Aboriginal Perspectives on Mainstream ADR
What does it look like for Aboriginal people to participate in mainstream ADR programs?
What are the opportunities for them to feel supported, to know that they will be treated
fairly and with respect? The speakers will share their stories and perspectives on resolving
conflict in ways that are holistic and culturally relevant.
Gayle Desmeules, M.A., Q.Med is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, and her family
has a history of attending Indian Residential School. Gayle is working collaboratively with
traditional Elders, public and private sector partners in support of the continued
development of Native Counselling Services of Alberta Peacemaking Mediation Certificate
Training, using traditional worldview as the pedagogy. Gayle is a Licensed Trainer for the
Institute for Restorative Practices, and a Mediator.
Rick Lightning, Elder, Ermineskin Cree First Nation, Mediator
A mental health therapist and counsellor for over 25 years, Rick offers facilitation, mediation
and negotiation services and cross cultural training workshops to First Nations across
Canada. Rick is a recognized expert on indigenous issues specifically negotiating with
governments on the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Building stakeholder capacity: The Municipal Example.
Moderator: Jill Mason, Executive Director, Alberta Surface Rights and Land Compensation Board
This session will provide an overview of the key components and strategies that Alberta
Municipal Affairs took to build the capacity of municipalities to deal with conflict
constructively and work together collaboratively. The session will focus on how to build
awareness and champions with your stakeholders and to take a strategic approach to
building the individual and organizational capacity to deal with conflict. We will also touch
on how to build a structure or program that will support capacity building and how to get
buy in from internal and external stakeholders.
