and assonance. Charlotte gave me permission
to set her words to music. I hope this piece does
justice to her beautiful poem.”

A lively and rhythmic setting of this ancient text
in Hebrew and English. The form is strophic, with

signatures. The front matter of the edition includes

transliteration, a phonetic pronunciation guide,
and a substantial piano part. A rousing piece,
great for services or as a concert finale.

Stephen Chatman’s Train for SSAA chorus is an arrangement from his original set, Due West for SATB
chorus, commissioned by the Vancouver Chamber
Choir in 1997. The simple, charming text by Tara
Wohlberg rings specifically to a western theme.
Using onomatopoeia, ostinati, and a standard harmonic progression, Chatman applies a humorous
touch.

The Langston Hughes poem ‘I, Too’ is a powerful
statement by an African-American writer. Although
too often denied equal opportunity or respectful
treatment in this country, the author claims his
right as an American.

American poet Sara Teasdale won the Pulitzer Prize
for her 1917 collection of poems titled Love Songs.
The text for this song is taken from “Barter,” the first
in this set of poems. Despite the poet’s history of
poor emotional and physical health, the text captures a hopeful attitude that foreshadows the spirit
of optimism that was the precursor to the Roaring
Twenties. Oboe part is included.
