- 4 Keys to Success
Warm Up - You can use a calculator but make sure
your answer is in Scientific Notation.
(4.57 x 1012) + (8.2 x 108)
(3.45 x 107) - (4.89 x 105)
4.57082 x 1012
3.4011 x 107
6.5 x 10
___________

(1.678 x 10 ) (7.5 x 10 )
12
1.2585 x 1016

8 x 105
8.125 x 105

• Keys to success?
• Pass back Friday's quiz and yesterday's binder quiz. Go over
answers and recollect due to more students needing to take it
still.
• End-of-Module Test Thursday and study group after school
Wednesday until 3:30.

Comparing Numbers in Scientific Notation
Which number written in Scientific Notation is larger?
7.85 x 107
9.673 x 105
7.85 x 107 is larger because when we
look at the powers of 10 in each
number, this one has a larger
magnitude.
4
Which number written in Scientific Notation is smaller?
3.5 x 10(-2)
3.498 x 10(-2)
3.498 x 10(-2) is smaller. I know this because
they have the same power of 10, so I had to
look at the leading digits to find which one was
smaller.

In your groups, read Exercise 1 in your workbook
(pg. 63). Decide which galaxy is closer to Earth and
have ONE member of the group write your answer
on the board ("F" for Fornax Dwarf and "A" for
Andromeda I). F = 4.6 x 105 A = 2.430 x 106

In your groups, read Exercise 2 in your workbooks
(pg. 63). Decide which subatomic particle has a
longer average lifetime and have ONE member of
the group write your answer on the board ("T" for
tau lepton and "N" for neutral pion). T = 2.906 x 10 N = 8.4 x 10
