MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
The summer has been busy with upgrading technology and preparing classrooms and programs for the 20142015 year. As many of you know I am a familiar face, but I am excited to transition into the role of principal at
BCMS.
.
I am pleased to welcome several new families to our community, and I am excited to meet the seventh grade
class as well as the returning students who are now officially eighth graders. Our school theme for this year is
“Mustang Nation: #iBelong.” The interpretation of Mustang Nation is that each student is a part of the school
community, and we come together as a nation to support each other. Our goal is to create leadership opportunities and to encourage all children to become active, life-long learners. We hope to provide expanded opportunities for students to acquire skills for our vastly changing society.
I would like to take this opportunity to also highlight important dates for Registration and Parent Back-ToSchool Night. Registration dates are based on incoming grade level. On your assigned day, you will receive
your child’s schedule, a copy of the school calendar, and you will be able to tour the building. Back-To-School
night comes early this year. This evening will give you, as parents, the opportunity to see what it is like to walk
in your student’s shoes. You will have the chance to meet each of your student’s teachers, get an overview of
the curriculum, and hear about teachers’ expectations. We will also have our school store open during Back-ToSchool Night. Please stop by to see what we have to offer!
Important dates to remember:
August 6, Wednesday, 1 -7 PM – 8th grade schedule pick-up
August 7, Thursday, 1-7 PM – 7th grade schedule pick-up
August 18, Monday, 7:20 AM – 12:35 PM – 7th grade Transition Day
August 20, Wednesday, 7:45—2:40—first day of school
As we embark upon a new year together, I ask you to continue your enthusiasm and support for our outstanding
school and I encourage you to become involved. I am confident that a strong partnership between parents, teachers and community members will unlock a number of possibilities for the coming school year. Please enjoy
your last days of summer. Fall will be here before you know it.
Sincerely,
Sherri Lewis, Ed. D.
Principal

HEALTH SERVICES
Immunizations:
The state of Missouri requires immunizations be up to date for school attendance. Students will not be allowed to pick up a schedule or attend classes until immunization records are up to date and on file in the Health Room. Satisfactory evidence of immunizations is a state immunization data card or record from a physician’s office or other health clinic, and
must include the month, day, and year of each immunization. Student immunization records will
automatically be transferred from Lee’s Summit Elementary Schools to BCMS, and you should have
been notified if the immunizations were not in compliance. Sports physicals will not be accepted as
proof of immunization. You do not need to bring immunization records to enrollment unless your
student has received new immunizations.
State law requires that all 8TH GRADERS have the Tdap immunization in order to enroll in
school for 2014-15. “Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine will be required for all
incoming eighth (8th) grade students if the child has completed the recommended childhood
DTaP/DTP vaccination series and has not received a Td booster within the past two (2)
years.” (19 CSR 20-28.010) The Tdap immunization can be provided by your health care provider or through the Jackson County Health Department at several locations (816/404-6415).
Remember your student will not be allowed to enroll, pick up their schedules or attend
classes without this immunization.
Medications:
If your student needs to take any prescription medication while at school, you can download the parent permission slip from the district web site http://www.leesummit.k12.mo.us/health/. The prescription label serves as the doctor’s order, however, we need to have a current prescription label.
If you would like to have any "over-the-counter” medications (i.e., allergy eye drops, allergy medicine, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) we need a parent permission slip completed http://
www.leesummit.k12.mo.us/health/ and a doctor’s order for the medicine.
Remember students cannot transport or carry medication to and from school or during the school
day, this includes inhalers used to treat asthma. If your student is going to carry an inhaler at
school, you will need a physician signature on the Asthma Action Plan stating that your student has
been instructed on proper use of the inhaler and the student is able to perform this procedure properly. Paperwork to complete these requirements has previously been sent home with students and
will also be available at enrollment.
If you have any questions regarding your student’s health concerns, immunizations or other health
related needs, please contact the Health Room at 986-3179 and leave a message. Our Fax Number is 986-3210. Phone calls will be able to be returned when our Health Room re-opens in August.
Please have a fun, safe and healthy summer. We look forward to seeing you at Open Enrollment
on July 31 and August 1!!

