Competitive Grant Received ■ Page 6–7 Employee Recognition ■ Page 8–9 Gifts/Memorials ■ very week Pastor Alvera or Pastor Denise will gather us together for Chapel services and Bible study. Sometimes visiting Pastors and choirs will join us, making a good time even better. There is always music, thanks to Nancy and Audrey, Diane and Eileen. We like songs with power and joyful refrains: This Little Light of Mine – I’m Gonna’ Let it Shine! He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands! How Great Thou Art! Jesus Loves Me! We always thank God for our time together when we pray: For the world For the Church For loved ones, neighbors and friends. We share Bible verses and stories that teach and inspire: We like those stories of Moses leading his people out of bondage in Egypt. At the end of the journey, he discovered that the Lord had led him out of bondage as well. Verses in Isaiah remind us that the Lord’s blessing will shine on His People as they help the poor and homeless, the lost and forsaken. A young boy with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish was willing to share; and so he helped Jesus to feed thousands in a deserted place far from town. Long ago someone said: “God helps those who help themselves.” If we could remember who that was, we’d like to invite them to our Bible study – to hear about Moses, Isaiah and Jesus. We help ourselves whenever we help others. —Pastor Don Wukotich Page 10–11 Memorials Address Change/ Correction Form ■ Page 12 Thrivent Choice Dollars ECHOES OF MERCY ■ FALL 2014 1 Honor Roll Eugene W. Stewardship-We practice responsible stewardship of resources available to us and strive for the highest standards of accountability. Ethical Behavior-Luther Home of Mercy is compassionate, caring and loving while providing services based on professional and ethical standards. Integrity-LHM is committed to carrying out our professional responsibilities in a manner consistent with our training and experience. Diversity-We recognize and respect the uniqueness of every individual-resident, client, staff and visitors to our programs. 2 ECHOES OF MERCY ■ FALL 2014 End-of-Life Arrangements F or the greatest majority of individuals living at Luther Home of Mercy, this will be their home for the remainder of their lives. Their length of residency ranges from just a few years to as many as 70 years. Many of our residents have limited contact with family members, or in some cases, they have no immediate surviving family. Like other programs, Luther Home has individuals who have very limited resources that barely meet basic personal needs. Some of our residents may not have adequate funds for funeral/burial expenses. As we all know, costs have increased over the years, and an insurance policy purchased many years ago does not adequately cover the cost of a funeral today. Luther Home has made a strong effort to respect the rights of all people living at the Home, both during their lifetime and at the time of their death. To meet the needs of those residents needing extra funds for end of life expenses, a Burial Fund has been established. If you would like to contribute to this fund in any amount, simply enter “Burial Fund” in the memo portion of your check. Bridge Walk he Lutheran Men In Mission of Northwest Ohio once TBridge. again sponsored a Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Walking the five mile span from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City, about 20 walkers from Northwest Ohio raised money for Luther Home of Mercy and Filling Home. Thanks to the walkers and sponsors for another successful holiday effort! Jonah, Pastor Don, Dutch, Dick, Dave, and Elijah completed the five mile trek across the bridge. B Fishing Day at Rockwell Springs in Castalia was fun for Jim & Nino (top) and Joe & Ben! Adopt A Resident! elieve it or not, we are thinking about Christmas already! Generous individuals and groups have “adopted” our residents and clients for many years, and we are offering the opportunity again this year. Gift ideas and sizes will be provided for each person adopted. You simply purchase whatever gifts you choose from the list provided, and bring your purchases to our main campus in Williston a few weeks before Christmas. This is a great way for you to brighten the holidays for those in our care. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact Karen Schanke at 419-972-4354 or email kschank@ lutherhome.org. ECHOES OF MERCY ■ FALL 2014 3 Volunteers Make a Difference! I n response to the National ELCA “God’s Work, Our Hands” on Sunday, September 7, approximately 60 volunteers arrived on campus ready to lead worship, paint, wash windows, play bingo, stain a deck, or pick up limbs and rake in the park area. Members of area Lutheran churches…Messiah, Toledo; St. John, Williston; St. Peter, Blackberry; and St. Luke, Curtice joined forces to brighten our campus. Later in the month, members of 4 ECHOES OF MERCY ■ FALL 2014 St. John, Findlay; St. Luke, North Baltimore; and Our Savior, Kenton brought items they collected from our Needs List and members of Trinity, Delta helped to renovate one of our outreach homes. We truly