This evening, meet your Tour Director before a Welcome Dinner. (D) Day 2, in Moscow, Saturday Moscow, one of the largest cities in the world, is Russia’s symbolic heart and soul. Today’s sightseeing tour begins at the Red Square, dominated by the colourful St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin’s massive red walls. Visit the Armoury Museum with its impressive collection of Tsarist, Russian and foreign jewelry, armour and other artifacts. Walking past Moscow University, continue with a drive along the wide boulevards and a stroll through GUM, Russia’s largest department store. Walking the north bank of the River Moskva, pass by the baroque Novodevichy convent and end the tour at the popular Arbat shopping district with time to shop or enjoy lunch on your own. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B) Day 3, in Moscow Sunday Today we travel 75 km north of Moscow to the small town of Sergiyev Posad, formerly Zagorsk, founded in the 14th century and renowned as a center of ancient Russian art and architecture. For centuries it served as a place of pilgrimage and the religious capital of Russia. Within the old walled city, admire the fairy-tale golden and blue domes of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, one of the most beautiful monasteries. After lunch at a popular restaurant, return to Moscow. The rest of the day at leisure. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, he hired Europe’s best architects, craftsmen and artists to build and decorate it. It spreads over 100 islands, is linked by over 600 bridges and is often referred to as “The Venice of the North.” The main sites we visit on today’s tour are Palace Square with the Winter Palace, Senate Square with the monument to Russian Emperor Peter the Great, the city’s founder, St. Isaac’s Square with St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Smolny Cathedral, Cruiser Aurora, Field of Mars, Nevsky Prospect and the granite embankments of the Neva River. Visit Peter and Paul Fortress built in 1703 on a small island which was intended to protect the city from enemy attacks and is St. Petersburg’s oldest structure. Visit Peter and Paul Cathedral, nowadays a museum which towers in the center of the fortress and serves as the burial place for Russian Emperors from Peter I. The gilded spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral is the highest landmark of the city. Your evening is free, or you can join an optional Russian Folklore evening or Evening Canal Cruise.
