There are not many cities in the world that can match the grace of
St. Petersburg. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, he hired Europe’s
best architects, craftsmen and artists to build and decorate it. It spreads
over 100 islands, is linked by over 600 bridges and is often referred to
as “The Venice of the North.” The main sites we visit on today’s tour are
Palace Square with the Winter Palace, Senate Square with the monument
to Russian Emperor Peter the Great, the city’s founder, St. Isaac’s Square
with St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Smolny Cathedral, Cruiser Aurora, Field of
Mars, Nevsky Prospect and the granite embankments of the Neva River.
Visit Peter and Paul Fortress built in 1703 on a small island which was
intended to protect the city from enemy attacks and is St. Petersburg’s
oldest structure. Visit Peter and Paul Cathedral, nowadays a museum
which towers in the center of the fortress and serves as the burial place
for Russian Emperors from Peter I. The gilded spire of the Peter and Paul
Cathedral is the highest landmark of the city. Your evening is free, or you
can join an optional Russian Folklore evening or Evening Canal Cruise. (B)
