New Rock First…99X 2004 Roadie Manual New ROCK 99X The 99X Listener Experience We Promise To: 1. separate you from the crowd – We promise to keep you ahead of the curve musically and with trends in pop culture (TV, Movies, Technology, etc…) 99X is the trend setting and trend reporting radio station in Atlanta. 2. rock you – We promise to be the station you turn to for an adrenaline injection. Emphasize the “ROCK” in New Rock 99X. We reinforce this promise with music that moves, production that moves faster, tight board work, tighter breaks, and an overall station attitude that reflects that 99X is Atlanta’s ROCK Station. 3. surprise you – We promise to include a sense of danger and the unexpected in everything we do. You will constantly be surprised (not synonymous with offended) with the music we play, what we say, the events we sponsor and produce, the contests you hear on the air and our appearance on the street. Listening to 99X will be a “What are they going to do/say next” experience. 4. not b.s. you – We promise to be real people. We will leave it to other stations to be contrived and cheesy. 5. make you part of our community – We promise that you will be accepted into the 99X community. We will do the little things like answer the request lines and respond to e-mails to win friends one at a time. We will take “I Am 99X” to the next level with our increased presence on the streets. We will be knowledgeable of relevant local events, tying localism back into our on-air presentation. We will take credit for regular charitable contributions to Atlanta non-profits from the I Am 99X Foundation. 6. engage you – We promise compelling radio 15 minutes at a time. On the air and on the street, we will be interactive. 99X is the only rock station in Atlanta that is fully staffed and live 24/7. We will make that obvious. On air, we will be timely and relevant, we will give entertaining reasons to listen or listen longer. Great teases, hot phone calls, funny stories, being real and honest, painting pictures around promotions and giveaways…these are the ingredients for a compelling 15 minutes of radio. 7. make you laugh – ‘nuff said Welcome to the 99X Roadies team. We are glad to have you with us and are dedicated to ensure that your experience with us is beneficial and rewarding. Make the most of your time with WNNX. For most of our listeners, it is the only contact they will ever have with WNNX. Therefore, it is EXTREMELY important that we make an excellent impression each and every time we are seen. Wearing clean station apparel and looking sharp (i.e. shaving, combing hair, etc.) are a MUST! Programming and marketing spend countless hours trying to make our on-air product the best in the marketplace, and it is our job to see that this philosophy is carried out “on the street” as well. Appearance: As a WNNX representative attending any station-sponsored event, please look your best. Clean station logo apparel, pants (or shorts depending on the weather), and comfortable shoes. Our events are VERY active and normally take place outdoors. It is your responsibility to monitor the weather prior to the event and be prepared. Demeanor: Remember, you are the ambassador for the station. Listeners and clients will judge us by our actions. Always be at your best during station events. There are some basic do’s and don’ts for station events. They are as follows: Do: • Listen and learn about the station, personalities, programming, Atlanta nightlife, etc. Rest assured, people will ask you or make comments about the station. You need to know how to respond to their inquiries. • Interact with the public. People want to feel appreciated so thank them for coming by our location. You may be the only contact our listeners have with the station, so remember to stay positive, up beat, and attentive. • BE ON TIME!! Being late affects not only that one remote in particular, but also affects the future business and relationships with the client/advertiser. In addition, if you CAN NOT attend an event that you have signed up for you MUST notify us at least 48 hours in advance. (An emergency situation is the only exception). Do NOT: • Respond negatively in anyway to people’s comments. If someone doesn’t like something they have heard and they voice their opinion to you, just smile and give them a kind word. Remember, any person may have an Arbitron diary. • EAT DURING STATION REMOTES!! There is nothing more unprofessional than seeing someone stuffing their face. Eat before you get there. Our remotes are not that long…you WILL survive. You may have a drink, but please keep it