COUNTY TO OFFER IMMUNIZATION CLINIC
FOR AREA STUDENTS JULY 31 AT PLMS
The Jackson County Health Department will hold an immunization clinic
for Lee’s Summit area students from 1 to 6 p.m. July 31 at Pleasant Lea
Middle School, 630 SW Persels Road. Students must bring a copy of
their insurance/Medicaid card (if applicable), a copy of their immunizations and be accompanied by a parent or an adult. If the parent cannot
be present, the parent needs to send a signed note giving permission for
the child to receive the immunization.
The Jackson County Health Department also provides immunization clinics at locations in Lee's Summit and Greenwood. The Lee's Summit
clinic is offered from 1 to 3:30 p.m. the third and fourth Mondays at Lee’s
Summit United Methodist Church, 114 SE Douglas. The Greenwood
clinic is offered from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on the second Tuesdays at Greenwood City Hall, 709 W. Main St.
Children who are covered by Medicaid will not pay for
the immunizations. A $10 administration fee is charged
for children who do not have insurance or who are covered by a plan that does not pay for immunizations. Children with insurance that pays for the immunizations will
pay for the immunizations at the clinic and receive a receipt for reimbursement to send to the insurance company. There is no charge for any student 11 years or
older for the TDaP vaccine only, except for the $10 administration fee for children not on Medicaid. For more
information about the clinic, contact Jackson County
Health Department at (816) 404-6415.

As we plan for the 2014-15 school year, please make note of our school
district’s continuing focus on verifying the residency of all R-7 School
District students. Residency requirements are designed to make it more
difficult for non-resident students to attend our schools at taxpayer expense.
To help us with this effort, we are asking all parents and guardians
to provide proof of residency during enrollment/registration.
Residency can be verified by providing your school’s office with
one of the following:
A current, original utility bill (electricity, gas-not propane, water or water statement of account required). For enrollment prior to the beginning of school a billing/statement date of either June 2014 or July
2014 will be required, during the school year the billing/statement
date needs to be within 30 days of the date the student is attempting
to enroll. The bill must be in the resident’s name with no final or disconnect notices accepted.
On-line payment information will be accepted only from the utility company (not a third-party pay service) and include all the information
listed above.
A rental/lease agreement including dates of agreement and the name,
address, phone number and signature of the landlord.
A contract to build a home within the R-7 School District reflecting a
possession and closing date within 90 calendar days of the first day
of school attendance.

Catch-Up Corner
At BCMS, we continually work to provide the most effective programs that ensure your
student’s success. Over the last few years, we studied the most current research and practices to design programs that best support our vision of nurturing our student’s progress towards becoming literate, life-long learners, and problems solvers.
As a result of our study of homework, we created a Learning Outside the Classroom Belief
Statement (a copy is in the front of the student handbook.) To support our belief statement,
we have implemented a program called Catch-Up Corner.
Our goal is to ensure each student is learning all essential concepts. Catch-Up Corner will
hold each student accountable for completing each assignment and provide an immediate
intervention for those that choose not to complete an assignment. If a student does not
complete an assignment, he/she will be assigned a Catch-Up Corner for the next morning.
Catch-Up Corner will meet Monday through Friday from 6:30-7:20am.
If your child is assigned a Catch-Up Corner, you will receive a phone call from him/her.
The purpose of the call is to inform you that he/she will need to come to school early the
next morning, 6:30 am. . This phone call must be brief so that your child does not miss important time in class. In addition, the teacher will not be available to speak with you at that
time; he/she will be busy teaching class. If you want to speak to the teacher, please leave a
message on voicemail or email.
During Catch-Up Corner, your child will have the opportunity to complete the assignment.
The assignment will be accepted by the teacher at the next class for full credit. If a student
does not complete the assignment during Catch-Up Corner, it will be his/her responsibility
to complete it on his/her own time. If the assignment is not turned in at the next class, your
child will be assigned another Catch-Up Corner. At this point, the assignment may receive
only partial credit.
Since we understand that everyone has a bad night, we are providing each student with two
Catch-Up Corner passes each quarter. This does not excuse the student from completing
the assignment, but does excuse them from Catch-Up Corner. The assignment will be due
at the next class period.
Each sponsor of an after-school activity or sport has developed a policy pertaining to
Catch-Up Corner. Sponsors will provide written information to all participants.
We believe that our Catch-Up Corner intervention will provide for the needs of our students by giving them extra time and help they need to complete their assignments and
learn essential concepts.

