Khan Academy
As a couple of the set are not able to complete the prep tonight, and I have left it rather late
to set any, I’m just going to ask you to work with www.khanacademy.org
If you do not already have a gmail or googlemail account, you need to create one by visiting
www.google.co.uk and then clicking on the gmail link at the top. You then need to create a
new gmail account. I would suggest you might just prefix your school username with
beacon, thus getting, for example, [email protected] . You’ll never actually need
to use the account for email; it is just something that you need to use to login to the
khanacademy site.
Before creating an account, you should check with your parents, as you will need to tell a
white lie and claim that you are over 16 (or 13?). Explain that it is merely so you can login to
khanacademy. If your parents are not happy with this, please ask them to contact me so we
can look at alternatives.
Now visit www.khanacademy.org and log in.
Try visiting….
http://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/multiplication-division/v/multiplication-6-multiple-digit-numbers which reviews what we were looking at today. Try hitting the
practice this concept.
There are actually a number of different videos on multiplication.
Also, try searching for round whole numbers, which is something we will touch upon soon.
It would be very advantageous if those who were not in 6F last year could just have a
browse around the site and get the idea of how it all it.
Finally, if you want to demonstrate that you really understand long multiplication, you could
answer the following questions.

How many seconds are there in a leap year? Start by working out how many
hours, then how many minutes, then how many seconds.
How many lunches are served at school each year, considering there are 468
pupils, 42 teachers and we go to school for 182 day a year (roughly)?
Calculate 464 in two different ways. Is it easier to calculate 462 and then square
it, or to calculate 462, and then multiply it by 46, and then by 46 again?
