Facilitated session for KS1 pupils
10.30 - 12.00 or 1.00 - 2.30
£70 per class
Led by an experienced freelance artist this session will explore the multi-faceted brilliance of Leonardo da
Vinci and is a useful introduction to the artist, his many interests, accomplishments and historical context.
Through drawing, Leonardo attempted to record and to understand the world around him. He maintained
that an image transmitted knowledge more accurately and concisely that any words. There are almost 600
drawings by Leonardo da Vinci in the Royal Collection and they have been described as the richest, most
wide-ranging, technically brilliant and most endlessly fascinating of any artist.
Leonardo da Vinci was known as a painter but more than anything he loved to learn about the world around
him through drawing. This session will discover the value of looking and drawing by exploring what
materials Leonardo da Vinci used and learning how these materials helped him to capture movement as
well as light and shadow. A close look at the ten drawings in the exhibition will reveal the themes that
interested Leonardo such as movement, nature, weather and mechanics. Following the exhibition tour a
practical session will give an opportunity to try out one of Leonardo’s techniques for drawing to show the
similarities and differences in drawing today.
This session is an ideal starting point for further investigation of the work of Leonardo da Vinci. His many
interests create a unique opportunity for cross-curricular study on subjects from painting and sculpture to
engineering, zoology, botany, mapmaking and anatomy, as well as his use of different media – pen and ink,
red and black chalks, watercolours and metal point.

in Leonardo da Vinci: Ten drawings from the Royal Collection have been chosen by Martin Clayton, curator
of the Royal Collection to reflect the diverse talents of this great man.
Pupils will explore the materials used by Leonardo da Vinci to draw by looking at examples of his materials
alongside the drawings, followed by a comparison of the similarities and differences in the materials used
today. An investigation of the ten drawings in the exhibition will reveal the themes that interested
Leonardo. The session will also involve a practical element, trying out some of the processes that
Leonardo himself used over 450 years ago.