BREAKFAST & LUNCH INFORMATION
Campbell utilizes a computerized lunch program. This program allows students to deposit money into an individual account using a personal identification number. As students make food purchases, the amount is deducted
from their account, and a complete listing of all items purchased is automatically entered and maintained in the
computer. Students may deposit money into their individual accounts during breakfast or drop their check into the
basket located in the service area to assure money is in the account before lunch. Students may deposit cash or a
check payable to “R-7 Nutrition Services.” ALL CHECKS MUST HAVE THE STUDENT’S NAME AND STUDENT ID NUMBER ON THEM. Student lunch numbers can be found on the schedule. No prepayments will be
taken during the lunch hours. You may also deposit money in your student’s account by using your charge card
on-line. Just go to http://www.leesummit.k12.mo.us/nutrition/ and follow the directions. Please allow 24 hours
for the money to transfer.
A-la-carte items may be purchased as well as the regular meal. Students on the free or reduced lunch program
may deposit money into their accounts to use for a-la-carte items such as cookies or ice cream.
Students may review their accounts before school or immediately after breakfast. Parents may ask for a print out
of their child’s account by calling Jennifer Eastep, our cafeteria manager, at 986-3200. Jennifer will be available
to take money for your student’s account at registration.

Lee's Summit CARES - Character Education
The mission of Lee's Summit CARES is to direct, support and actively coordinate efforts of the community to
significantly reduce substance abuse, promote youth safety and thereby improve the health and well-being of
the community.
Lee's Summit is a Community of Character committed to character development. Lee's Summit CARES has
formed the Lee's Summit Character Council whose goal is to establish Lee's Summit as a Community of Character. We have leadership involvement from important sectors in our community; family, schools, city government, law enforcement, parks and recreation, media, business, faith and health care.
Character traits are internal characteristics formed in response to life experiences and are the basis of good
character. The Character Council has assigned a character trait to each calendar month so the community can
learn more about ways to highlight that trait going forward.
At Campbell Middle School we recognize students that exemplify the character trait of the month in advisory
by giving them a certificate and Blizzard. In the parent calendar, you will find the Character Trait for that
month.
Here are some of the benefits of good character:
Strengthens the family
Serves the community
Provides a sense of purpose
Balances personal and professional roles
Highlights the value of each individual
Fosters Accountability
Builds a foundation for success in life
Visit the Lee's Summit CARES website at www.lscares.org to find out more information and learn about drug
free activities for students.

IMPORTANT DISTRICT INFORMATION
Missouri State High School Activity Association (MSHSAA)
ACTIVITY / ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FEES
The R-7 athletic/activity program goal reflects that student activities and athletics are an integral part of the total secondary educational program because they provide experiences that will help students to acquire additional knowledge and skills, plus they help students gain the attributes of good citizenship.
Students wishing to participate in any middle school MSHSAA sponsored activity will be charged $25 for yearly
participation. In addition, students wishing to participate in a middle school MSHSAA sponsored sport will be
charged a $25 participation fee per student. A maximum activity/athletic participation fee of $50 per family will be
charged for participating in middle school activities. Also a maximum participation fee of $50 per family will be
charged for participating in middle school interscholastic sports. Please consult your building assistant principal/
activities director regarding any questions or concerns regarding the middle school participation fee.
The following guidelines will assist with implementation for the collection of fees:
1. The student will not be allowed to participate in an activity/athletics at the middle school until the fee is paid in
full. It is the intent that all participation fees will be collected at registration. If a student decides to participate
in a middle school activity later in the school year, students must pay the fee in the activities office (student administration).
2. If a student is cut from a team but has already paid the fee, he/she will be reimbursed, if no game has been
played.
3. If a student quits or is suspended from a team or performing group after the first scheduled event, no refund
will be granted.
4. If a student is injured during or after the first scheduled game so that he/she can no longer compete, the fee will
not be refunded.
5. Other extenuating circumstances, such as a student transferring to another district prior to the first activity or season or is being placed on homebound, may be considered by the building administrator for reimbursement.
6. Students qualifying for the free lunch program will be exempt from the activity/athletic participation fee. Student qualifying for the reduced lunch program will pay 50% of the activity/athletic participation fee. Student/
parent should contact the building principal to verify their fee or reduced lunch status. Each case will be evaluated independently.
7. Activity fees will be collected at registration. Fees may also be paid later in the school year in the Student Administration office.

