School Council Meeting—January 23, 2014—6:00 p.m..
Dear Eastbourne Families,
“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.”
T.S. Eliot. It is with this in mind that we welcome you back and wish you a happy new year. We
hope that the new year brings you peace, joy and prosperity.
After two weeks of rest our students have settled back into their daily routines and we look forward to continued success for
the remainder of the school year. We would like to take this opportunity to Welcome back Mrs. Nunes. We would like to send
our best wishes and gratitude to Ms. Sidhu who helped fill some very big shoes while Mrs. Nunes was away. We would also
like to welcome our new Office Assistant Mrs. Heather Smith. She will be here with us in the mornings.
Best regards,
Ms. Casey and Mrs. Salman
SCHOOL FOCUS
LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES
Curriculum:
This month our teachers will be busy collaborating and learning along side other teachers in our Board. We will be welcoming and co-learning with teachers from Fallingdale,
Thorndale and Claireville to improve programming in both
numeracy and literacy programs.
Please remember that we have several students and teachers who have life threatening
allergies. Life threatening is defined as: a
strong possibility that the student or teacher
will die if the allergen is ingested. It is the
policy of the Peel District School Board to
minimize risks for students who have life
threatening allergies through the development and implementation of school management plans
(developed in consultation with each student’s parents).
Skating 101:
It is with great please that I inform you
Eastbourne Drive Public school will be
participating in its annual skating programs from January 10th to February
13th, 2014 at the Earnscliffe Recreational Centre. It is on
Thursdays from 1:20 to 2:20 p.m. We look forward to seeing
everyone on the ice. Please remember to dress warmly and
bring your skates, helmets and smiles!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO REPORT YOUR CHILD'S
ABSENCE
When your child is away from school or will be
coming late to school for any reason, please call
the school office or leave a message on our voice
mail—(905) 792 2264.
Students in our school have life threatening allergies to the
following items: sesame seeds, eggs, and nuts/peanuts. As
we have communicated previously, we request that you avoid
sending lunch items with peanuts and or nuts. If a student happens to bring a specific allergen into a classroom with the life
threatening allergy, the student will be given the option of eating in another specified classroom or bringing a friend to the
office to eat at one of the tables.
Thank you for your ongoing help in avoiding sending these
items to school and thank you for helping us keep all members
of our school safe.
FOOD AND OR TREATS ON SPECIAL HOLIDAYS AND
BIRTHDAYS
Due to the fact that we have students who
have life threatening allergies we request that
you not send food items when celebrating
birthdays and/or holidays as this puts our
students at risk of being exposed to life
threatening situations. Note that Tim Hortons
does not guarantee a nut free or allergen free products and
is not safe to bring to school.
HELP YOUR FAMILY STAY WARM THIS WINTER
Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for
staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when
working or playing outdoors:
 Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the
head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.
 Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay
trapped around the body.
 Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof
boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to
replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens
are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to
school, on outings, etc.
 Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to
hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself
when doing vigorous activities.
 Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit
are less susceptible to hypothermia.
 If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment
to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an
extreme change in temperature increases the risk of
developing hypothermia.
 Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins.
 If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness)
carry emergency supplies.
REGISTER FOR FRENCH IMMERSION BY JANUARY 31
Are you thinking of registering your child for French
Immersion (FI)? For the 2014-15 school year, parents must
register children for entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on
Friday, January 31, 2014.
Registration for FI is available through an online
registration form at www.peelschools.org/parents/
programs/French/registration.
The French Immersion school for
our area for students living west of
Torbram Road is Dorset Drive
Public School (905) 793-5210. For
students living east of Torbram
Road our area French Immersion school is Folkstone Public
School (905) 792-2266.
Registration process
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a
specific number of spots are available for students entering
grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the
deadline exceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a
random selection process system will be used to identify
students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program.
All students who make the registration deadline will be
placed in a random selection process and assigned a rank
using a computerized random selection process. Spots are
not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once
students have been assigned to all available spots,
remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on
the school's waitlist.
Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To
find out if your child does not need to participate in the
random selection process, and for more information about
the random selection and waitlist processes, visit
www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/
French/registration.
How to get more information
WAITING FOR STUDENTS AT DISMISSAL TIME
 Visit the Peel board website—www.peelschools.org/
Pickup time can be chaotic and confusing,
as hundreds of children are matched with
adults in about 15 minutes! Dismissal of
school for all students is at 3:15 p.m.
Parents/Guardians are asked to please wait
outside for your children. Since there are a number of adults
coming into and out of the school at dismissal time, it is
important that we keep traffic to a minimum to ensure the
safety of all our students.
 Call the French Immersion schools as noted above.
 Visit the Canadian Parents for French website at http://
parents/programs/French/registration.
on.cpf.ca/.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
School begins at 8:40 am. If you are late,
please park your car and accompany your
child to the office to sign in your child. Please
do not enter through the back doors.
