COURSE TITLE: Spanish 2
INSTRUCTOR Erin Chmielewski

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will become proficient in Spanish 2 by learning about different Spanish speaking countries
(and States) and by continuing their knowledge of their Spanish 1 base.

LEARNING OUTCOMES/COURSE OBJECTIVES
a. Students will be proficient in the NYS Standards for LOTE (Languages Other Than English):

v. Culture
b. Students will be proficient in the following vocabulary topics:
i. Friends & Family, Professions, Towns & Cities, Body
c. Students will be proficient in the following grammar topics;
i. Past Tense, Imperfect, Present Progressive, Subjunctive and Future
ii. Commands: affirmative & negative formal, direct & indirect object pronouns
iii. Past Participles: with adjectives

COURSE SCHEDULES/ASSIGNMENTS
We will review Spanish 1 material and then be going over Spanish 2 the topics in order in the textbook:
Chapters 1-5. Students will do any homework in packet form.
 México D.F. (México): Friends & Family: celebrations & preparations, parts of the house,
household chores, family members, travel
o Grammar: nouns, adjectives, gustar, Present Tense: Regular & Stem-Changing verbs,
Irregular Verbs, Reflexive Pronouns
 Cuzco (Perú): Professions: Work-related verbs, parts of the house, furniture, chores
o Grammar: Indirect objects & pronouns, Dar, Decir, Saber & Conocer, ser, prepositions,
ser vs estar, expressions with infinitives, Past Tense: Regular verbs, hacer, and Ir,
Subjunctive
 Santo Domingo (República Dominicana): Towns & Cities: names of stores, places around town,
places in the city, ordinal numbers.
o Grammar: impersonal se and passive se, Past Tense: -car, -gar, zar verbs, conocer, andar,
tener, venir, dar, ver, Formal Commands, Irregular Formal Commands, Commands with
pronouns, object and reflexive pronouns with commands, Imperfect
 Miami (Florida): Maintaining form, competitions, emotions, body parts, injuries, illnesses,
treatments & advice.


o Grammar: Irregular Past Tense: ponerse, decir, ser, & estar, stem-chancing –ir verbs,
caerse, verbs with reflexive pronouns and direct objects, past participles used as
adjectives, use of articles with body parts, Future Tense
San José (Costa Rica): Day to Day: Prepping for work/school, interests, hobbies,
o Grammar: Preterite: poder & traer, verbs w/reflexive pronouns, possessive pronouns, hace
w. time expressions, pero & sino
METHODS OF EVALUATION AND GRADING







Tests & Quizzes: 60%: Quizzes will be broken up by section (grammar or vocabulary) and are
short answer format. Tests are longer and count twice. They include listening, reading
comprehension and a written section.
Homework: 10%
o Homework is on my website on a packet. Students are to write answers in their
notebooks. Half way through the year, the only homework will be to memorize material.
There will be no grade given for that.
o Homework one day late: partial credit
o Homework over one day late: zero
o Long-term assignments (over 1 week) will have grading policies determined by individual
Teacher
Classwork: 10%: Completion of classwork is necessary. This will turn into 20% half way through the
year when we no longer have homework.
Participation: 20%: Daily participation (Speaking in the target language [while working with a
partner, giving answers, etc], coming to class prepared and over all behavior).
Averages are determined by the percentages above.
Extra Credit is given on EVERY QUIZ AND TEST. No other extra credit assignments will be
given. Corrections of quizzes and tests are available for EVERY QUIZ AND TEST during 10th
period.
Students must pass the course to earn their LOTE credit for graduation requirements.