SPORTS PHYSICALS
MISSOURI STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY ASSOCIATON (MSHSAA)
(MSHSAA)
We encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities, and one of these areas is our sports
program. We have interscholastic programs for eighth graders. Both seventh and eighth graders may
participate in cross country and wrestling.
ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN A SPORT MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL FORM ON FILE WITH THE BCMS
STUDENT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE PRIOR TO ANY PARTICIPATION IN THE SPORT and pay a $25 activity
fee. MSHSAA physical forms may be picked up at the school and are on-line. This is a four page form
that is completed by the parent and student’s physician. One portion on the form requires signatures
from both the parent and athlete. By signing this portion, you are saying that you have received and
read the MSHSAA materials on concussions. This booklet can be found on-line at http://
bcms.leesummit.k12.mo.us. Booklets will also be available at registration and are attached to the
MSHSAA sports physical forms.
ACTIVITY INSURANCE COVERAGE
The R-7 School District does not have accident insurance on students in the school district
as the cost of providing this insurance would be prohibitive. The Board of Education is
making available a nominally-priced student accident insurance plan. This plan has been
offered in the R-7 School District for a number of years and is a contract between the family and the insurance company. An insurance application can be picked up at registration.
Students must be insured to participate in sports.
8th GRADE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS
Eighth grade girls interested in trying out for volleyball will need to attend tryouts beginning on Wednesday, August 20 and run through August 26, from 2:50 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will need to bring the
following before being allowed to tryout: current physical, gym clothes, appropriate shoes (no black

SCHOLAR BOWL
DO YOU LIKE TRIVIA?
DO YOU WATCH TV SHOWS SUCH AS
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?
Scholar Bowl is open to both
7th and 8th grade students.
In Scholar Bowl we begin practice in October after school. Students answer questions on a wide variety of topics—science, literature, history, geography, math, current events, etc. Students “buzz in” with their answer. These practices help students develop their confidence so when our season begins in January, they are ready
to compete against other area middle schools. Our competitive season ends in
March. We sponsor both varsity and junior varsity teams, so everyone in Scholar
Bowl can participate!
Scholar Bowl is a fun way to learn and to compete!
Even if you are involved in other activities,
students can still be a part of Scholar Bowl!
Questions? See Mrs. Giangreco in room 153.

