THE CARIBBEAN – HURRICANE MATTHEW
Hurricane conditions are expected to reach
Haiti by Monday evening 3 October or early
morning Tuesday 4 October.
High waves combined with excessive rainfall,
hurricane-force winds and storm surges could
cause extensive damage, primarily in coastal
areas.
United Nations Disaster Assessment and
Coordination (UNDAC) teams have arrived in
Jamaica and Haiti and are supporting national
efforts.
The National Emergency Operations Centres
(COE) are active in countries including Bahamas,
Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica.
They remain on alert.

ATLANTIC:
Hurricane Cat 4 Matthew is passing through the Caribbean
northbound to Florida. Under alert: Jamaica, Haiti, Western
Cuba, East of the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
Floods are reported in Jamaica and Haiti. Worst damages
are expected by the end of the week.

Drought has caused the loss of 558,000
hectares and killed 612,000 animals
according to the Vice Minister of Civil
Defense. It is estimated that more than 145,000
families are affected (some 725,000 people).
ARGENTINA
The 5.4 earthquake (Richter scale) of 28
September Northwest of the Momotombo
volcano left 487 houses damaged. These
damages go from total damage, collapsed walls to
fallen roofs. This seism was an aftershock of the
5.9 earthquake on 14 September
Volcano de Colima, the most active volcano
in México, expulsed fumarole of high
intensity again, so authorities decided to
maintain an exclusion zone of 12 km around. Some
400 people have been evacuated, most of them to
official shelters. Nearby municipalities have
registered ash fall. For 17 years, the volcano 3,940
meters high remains active.

A strong explosion of Volcano del Fuego,
followed by a column of smoke occurred on
Monday 3 October. Authorities of the
National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction
(CONRED) are monitoring the situation. The
volcano presented activity during the past
weekend; there was no need to evacuate
communities. No damages have been reported.
At least 6 eruptions in the Turrialba volcano
have been registered in the last days, as
informed by the Volcanology and Seismology
Observatory of Costa Rica. The ashes from this
activity –along with winds heading North- will reach
the sector of Guápiles (province of Limón). The
activity of the Turrialba volcano remains strong since
29 April 2016 and is actually the most active volcano
in Costa Rica.
