The22ndNationalSchoolsConstitutionalConvention(NSCC)isbeingheldatTheMuseumof
AustralianDemocracyatOldParliamentHouseinCanberrafromWednesday15MarchtoFriday17
March,2017.
RyanCatholicCollegeYear12student,MayaGastonwillbeamong120Year11and12students
fromgovernment,independentandCatholicschoolsfromacrossAustraliaattendingtheconvention.
TheNSCCprogramprovidesstudentswithanopportunitytobecomebetterinformedabouthow
Australia’sConstitutionprovidesademocraticframeworkandencouragesthemtotakeanactive
interestintheoperationofgovernment.Thetopicofthe2017Conventionis‘IndigenousAustralians
andtheConstitution’.
MayahasakeeninterestintheoperationofGovernment.Shesays”Itisanimportantissuefor
indigenouspeopleandstudentsmyagedon’talwaysgettheopportunitytovoicetheiropinions
sothat’swhyIdecidedtoparticipateattheNQConstitutionalConvention”
“WeareveryproudofMayaforgettingelectedtoattendtheNSCCConvention,”saidMrDavid
McNeale,RyanCatholicCollegePrincipal.
“It’sgreattoseeouryouthsopassionateaboutcurrentaffairs,politicsandthedemocraticlifeofthe
country.Theyareourfutureleadersandit’simportanttokeepthemengagedandinterestedin
wantingtomakearealdifferenceintheworld.”
EmeritusProfessorJohnWarhurstwillfacilitatethe2017ConventionwhereMaya,alongwithother
delegateswillspendtwodaysexploringthisyear’stopicofIndigenousAustraliansandthe
Constitution.Thiswillincludeinputfromapanelofexperts,groupdiscussionandtheopportunityto
persuadeotherdelegatesofparticularapproaches.
Mayawillgetthechancetoparticipateinamockreferendumtodeterminetheoutcomeoftheir
deliberations.AvisittoGovernmentHouseaswellasadinnerattheHighCourtofAustraliaarealso
partofprogram.
