SUBJUNCTIVE
 Use the subjunctive to express:
 emotion,
 doubt,
 opinion,
 point of view, and
 indirect commands (polite suggestions).
USING THE SUBJUNCTIVE
 In general, the word que usually appears before the
subjunctive, and joins the main and dependent
clauses.
Main Clause (indicative) + que + Dependent Clause (subjunctive)
INDICATIVE V. SUBJUNCTIVE MOODS
 The main clause uses the main verb expressing
emotion, doubt, etc., in the indicative.

Es importante que…
Es is our main verb (ser) and it is in the indicative mood. At this
point in time, we are most familiar with the indicative mood.
 We could also use phrases like No creo que… and No pienso que…
because they express doubt.

INDICATIVE V. SUBJUNCTIVE MOODS
 The dependent clause (everything after the que)
uses the verb in the subjunctive.

Es importante que respetemos al medio ambiente.
FORMING THE SUBJUNCTIVE
 To form the subjunctive:
 start with the yo form of the present indicative
 drop the o
 add the appropriate endings
 Verbs in –ar and –er with stem changes in the
present undergo the same stem changes in the
present subjunctive.

 Do you remember when you learned to tell someone
not to do something using the negative command
form?



¡No hables mucho!
¡No hable mucho!
¡No hablemos mucho!

 The same endings are used when you want to express
your opinion or point of view using the
subjunctive.

Es importante que uses el transporte público.

It’s important (to me) that you use public transportation.

 Remember that you have to change the spelling for
some verbs to keep the pronunciation the same.





 Don’t forget that verbs that end in –uir, like
contribuir, include a y in their subjunctive form:
