English II Pre-AP - Lesson Plans - Week of 9/8-9/12 Monday Daily Objective: The student will analyze the impact of poetic devices on a poem. How Assessed: Poetry Posttest, Block Day lesson Tuesday Wed/Thur Friday Daily Objective: The student will analyze the impact of diction, detail, imagery, syntax, and figurative language in a poem. How Assessed: Poetry post-test, Block Day lesson Daily Objective: The student will determine the tone of a poem based on the use of imagery, diction, and poetic devices. How Assessed: poetry post-test, analysis of “A Poem for the Blue Heron” Materials Needed: Peeling Back the Layers in “Root Cellar” and “A Poem for the Blue Heron” Daily Activities: 1. Do First – Read and annotate “Root Cellar” 2. With a partner, work through all of the questions about “Root Cellar.” (40 minutes) 3. Go over “Root Cellar” annotations and multiple choice. Data tracker – track their progress. 4. Independent practice – analysis and annotation of “A Poem for the Blue Heron” Daily Objective:. The student will identify and analyze the impact of poetic and sound devices in a poem. Homework: Finish analysis of “A Poem for the Blue Heron” Homework: Study – Timed Writing Tuesday, Test Wed/Thur Materials Needed: Copies of “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes, copies of Strategies for Interpreting Poetry Daily Activities: 1. Do First – Write a paragraph about how you experience the world. 2. Students read “Theme for English B” quietly to themselves 3. Guide class through strategies for interpreting poetry; model annotations while annotating “Theme for English B” Materials Needed: Uncovering Layers of Meaning in “The Witch” Homework: Homework: Daily Activities: 1. Do First – what is special about you that is your contribution to the diversity at WHS and in this classroom? 2. Students read “The Witch” quietly to themselves, looking first for examples of imagery. 3. As a group, annotate the poem for imagery. 4. Students answer questions on p. 102 and #6 (note to teacher – cut/paste #6 onto p. 102). Go over answers. 5. If time allows, analyze syntax of passage.