appreciate the willingness of everyone who made such a difference by participating in this Day of Service at Luther Home! Golf Outings A Success!! onderful weather, beautiful golf courses, and enthusiastic golfers combined to make both the Four Lutheran Agency Golf Outing on July 11 and the Luther Home of Mercy Golf Scramble on August 15 great events! Competitive Grant Received A Competitive Funding Grant from the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca County Joint Solid Waste Management District has been received by Luther Home of Mercy. The grant for $8218.00 will be used to purchase eight sets of outdoor tables and chairs made of 90% recycled plastic, which will be distributed on campus. Since 1995, she has worked the day shift in Cottage 10 and has a special place in her heart for all the residents that she cares for. Employee Recognition Kim Diebert worked in the kitchen when she first came to Luther Home in May 1984. After 11 years there, she transferred to Direct Care Staff and worked in Cottages 2 & 9. Since 2001, she has been in the On-Call Office working various shifts. She especially enjoys getting to know all the staff members and residents. Starting in April 1984, Danielle Riegel has worked in several departments on campus including Housekeeping and Direct Care. She has worked in the Laundry Department for the past 12 years, and enjoys the challenge of keeping up with the mounds of laundry that arrive each day. Rita Torres has worked in the Dietary Department since November 1984. Her hours have varied over the years and many changes have occurred in the last 30 years. The staff and residents are like a second family to her and she enjoys cooking for the residents and making sure that they have nutritious food at every meal. Roberta Wodarski has worked third shift as a Direct Care Staff since October 1984. Over the years, she has worked in many cottages and has seen many changes in programming and activities that the residents are involved in. She loves working with the residents and enjoys taking care of them. In February 1989, Janet Brown came to work at Luther Home for what she thought was a short time, but after 25 years, she is still here working as a Direct Care Staff. She has worked all three shifts in many of the cottages on campus and currently works the day shift in Cottage 12. The residents are like family to her and she enjoys caring for them. In September, 1989, Sharon Dean worked as a Direct Care Staff for eleven years before accepting a position in the Recreation Department with the Focus Program. She has served in various Day Programming capacities and now works at Genesis Community Center in Northwood. She gets so much love from the residents every day which makes her job so satisfying. Pat Everhardt has worked in the Bookkeeping Department for 25 years and enjoys meeting the financial needs of the residents and staff. Computers have made her job much easier to keep track of finances and she has seen an increase in her workload with the addition of the outreach program. Pam Gilbert started working as a Direct Care Staff in June 1989. She has worked in several cottages on campus during the last 25 years and has worked second shift in Cottage 12 since it opened in 1998. She has cared for many of the same residents for many years and they have become an extension of her own family. She enjoys seeing her second family every day and doing special things for them. Working as a Social Worker at Luther Home for 25 years has been a good experience for Tony Lompis. He enjoys working with not only the residents, but their families as well. Meeting the program and medical needs of the residents is a challenge at times, but appreciates the opportunity to learn and grow in both his professional and personal life. Ronda Ray cherishes the smiling faces that greet her when she arrives at work each day. She has worked as a Direct Care Staff for 25 years and has worked in several cottages. Currently she works second shift in Cottage 3 and enjoys the hugs that are freely given by the residents. In September 1994, Rachel Adame started working in the Dietary Department and worked there for six years before becoming a Direct Care Staff for thirteen years. In May 2013, she transferred to the Housekeeping Department and enjoys the activity and challenges of keeping the cottages clean for the residents. Sharon Boyer has worked as an LPN for the past twenty years. She has worked in many cottages and cared for many residents. She now works on a casual basis, but still thoroughly enjoys taking care of the medical needs of the residents. Sue (Simon) Bauroth has worked in the Dietary Department since October 1994 and loves her job and cooking for the residents. She gets much joy when the smiles on their faces indicate that they have enjoyed the meals that day. ! s n o i t a l u t a r g n Co ECHOES OF MERCY ■ FALL 2014 7 Gifts ANONYMOUS Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anson Baldwinsville, NY Mr. and Mrs. Duane Arndt Elmore, OH Augsburg Lutheran Church Toledo, OH Mr. Len Bacon Toledo, OH Mr Ralph Baker Millbury, OH Mr. Jeffrey Barnes Perrysburg, OH Mr. and Mrs. Ray F.