PARENT DELIVERIES & MESSAGES
Due to frequent interruptions to instructional time, students will not be called out of class to get items that
parents have brought to them. The students should check in the office between classes.
It is the policy of the administration not to relay phone messages to students. Parents are not to depend on
the office staff to remind students of appointments or make arrangements for after school activities/rides.
Staff members will deliver emergency messages only.
BCMS Parent—Student Bulletin
We will be e-mailing the bulletin each Friday to parents. Important information is in the bulletin. The
student bulletin is read to the students during advisory on
Mondays. All parent e-mails are deleted at the end of each year
and need to be resubmitted. For those of you that do not have
e-mail accounts, you will also be able to view the bulletin on
the BCMS website http://bcms.leesummit.k12.mo.us/.
EARLY RELEASE DAYS
This year there will be several early release days of school. School is dismissed at
12:10 p.m. Buses leave at approximately 12:20 p.m. There is breakfast on these
days but no lunch service. Students will be allowed to bring a snack. Early release
days provide time for conferences, staff professional development and department
meetings.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN THE MEDIA CENTER
There are a lot of exciting events planned in the Media Center for the 2014-15 school year, and
we need your help. If you are interested in helping plan, set-up or run the events, please contact the librarian, Mr. Miller. Additionally, volunteers are needed to help with shelving, processing new items, and other day-to-day library tasks. If you can give a few hours a month,
please let us know. You can reach Nathan Miller at (816) 986-3193 or you can e-mail him at
[email protected]
PAGE 17
ABSENCES & MAKEMAKE-UP HOMEWORK
A parent needs to call the attendance office at
986-3177 each day a student is absent. When
a parent calls the office to report an absence on
the second consecutive day, homework may be
requested. This call needs to be received by
9:00 a.m. in order to get homework that day.
Homework may be picked up in the front office
between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. You may e-mail
teachers to get homework. Any time a student
is away from the building (other than a field trip)
he/she will be classified as absent. It will be
coded as excused or unexcused. Absences and
late arrivals not verified by a parent or guardian
are coded as unexcused.
WEDNESDAY LATE START
With the exception of the first day of
school, August 20 and October 22,
school will start at 8:45 on Wednesdays.
Students may enter the building at 8:20.
BUS NOTES
CAR RIDERS
Use the west entrance (between Underwood
and BCMS) to drop off and pick up students.
Students will not be permitted into the building
prior to 7:20 a.m. This is to help ensure the
safety of our students while the building is not
supervised.
For the safety of the children, please form just
one car drop off line and do not drive beside the
buses as they unload. Thank you.
When a student is riding a different bus home or
getting off at a different stop, two notes are required: one note from the parent of the student
who is riding a different bus; and one note from
the parent of the student with whom they are riding home. These notes should include both student’s first and last names, the date, the parent’s signature and a phone number where the
parent may be reached. These students should
take the note to the office window before school
to have it approved.

Advisory and Wednesdays during 4 Areas are silent sustained reading days.
READ 15
Research shows that students who read at least 60 minutes per week for enjoyment make gains in comprehension, fluency, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
Therefore, all BCMS students and staff read for the first 15 minutes of every Advisory.
visory Join us in this effort by encouraging your student to bring an independent
reading book, magazine, or dedicated eReader with them to school each day.

MAGAZINE SALES
MONEY RAISED SUPPORTS MULTIPLE BCMS PROGRAMS
Clubs, Advisory, and Team Programs
Reduced cost for student field trips
Activities and equipment for students
Every student that sells 4 or more subscriptions will receive a FREE yearbook!
Due to the tremendous success of our annual Magazine Sale, BCMS is able to do all these things.
Of course, we could not do it without our great BCMS parents, students, teachers and PTSA members working to make this program a success. The annual fall magazine sale is practically an institution in Lee’s Summit. Residents expect middle school students to sell magazines every fall as they
have for the past 30 plus years. That is good news for us!
The kick-off for magazine sales will be August 28 and continues through Friday, September
12. This allows two weekends to sell magazines. Students will receive daily prizes, cumulative
sales prizes, and advisory points for their involvement in the magazine sale campaign. This is our
main fundraiser for the year.
REMEMBER, renewals count the same as new subscriptions, so wait until August 28 to renew your
current magazines! Let’s start making plans to have another great sale this year.
How can you help? Start planning now!
1. Save your subscriptions
When you, your friends or relatives receive a magazine renewal notice in the mail or a telephone
solicitation to renew any current subscriptions, please ignore them . You can renew any current
subscription and subscribe to a wide variety of publications through the students at Campbell.
Renewal orders will simply extend the current subscription, regardless of its expiration date.
2. Shop online at www.gaschoolstore.com. After checking out all the great magazines,
be sure to take a look at all the other great gifts-including music or books.
3. Let your friends and relatives know about our fundraiser. Ask them to save their
subscriptions for our program.
Our goal and more will be revealed at our magazine assembly.
Be on the look at for more information.
Thank you in advance for your support! We are looking forward to your participation.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE
School administration is aware of the many different styles of dress that are being
worn today by students to school, church, and other formal activities. However, we
wish to emphasize that when any type of clothing is worn, or the way it is worn, causes
a distraction in the classroom, or creates a health or safety problem, the student
wearing such apparel will be asked to either change to more appropriate dress and
conduct or leave the school premises.
ITEMS NOT PERMISSIBLE:
1. Clothing with inappropriate skin exposure including shirts with low necklines or
ones allowing underwear to show, such as: tank tops, halter tops, mesh tops/see
through tops, and short skirts and shorts, strapless tops or dresses, and short tops
that expose the stomach.
2. Underwear must not show.
3. Clothes with holes, and any cut, ripped, un-hemmed or cutoff clothing that results
in inappropriate skin or undergarment exposure. These clothes are not allowed even
when other garments are worn underneath.
4. Work-out or bike clothing is not appropriate unless worn under acceptable clothing.
5. Clothing that advertises products dealing with or having references to profanity,
alcohol, tobacco, drugs, sex, violence, or representing weapons or gangs or slogans
that are suggestive or have double meanings will not be permitted.
Pants are to be worn at waist level. Waistbands of shorts and pants may not
be rolled.
Wallet chains and wristbands are not permitted.
Hats may not be worn inside the building during the school day or at after
school activities. This includes stocking caps, scarves, bandanas,
and other headwear.
Writing on skin or clothing will not be permitted.
Shoes or sandals are to be worn at all times.
Pajamas and house shoes are not permitted.
THE SCHOOL RESERVES THE RIGHT TO RESTRICT

