Tech Q&A
Connecting a new PC
to an older printer
BY STEVE ALEXANDER
McClatchy-Tribune News Service
QUESTION: My old HP LaserJet IIIP printer
from 1992 works fine, but when I bought a new Dell
computer I couldn’t connect the two. The printer
uses a 25-pin parallel connector to connect to a PC,
but the PC doesn’t have a parallel port plug. I also
couldn’t find the driver software the printer would
need for the new PC. Is there any way to connect
the printer to the new PC, or do I have to buy a new
printer?
— Jim Weigle, Minneapolis
ANSWER: Your printer is from an era before
printers were connected to PCs by USB cables or
Wi-Fi. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use it.
The software driver problem is already solved.
Your new PC probably came with Windows 7,
which contains the appropriate driver software.
Microsoft has instructions on activating it at http://
www.tinyurl.com/avh7cbr.
And you can connect the printer to the new PC,
either via a $7-$23 adapter that will convert your
printer’s parallel port cable into a USB connector,
or by adding a parallel port to your computer with a
$7 to $27 circuit board that fits into one of the PC’s
expansion slots.
Q: My 2009 PC came with a version of Windows
Live Photo Gallery that had a “fix” icon on the tool
bar. Opening the “fix” gave me access to photo
editing capabilities, and under the “Exposure” tab
there was a slider control for “Shadows,” a useful
function that could lighten only the dark parts of a
photo. I recently updated to a new version of Photo
Gallery, but I can no longer find the Shadows function. How can I get the old version of the software
back?
— Mel Bina, Tucson, Ariz.
A: I can see why you’d be willing to revert to the
old software; the Shadows option’s ability to affect
only the darkest portion of a picture is impressive.
But switching isn’t necessary, because the Shadows
option has simply shifted locations in the latest version of Windows Live Photo Gallery. To get there,
open the program, double-click a photo to select it
and click “adjust exposure” on the right to find the
“Shadows” command. Drag the slider control to
lighten or darken the dimmest parts of the photo.
Q: Videos don’t play correctly on my three-yearold PC. They stop every minute or so for several
seconds. Is there a fix for this?
— Bryna Ben-Asher, Tucson, Ariz.
A: The pauses occur because your PC is playing
the video faster than the PC is receiving it from the
Internet. You could get a faster Internet connection, or you could let the video finish streaming to
your PC before you watch it. Streaming is complete
when a “progress bar” beneath the video fills in.

Is technology a job killer?
A look at history
of tech advances
BY BERNARD CONDON
Associated Press
NEW YORK — To workers being pushed out of
jobs by today’s technology,
history has a message:
You’re not the first.
From textile machines
to the horseless carriage
to email, technology has
upended industries and
wiped out jobs for centuries. It also has created
millions of jobs, though
usually not for the people
who lost them.
A look at breakthroughs
that made the goods we
buy more affordable, our
lives more comfortable —
and our jobs more precarious:
First industrial
revolution
For most of history,
people made many goods
themselves. That changed
with the First Industrial
Revolution, which began
in England in the mid18th century and lasted
about 100 years.
New mechanical devices
that allowed one man to do
the work of several flooded
the market with products,
most notably textiles.
Using cords, wheels and
rollers, inventors sped up
the twisting of threads to
make yarn and the weaving
of yarn to make cloth.
Next, steam was used
to free the new machines
from the limits of man’s
muscle and make them
run faster. The new machines produced so much,
so fast and so cheaply,
more people could afford
to buy textiles. Demand
soared and so did jobs
manning the machines
and doing other work.
In America in 1793,
Eli Whitney freed slaves
from the laborious work of
picking sticky seeds from
cotton bolls by inventing
Associated Press
A section of the “Difference Engine,” the first computer ever made, designed by
Charles Babbage appeared between 1823 and 1842. From textile machines to the
horseless carriage to email, technology has upended industries and wiped out jobs
for centuries. It also has created millions of jobs, though usually not for the people
who lost them.
a cotton gin that did that
automatically. It led to
widespread planting of
cotton — but even more
work for slaves.
