Start by cutting the index card into a square a couple inches shorter than the craft stick. 2. Decorate the card like a bee. 3. When decorated, flip it over so it’s face-down on the table. Cut a long, thin strip of sticky foam and use it like tape to attach the card to the stick. (The foam is also a spacer and tha is why you don’t just use tape to attach the card to the stick.) 4. Cut four squares of the craft foam, sized so they fit over the end of the craft stick. Tape two squares onto both ends of the craft stick. 5. Tie the yarn onto one side of the craft stick. 6. Stretch the rubber band over the craft stick, making sure it’s not twisted. We tested several, and discovered that the rubber band needs to be really tight around the stick. It’s also important that the rubber band is wider than it is thick. 7. Swing the device overhead in a circle rapidly to create the buzzing noise. You can actually fly this kite so high in the sky that you can’t see it any longer (100 feet, easily). But if you give the kids 6 feet of string they can run with it and it flies when there is no breeze. Directions: 1. Fold a sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" paper in half to 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". 2. Fold again along the diagonal line A in Fig.2. This diagonal line can be determined by making a mark at the top 1/2 inch from the fold and a mark at the bottom 3 in. from the fold and drawing a line between these marks. 3. Fold back one side forming kite shape in Fig.3 and place tape firmly along fold line AB.(No stick is needed here because the fold stiffens the paper and acts like a spine.) 4. Place bar-b-que stick from point C to D and tape it down firmly. 5. Cut off 6 to 10 feet of plastic ribbon and tape it to the bottom of the kite at B. 6. Flip kite over onto its back and fold the front flap back and forth until it stands straight up.(Otherwise it acts like a rudder and the kite spins around in circles.) 7. Punch a hole in the flap at E, about 1/3 down from the top point A. This hole can be reinforced with an additional piece of tape. 8. Tie one end of the string to the hole and wind the other end onto the cardboard string winder. Material list: • 8 1/2" x 11" multipurpose printing paper. • 8" bamboo bar-b-que shishkabab stick or plastic drinking • 5 foot piece of florescent surveyor's flagging plastic tape. Available at any hardware store; or a plastic bag cut in a 1" wide spiral all around will also make a great tail. • Tape- clear (maksing will work in a pinch) • 6 to 10 feet of kite string (you can get a ball of light weight crochet string such as Knit-Cro-Sheen at craft or thrift stores) • 1"x 3" cardboard (to wind the string) • Scissors. • Hole punch. (optional)
