Cornucopia theme will focus on seasonal changes and what these changes mean in terms of your child’s life, as well as the lives of animals, farmers, and plants. Letters of the Week: Students are introduced to three or four letters a week but our focus is on the letter of the week. We become letter detectives at school. Students may do the same at home. Looking for the letter of the week is a great way for students to familiarize themselves with print. The letters of the week for this month will be E, F, G, and I. By the end of this month students will have been introduced to the following letters: I, J, K, L, M, N, O, and P Sign Language: Sign language words we have learned: Thank you, water, restroom , I love you, sorry, friends, sing, read, together, numbers 1-10, and play. Our Caterpillar Word Wall: Every week we will be adding new words to our word wall. These sight words are frequently used words in the English language. I also like to call these words “Snappy Words” because your child should know them in a snap. Snappy words introduced or will be: is, I, a, are, can, for, and, to, my, like, the, see, because. Learning these words will help strengthen your child’s reading and writing foundation skills. Reading: This month we will continue to blend letters to make words. We will focus on CVC words. You child will be stretching and reading CVC words with /a/, /o/, /e/, /i/, and /u/. . In class, our stories for this month will be: “ Pet Day”, “My Bus, “ The Party” and “The Salad”. Writing Time: Model writing continues to be enforced. Students continue practicing writing in their writing journals as well as theme related writings. Children are encouraged to write words the way they sound. This is called invented spelling. For example, your child may spell the word “bat” by writing “b t” Your child might begin by writing beginning consonant sounds and with time will progress to writing vowels and ending sounds. Research shows that by using invented spelling the child will focus more on the purpose of writing: communication. Hearing Test: Your child got their hearing tested. You will be notified if there are any concerns. Conference Time: Conferences will be held Wednesday, September 16th and Thursday, September 17th .. Please see or call me to set up a conference. I will be sending home a reminder of the day and time. I look forward to seeing you. Ben’s Bells: Ben’s Bells is a wonderful program that encourages “Kindness”. Your child may receive a “Kind Kids Flower” for showing acts of kindness. Twice a week I will have a kind kids drawing. If your child is selected, they will receive a prize.
