANGUAGE What should students be able to do? Speaks clearly so other people can understand their words Is able to have a conversation Can tell a simple story in any language What can I do? Use dinner time to practice conversation skills with the entire family. Use bedtime reading to practice retelling stories. Encourage students to tell you about their drawings and create stories together.