Second industrial
revolution
Life sped up more in
this period of innovation,
from the mid-19th century
to the early 20th century,
an age of steel and electric
power, expanding railroads and the automobile.
In 1856, an Englishman discovered a way
of making steel fast and
cheap, and other inventors soon improved the
process. Railroad companies started using steel
for their rails instead of
wrought iron, which bent
easily and needed to be
replaced often. Trains
could carry heavier loads,
which meant businesses
could send more products
to distant markets. Sales
increased, and so did jobs.
In 1861, a telegraph line
was strung from coast to
coast in the U.S., vastly
improving communication. It also wiped out the
Pony Express delivery
service; it went out of business the same year.
Information age
The inventor’s focus
shifted from building
things to manipulating
information. The tools
of this new period help
people gather and analyze
data and communicate
faster, cheaper, better.
No invention is commonly accepted as first of
the age, but one contender
is the first digital computer
in 1937, created by George
Stibitz of Bell Labs, the
former research arm of
AT&T.
In 1947, a team at
Bell Labs led by William
Shockley discovered how
to switch and amplify
electronic signals using
semiconductor material. It
was the first transistor.
In 1983, Motorola introduced the first portable
cellphone, a 2-pound
clunker called the DynaTac 8000x. In 1984, the
first PDA, or personal digital assistant, was sold —
the long-forgotten Psion.
In 1994, BellSouth sold
its first Simon, the start of
a stream of ever-smarter
smartphones from which
you can access virtually
any information while on
the run, including that
staple of the telephone operator — a phone number.
Which helps explain
why there were just
36,000 U.S. operators in
2010, down nearly twothirds in 10 years.
A job that rose in the
same period? Software
engineer. They numbered
1.03 million in 2010, up
nearly 40 percent.
Digital info can be stored in DNA
BY MALCOLM RITTER
Associated Press
Associated Press
Dr. Nick Goldman of EMBL-EBI examines synthesized DNA in an Eppendorf vial. Researchers said Wednesday that as a demonstration project, they had stored in DNA
all 154 Shakespeare sonnets, a photo, a scientific paper, and a 26-second sound clip
from Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream’’ speech. That all fit in a barely visible bit
of DNA in a test tube.
NEW YORK — It can store the information from a million CDs in a space no
bigger than your little finger, and could
keep it safe for centuries.
Is this some new electronic gadget?
Nope. It’s DNA.
The genetic material has long held all
the information needed to make plants
and animals, and now some scientists are
saying it could help handle the growing storage needs of today’s information
society.
Researchers reported Wednesday that
they had stored all 154 Shakespeare sonnets, a photo, a scientific paper, and a
26-second sound clip from Martin Luther
King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. That
all fit in a barely visible bit of DNA in a
test tube.
The process involved converting the
ones and zeroes of digital information
into the four-letter alphabet of DNA code.
That code was used to create strands of
synthetic DNA. Then machines “read”
the DNA molecules and recovered the
encoded information. That reading process took two weeks, but technological
advances are driving that time down, said
Ewan Birney of the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton, England.
He’s an author of a report published
online by the journal Nature.
DNA could be useful for keeping huge
amounts of information that must be kept
for a long time but not retrieved very often, the researchers said. Storing the DNA
would be relatively simple, they said: Just
put it in a cold, dry and dark place and
leave it alone.
The technology might work in the near
term for large archives that have to be
kept safe for centuries, like national historical records or huge library holdings,
said study co-author Nick Goldman of
the institute. Maybe in a decade it could
become feasible for consumers to store
information they want to have around in
50 years, like wedding photos or videos
for future grandchildren, Goldman said in
an email.
The researchers said they have no intention of putting storage DNA into a living thing, and that it couldn’t accidentally
become part of the genetic machinery of a
living thing because of its coding scheme.
Sriram Kosuri, a Harvard researcher
who co-authored a similar report last September, said both papers show advantages of DNA for long-term storage. But
because of its technical limitations, “it’s
not going to replace your hard drive,” he
said.
Kosuri’s co-author, Harvard DNA expert George Church, said the technology
could let a person store all of Wikipedia
on a fingertip, and all the world’s information now stored on disk drives could fit
in the palm of the hand.
