“Plant The Seeds & Grow With Us”
We have continued to plant seeds over this last year and I am
delighted to announce a new club forming in Old Trails District.
They have filed their probation application and hopefully they
will be issued a Charter at the WVGC 2017 Convention.
I attended 8 District Meetings this fall. Each District meeting is a little different, but
all have one common interest – to promote WVGC and promote the love of
gardening. Vivian Shomo, Ways & Means Chairman and I travelled during the
beautiful fall season and enjoyed different landscapes around our state. Thank you
District Directors for your work to make your District a success. There were also 3
more Blue Star Memorial Marker dedications this year. We now have 82 Markers
in WV.
I attended the fall NGC Board meeting in Portland, Maine in September, at which
time Brenda Moore was nominated for third Vice President of NGC. Brenda is Past
President of WVGC, authored the NGC children’s book, The Frightened Frog,
along with Jean Ohlmann, which has sold over 7500 copies. She has served NGC as
the Membership Committee Chairman, The Frightened Frog Chairman, and serves
on the Future Planning Committee. Brenda will be installed at the 2017 National
Garden Clubs Convention in Richmond, VA, May 16-21. I hope we can get a
number of WVGC members to travel to Richmond, to support Brenda. Then in
2023, she will be installed as President of NGC at the NGC 2023 Convention being
planned here in West Virginia. How proud we are of you Brenda!
WVGC, Inc. is hosting the South Atlantic Region Garden Clubs 2017 Convention at
the Greenbrier, March 26-28. Each of the Districts will be helping with this
Convention either with table decorations, silent auction items, pages, door prizes
and many other jobs. Registration form is in this Garden News. I hope as many as
possible can attend and help WVGC as hostesses to North Carolina, South Carolina,
Virginia and Kentucky. Jerry Shriver, Chairman, Martha Hilton, Co-Chairman and
Emily Shirey, Registrar and Treasurer welcome members to our “Southern Charm
& Hospitality” Convention.
Our WVGC 2017 Convention follows on March 28-30, at the Greenbrier.
Appalachian District is Hostess with Brenda Moore, Chairman, Darlene Newell, CoChairman and Gayle Swank, Registrar. There are workshops planned, message from
SAR Director, Sarah Ann Parler, and the Installation of Carolyn McCafferty as
WVGC President by Sandra Robinson . Room rates for standard room for 2 are
$207 a night including all taxes. Registration in this Garden News. I hope as many
of you as possible will make plans to attend the 87 Annual Convention:

Blue Star Markers
On a cool crisp day on November 4,
2016, the Monongahela Cheat District
dedicated a large Blue Star Memorial
Marker at entrance of The Grafton
National Cemetery on Walnut
Street. The beautiful national cemetery
which is near the banks of the Tygart
Valley River was opened in 1868 has
more than 2,100 interments including
1,252 Union soldiers. Six hundred
thirteen Civil War soldiers are buried as
Sadie Brash, State Blue Star Memorial Chairman and
Judy Guye, WVGC State President admire the newly unknowns and their graves are identified
dedicated Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Grafton
with six-inch square markers. There are
National Cemetery
burials there from every conflict from the
Civil War to Vietnam, and currently the cemetery does not have room for new burials
on this three acre site.
Participating in the impressive dedication was Rebecca Davis who welcomed those in
attendance and also unveiled the beautiful marker. The Taylor County Color Guard
presented the colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Donald Davis, Vice
Commander of American Legion 2nd District, and the "National Anthem", and " God
Bless America" were led by Gwen Kohut, Monongahela Cheat Assistant District
Director. LaDonne Wetzel, Monogahela Cheat
District Director introduced guest and
officials. Guest speakers were: Judy Guye,
WVGC State President who presented some
remarks about the Blue Star Dedication, Sadie
Brash, Blue Star State Chairman,
who presented the "History of the Blue Star
Memorial Marker" Jan Woodward, Mount
Vernon Club, "History of the Grafton National
Cemetery", Velma Reeves, Monogahela Cheat
District, Secretary "Dedication of
Marker", Keith Barnes, Director of National
Cemetery, "Acceptance of Marker", and Ronald
Ford gave the Benediction. Taps were played by

