EDUCATION & TRAINING MATTERS - CATHERINE MOLLOY WE ONLY GET TO SPEND OUR MONEY ONCE Remember when we used to receive pocket money each week and the choice of spending it or saving it was real? What did you do? Using the government funding to train your staff is a great way of maximising your dollar. This is still the business money, so choosing a training company that is passionate about results and making a difference in your business is important. Are you still in the same pattern, or have you learned to manage your money? When you own a business, so much time, money and effort is put into training staff etc, even if the staff don’t realise it! When a new staff member is inducted, we want them to share our passion – we place a lot of emphasis in keeping them on the right track and, of course, “time is money,” as Benjamin Franklin said. “Never spend your money before you have earned it.” – Thomas Jefferson Before a staff member leaves, my suggestion is to make sure they have put step-by-step process in place, so when the new person comes in full of enthusiasm, everything will be set out the way you want it. You have spent a fortune on the staff member who has just left, and if you don’t have your processes in place, all that knowledge has just walked out the door. Maximise the return on your effort by using government funding to keep staff updated in new skills and to teach them how to create processes that can be easily followed, which in turn helps improve the business and themselves. Time management, goal-setting, planning and taking initiative in the workplace are just a few of the units to choose from. The more the staff feel valued and take responsibility in their job, the better your staff and business will be. Did you know? The Harvard business review, said workers consider training to be as valuable as a raise. So make the most of the money you do have, and put the government funding you can receive for training to good use. And remember, you only get to spend your money once, so take the time to plan and spend it where you will reap the most reward.
