Some kids only want to eat one type of food, some kids won’t try any new foods and some kids won’t eat any foods of a particular color. Good nutrition is incredibly important for kids even though maintaining it is often difficult for their parents. Proper nutrition is essential during childhood so that a child grows to obtain a healthy height and weight, can concentrate in school and does not have any nutritional deficiencies. During the time period from birth to age 5, the human body goes through its most rapid growth. Children’s bodies are transitioning from crawling to walking and then to running and playing sports. Childhood is a time when healthy and strong bones and muscles are imperative so that they do not injure their muscles or break their bones because of a lack of nutrients. Calcium from milk, cheese and yogurt helps to strengthen the child’s bones as they grow bigger and taller. Protein from foods like eggs and peanut butter fuels the muscles so kids can run around and play without damaging muscle tissue. Many nutritional deficiencies, such as rickets and scurvy, used to be common for children to have but are now very rare. This is because we now know that proper nutrition prevents the dangerous effects of disorders caused by nutritional deficiencies. It’s important to make sure children get enough vitamins and minerals, by eating foods from all of the recommended food groups daily, especially fruits and vegetables. The cafeteria at St. Albert offers our students protein, whole wheat bread items, a variety of fruit (fresh and canned in 100% juice), vegetables and milk every day. Every week we offer 5 different groups of vegetables by color for the nutritional value: red/orange, dark green, legumes or beans, starch and an “other” category, which includes produce like cauliflower, green beans or celery. We also offer fresh veggies every day! Woman of the Year for LLS A member of our St. Albert’s family, Martha Shaker has been nominated as a 2015 candidate for Woman of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Please read her message and consider participating in the opportunity to help fight cancer! As a candidate for Woman of the Year for LLS, I have the honor and the opportunity to participate in a 10-week fundraising campaign which kicks off Thursday March 5th and concludes May 15th. The campaign focuses on raising funds for research for treatment and ultimately a cure for blood cancers. Many times this research leads to better treatment protocols for other types of cancer. I accepted this challenge, simply because, I was asked, and I wanted to make a difference. My campaign theme is one of HOPE and I have a dedicated committee working with me, teamHOPE! Progress is being made. The 5 year survival rate for many blood cancers has quadrupled since the 1960’s. Someday we will have a cure. With your help, someday is today. Our St. Albert’s community is familiar with supporting these types of efforts as we annually participate in our “Cookies for Caroline” to commemorate and honor one of our own, Caroline Carter, daughter of Karen and Ed Carter, who lost her battle with cancer. I’d like to invite you to a series of family-friendly activities to continue to give you the opportunity to participate in our quest for a cure.