Dedication of Blue Star Markers from 2007-2016
The "shiniest stars" of West Virginia Garden Clubs are the Blue Star Markers that
have been dedicated all across our state as a tribute to the Armed Forces that have
defended the United States of America. It is such an honor for West Virginia Garden
Clubs to participate in this program through National Garden Clubs, Inc. Our very
first marker was dedicated on March 27, 1970 by Old Trail at the Veterans Memorial
Park, Rt. 22 near Weirton. Currently, West Virginia Garden Clubs have dedicated 82
markers across our great state. We know all West Virginia Garden Club members
love to garden, but dedicating a Blue Star Marker lets our armed service members
know that we care about their service to our country.
The West Virginia Garden Club website has been updated starting with number forty
-three. Please check the list of dedicated markers starting with number 43, February
2, 2007, and ending with number 82, November 4, 2016 to make sure that all of the
information is accurate. If there are any additions or corrections to the list, please
submit the information to Sadie Brash, Blue Star Memorial Chairman,

BIRDS Betty Gorrie CHIMNEY SWIFT
I hope many of you were able to catch the migration of the
Chimney Swifts as they were on their way to Peru. They will,
for the most part, be out of North Carolina by the second
week of October. The “Swift” is a very small bird, a “cigar” shaped slender
body with very long, narrow and curved wings. When the bird lands, it can’t
perch – it clings to vertical walls inside chimneys or in hollow trees or
caves. This little bird spends its life in the air, eating and drinking. It is a
sight to behold watching them come in at dusk to roost in an old chimney or
smoke stack. You can see them for miles coming to form a large, black
funnel shape over the opening and will circle in this funnel until one flies in
and then the black funnel starts to disappear into the chimney. If you are
lucky, you may still see them at dusk in a chimney near you.
This article was taken from “Key Notes” SAR October edition

South Atlantic Region Convention Activities Sunday, March 26, 2017
Come early on Sunday to see the former U.S. Government Relocation Facility known
as The Bunker, a secret place completed in 1961 by the United States to house all of
our Congress underground along with their families in the event of an attack on
Washington D.C. Exposed by a Washington Post reporter on May 31, 1992, The
Bunker is now open to the public but hours have to be arranged ahead of time since
the spaces fill up fast. Make your appointment when you reserve your room.
Experience a guided tour of the famous Greenbrier kitchen. Make reservations with
your registration. This is limited to the first 25 reservations. A Home Tour of the
Greenbrier Lodge and several exclusive Sporting Club homes will be available from
2:00pm – 4:00pm. Make reservations with registration. The spring bulbs and shrubs
should be making an appearance on the grounds which are known for their vast tulip
plantings. Don’t forget to check out the Spa or Casino and the beautiful shops and
restaurants that have been added to the Casino area which are only available to guests
at The Greenbrier. Make time for the hotel tea at 4:15 pm each afternoon.
Sunday’s banquet features our SAR Director Sarah Ann Parlor and will honor SAR
Life Members. During dinner we will be treated to one of the most innovative and

The official opening of the convention will be at 9:00 am in the Theater. The
Awards Luncheon will be at 12:00 pm. We will see our state presidents receive
awards for their clubs. At 3:00 pm there will be a workshop entitled “Windowsill
Art”. Nancy Ross Hugo will create one-of-a-kind natural arrangements to celebrate
the seasons. Almost everyone does it, puts a little something on the windowsill.
Nancy will create arrangements through photos in a power point
demonstration, showing this simple art form can hone arranging skills, stretch
creative muscles, and provide connections to the changing seasons. She shares
dozens of her creations and which techniques, containers and materials best facilitate
the process.
Monday’s banquet features our National Garden Club President, Sandy Robinson,
from Kentucky, as our Speaker. She and our SAR Director, Sarah Ann Parler, are
looking forward to meeting you personally at the reception following the banquet.
Tuesday, March 28, 2017
The Design Breakfast will feature The Greenbrier’s own floral arranger, John
Gillespie, who will give us tips and ideas for creating the spectacular displays at this
premiere resort. Following his presentation , the official SAR Convention will close,
but you are invited to stay Wednesday and Thursday for the West Virginia Garden
Club Convention at the same special rates given our convention.
