200 years ago one of the most important events in American and British
history happened along the banks of the Thames River right here in
present-day Chatham-Kent. Follow the newly established Tecumseh
Parkway which begins at the Historic St. Peter’s Church nestled on the
Thames River. The picturesque Thames River winds its way through
Chatham-Kent and features over 12 pull-offs where you can read about
the fateful journey taken by First Nations and the British as they were
chased by the American forces in 1813 during the War of 1812. Trace
the steps of the past, leading to the site of the Tecumseh Monument and
the site of the Battle of the Thames where the great Chief Tecumseh
was killed, the dream of a Native nation was shattered, U.S. presidential
dreams were made and a British General’s career was destroyed. You
can finish your day by stopping at Parks Blueberries and Country Store
or by visiting Fairfield Museum commemorating the Moravian Settlement
that was burned to the ground following the fateful Battle of the Thames.

Motorcycle enthusiasts will find this route is well travelled every Friday the
13th (PD13) or for quick jaunts to Port Dover for a spin on the bike. On your
“cruise to the coast” be sure to stop in Caledonia, Hagersville or Jarvis for
a bite to eat, gas or some shopping. While the route is straight to Port
Dover, the pace is much slower than the city so enjoy a relaxed drive and
take in the sights.