out of site. (On the rare occasion that there is a remote longer than 3 hours, you may organize break times with a co-worker at the event). • DRINK ALCOHOL ON REMOTES!!! • Smoke at events- All day events are an exception. You may take short breaks to smoke, but you must smoke away or out of sight line of the crowd/listeners. • Make any personal phone calls! Period. (Unless there is a dire emergency.) It goes without saying that if you are on the phone, you are not doing your job. • Leave the event area unattended. II. WHAT WE EXPECT? • Uniquness: We appreciate your individuality and encourage you to express yourself. Feel free to mutilate your t-shirts to fit your own image, color your hair, tattoo and/or pierce yourself (if you feel so inclined). However, this is a business and we also expect you to be well groomed, always in 99X logo gear, and tasteful. • Attitude: Attitude starts before you get to the station. If you’ve had a bad day, check the tude at the door. We want good vibes and energy. • Safety: Always be aware of your surroundings at all times. If something doesn’t look or feel right, notify a 99X staff member immediately. If you feel uncomfortable for any reason please let us know. We can only fix things that we are aware of. This is a place to learn and have fun, not to be uneasy. • Transportation: Please be at least 30 minutes early to your event. If you are scheduled to be at the station at 4pm for a gig, be there at 3:30pm. When you arrive at the station, call the 99X staff member you are working with on their cell phone (if during non-business hours) or have John Brown page them (if during business hours 8a-5p M-F). Lewis Alston 404-725-5175 Chris Phurrough 404-725-5712 Mike Kelley 404-725-5180 Matt Courtoy 678-525-2695 • Parking: Park in visitor parking spots—ONLY!! • Questions: You hear this all the time, but we mean it. NO question is dumb. Please ask questions….we demand it. This is your opportunity to learn about radio. Make the most of it. If you are asked a question by a listener that you don’t know the answer to…. find it. Don’t say, “I don’t know,” say “Let me find out for you.” • Communication: We understand that you have a life outside of the 99X Roadies. We ask that you give us the courtesy of staying in touch on a biweekly basis. You can simply drop Lewis an e-mail ([email protected]) or call him at (404) 725-5175 cell or (404) 497-4811 wk. Check the 99X and Roadie web sites on a regular basis to stay in touch with what is happening. www.99xinterns.com/schedule The first time you log onto the website, enter your first name and last initial then the password is roadie. Please change your password during this initial log on. • • • • III. Active status: We require that you work at least 2 events a month to stay on active status. Freeloader applications: Always ask attendees if they are 99X Freeloaders. If not, encourage them to sign up either by filling out an application onsite or going to 99X.com. Stay up to date on what the Freeloader offers are and what the benefits of being a 99X Freeloader are. On-site: Help the 99X remote tech banner and set-up. This includes setting up the tent, PA, table, 99X goodies etc. Be aware of client logos and property. Don’t banner over the clients/sponsor logo, don’t put tape on a $50,000 car, etc. 99X gear is FREE to listeners--- that should say it all. However, we pay for it. That means you have a limited amount with you at events to divvy out to attendees/listeners. Try to be creative, political, and nice when trying to figure out how to give out one tshirt to the 50 people that want it. You will hear ALL sorts of stories to get FREE stuff. Just remember to be nice and fair. Leave an event the way you found it. Clean up after yourself, throw away trash, and ensure all station equipment is packed up (and neatly stored in the vehicle). Friends: Your friends are more than welcome to attend our events, but don’t forget you are there to do a job. Keep the personal conversations short and sweet. Heck, if they have that much time to spend at your event, sign em’ up to be a Roadie. TICKET REQUESTS One of the perks of working with a radio station is the ability to receive tickets and CDs at no charge. This is a privilege and should not be taken advantage of. Ask Shawnessy or Mike for any ticket or CD requests. Remember this is a request, not a guarantee. IV. WHAT WE WILL NOT TOLERATE: • Stealing • Bashing other radio stations • Mean people or being disrespectful to others • Bad attitudes • Drinking, eating, or smoking at an event • Weapons • Violence • Tardiness • Not being a Freeloader IV.