Seventh Grade Parents:
We are excited to announce that Campbell Middle School’s Seventh Grade Transition Day will
be held Monday, August 18, from 7:20 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. This day is for seventh grade students only. Seventh Grade Transition Day has been designed to alleviate potential student concerns about the first day of school and to address the differences between elementary and middle school without the pressure of having over 900 students on the first day of school. We have
found that seventh graders are often worried about finding their classes, opening lockers, accessing the cafeteria, eating lunch, and meeting expectations in a middle school setting.
Bus transportation is provided to and from school on this day so be sure to check your bus number and pick-up time on the postcard that will be mailed to your child a couple of weeks before
Orientation Day. Students will need to bring lunch money if you did not prepay for lunch during schedule pick-up. Students should dress appropriately for school, and report to 1st hour
upon arrival. Students do not need to bring any school supplies or materials with them on this
day.
We are happy to provide this great opportunity to welcome your child to our Mustang family.
Please take advantage of a great time on August 18. Remember, schedule pick-up for seventh
grade students is August 7 from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Annually, the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District presents a Human Growth and Development Unit for
seventh grade students. Health classes will be using abstinence-based curriculum materials from the
“Choosing the Best Path” curriculum. Due to the sensitivity of the material, boys and girls will meet
separately for portions of this unit.
At all of the middle schools we feel a shared responsibility with the parents and the community to disseminate information that will assist students in making intelligent and informed decisions concerning
their health, safety, and well being. There will be a parent meeting to view the videos/student workbook
from the “Choosing the Best Path” curriculum. The meeting will be at Stansberry Leadership Center in
the Board Room, Tuesday, September 16 at 6:00 PM.
The topics for the Human Growth and Development Unit are listed below:
1. Heredity and the influences of family and environment on human growth and development.
2. The reproductive system which includes male and female organs, and the specific hormones
responsible for the production and release of reproductive cells and the development of secondary sex characteristics.
3. Facts about HIV/AIDS
If you prefer that your child does not receive instruction during the Human Growth and Development or
AIDS unit, including videos, please provide a written notice to Mr. Reece or Mr. Wolverton.

and gain awareness within the community. BCMS would like to help get this message to the thousands of families/relatives and sport fans that support our students. You can gain this visibility by
advertising through our Banner Program. It is a fantastic way to support your local schools. It also
helps to show your commitment to the youth in our community.
The program is explained as follows:
If you wish to participate in our banner/advertising program please let this letter serve as an invitation for you
to start displaying and advertising your company at BCMS Athletic events.
We have two sizes of banners to offer:
