Syllabus for Exploration of Spanish Culture - Year B

20162017 Exploration of Spanish Culture Year B Sra. Jill Fletcher, Certified K12 French & Spanish This is a (relatively) easy class to earn a good grade in. Be present physically and mentally (put all other thoughts out of your mind for this short time). Participate. Ask questions. Do your homework. Study for quizzes and tests. Come in for help, and keep in contact, when you need to. Exploration of Spanish culture is a class intended to explore Hispanic culture around the world, take a look at some of their festivals, iconic art, music, food, people and historical sites, roleplay in a social situation(s) with (limited) Spanish phrases, help you understand “what to expect” while traveling (tickets, the Metro, currency and 24hour clock). We will cover many things, but certainly not even close to everything. *Please note, this is NOT a Spanish language course. Beginning Class Each Day ● We will begin class with prayer, the Apostle’s Creed, and key Bible verses (in Spanish). ● ALL questions, signatures and “business” must wait until AFTER we have prayed, and until AFTER I have started the class on the day’s assignment. Otherwise, you can catch me at the end of class or after school. Check the counter first, if you have been absent. Prayer, The Apostle’s Creed and Bible Verses in Spanish ● Stand for prayer at the beginning of class. (Levántense). Do not lean or move around. ● We are praying. Be sure to reflect that. I will pray in Spanish and translate to English. ● Remain standing. We will say The Apostle’s Creed and select Bible verses in Spanish immediately after prayer together, and at the same speed. ● If you are goofing around or not participating, it is an automatic afterschool detention or Owed Time, at the teacher’s discretion. Materials Needed: ● A folder or binder designated for this class. (You will have handouts you need to keep.) ● A notebook for culture/test notes ● Pencil and red pen ● Optional small note cards for learning facts (keep it SMALL) ● Sometimes colored pencils, a glue stick, or other craft supplies, if not supplied for you. ● We could use extra kleenex boxes, if you feel like bringing one in. :) What to do if you are absent: ● Check the counter under the sign that says, “Absent? See below” for recent days’ work. ● YOU are responsible for making up any work that you missed before the next test/quiz. You should be in your seat when the bell rings. If you cannot make it in time, you must have a note from the previous teacher, explaining why you are tardy/excusing you. If someone comes to the door, the student closest to the door will answer it. Please enter and exit quietly. The door “slams” quite easily, and it is distracting to all. If you ask to use the restroom, it MUST be an urgent matter. We are here for a brief class period, and you need to be present. If this becomes a habit, I will subtract a point from your Preparedness & Participation grade for the week for each occurrence. Homework & Inclass Work ● The INBOX is the ONLY SAFE PLACE for your work! Do not put it anywhere else! ● Due the day after assigned, unless otherwise noted. I will enter a ZERO, if the homework was due, but not turned in. Your grade will still reflect a ZERO for that assignment until it is turned in completed. ● If you are absent, or have other extenuating circumstances, I will accept work at full credit until we test over that material. I cannot accept any work after the test. ● Do your best to complete the work accurately. I will subtract points, if it is not correct, or
if it is incomplete. You must give a goodfaith attempt at any artwork, project or craft assigned, if you wish to earn full credit. (I’m not an artist, either.) *You will receive one free homework coupon per quarter (to not do it at all), or to wipe out a lower score. This is an EXEMPT grade (no score), it will neither help, nor hurt your grade. Just turn in the coupon with the name of the assignment you are exempting. You may wait until the end of the quarter to decide how to use this. Preparedness & Preparation ● You will receive 5 points for each day that you are prepared, participate, and are a “good citizen” during class time. Talking out of turn, or disrupting class will result in points lost, and likely a call home. I will subtract one point for that day for each instance. ● Be kind to one another. Be a good listener. Take notes. Participate. Be prepared. Do your best work. ● If I assign you to work with one or more other students, make them feel welcome and “loved”. I should NEVER see anything from you verbally or in your body language that would make the other person(s) feel bad. Be professional and work together as assigned. ● If you have to leave to get materials that you should have brought to class, I will subtract a point for each occurrence from your Preparedness & Participation grade for the week. ● If you do not understand something, have a question or comment, please raise your hand, and wait to be recognized. ● Stay in your assigned seats during work time, unless otherwise assigned. Contacting Me & Extra Help ● The best way to contact me is through email at: [email protected]. Love for God ~ Love for Others ~ Excellence in Effort ~ Integrity in Conduct ●
