TRADITIONAL LEARNING ACADEMY SERVICES
Which Program is Best For You?
Traditional Homeschool
Program Highlights:
• Self paced and independent learning
• No tests or exams required
• Your choice of material
• $125 grant per student
Our first obligation is to assist parents in fulfilling their
obligation to register their child(ren) as traditional
homeschoolers with the Ministry of Education.
Since 1989, TLA has actively pursued and protected the
rights of parents to traditional homeschool and has implemented a strong support system. TLA has registered one-third
of all homeschoolers in BC and is passionate about the rights
and freedoms that traditional homeschoolers enjoy.
First time homeschoolers may feel overwhelmed with
where to begin and question their qualifications. Those who
have been homeschooling for awhile may begin to question if
they are doing enough. Whatever the obstacles, doubts or
opposition, being convinced that your child’s best interest will
be served by homeschooling should give you the confidence
and courage to follow through with your choice. A warm and
encouraging staff are just at the other end of the phone to give
you all the support and encouragement you need.
Distributed Learning Program
Program Highlights:
• Your choice of curriculum and resources, including faith based.
• Friendly, flexible BC certified teachers overseeing
the program
• Paper based or online options
• Graduation program
• $1000 grant per student
• Subject support teachers
For those parents who want to have a teacher involved with their
child’s learning and want to receive report cards and grade credits,
TLA offers the perfect DL option for enrolled students.
TLA strives to have a teacher assigned to each family that lives in
their community so that face to face visits are possible to develop a
supportive relationship. If there is a BC certified teacher in your
community that you would like to recommend let us know. There are
four visits, one to set up the year program and three meetings to review the student’s portfolio to determine marks for the report card.
Parents/students weekly email their teacher to report the weekly
learning.
TLA is not concerned about how many students enroll on the DL
program and discourage applicants wanting only money—there are
other programs that can do that. TLA is committed to integrity accountability and flexibility.
TLA’s HOMESCHOOL CENTER
Classes & Seminars
TLA offers a variety of fun and exciting classes for children as well as parent seminars. Call Sharon or Tanya at 604-572-7875 to
find out what classes have been planned or what classes you would like to have.
Grace Jorgensen and Allan Garneau are available to speak. Topics include How To Teach Science, How Children Learn,
Highschool and Post Secondary, Burn Out, The ACT of Parenting, Time Management, Super Mom, and more. Grace & Allan
travel throughout the Province and always enjoy meeting with homeschool families to provide information and encouragement.

The Homeschool Center has a computer lab, large classroom and a board room that can be rented for meetings. Call for rates
Computer Lab
TLA’s portable computer lab can travel to your community of homeschoolers to teach computer courses. A trained technician will
teach students and parents power point presentations, excel, print shop, Word and more. The computer lab will also be used as
orientation to the DL Program.

ORDER RESOURCES FROM THE HOMESCHOOL CENTER
It’s Like Getting Free School Books
For Traditional Homeschooling, TLA provides a credit of
$125.00 per registered student that can be used at the Home
School Center. Students enrolled on The Distributed Learning
Program are given a grant of $1000.00, part of which can also be
used as a credit at The Home School Center.
HOW TO CLAIM YOUR GRANT
•
•
Purchase educational materials and mail or fax us the receipts attached to a “Claim For Reimbursement” Form
mailed out in October.
Choose materials from our catalogue or from the Home
School Center, and their cost will be deducted directly from
your grant with TLA.

items that we order upon request, not necessarily what we keep
on our shelves for purchase. In most cases we keep a sample
copy for your perusal. Since parents have varying expectations,
and know what is best for their own children, TLA does not take
responsibility for content in all the materials listed. We urge parents to review the material before purchasing if possible, and if
not, to call for information. Orders received after our ordering
deadlines will be filled with in stock materials only.
HOW DO WE SET OUR PRICING?
The prices listed are based on what one might pay if the
items were ordered directly from the original supplier. Since we
do not always have the current pricing from suppliers, and since
we have to factor in GST, shipping costs and exchange, Prices

and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy, democratic and
pluralistic society and prosperous and sustainable economy”).

DL STARTER KITS
CHRISTIAN DL STARTER KITS
All curricula used in a DL program must meet the BC Learning Outcomes. Religious materials are permitted in your program because TLA is a Group 1 Independent School. TLA does not have a “boxed curriculum” which allows parents to select materials
they would prefer to use and the teacher then ensures the PLO’s are met. Suggested starter kits in the core subjects have been provided with yearly course overviews in each kit. Items can be substituted with other approved resources. Up to $250.00 per DL student may be special ordered if not in stock and must be ordered by July 15th. All book orders after July 15th will be filled with items
in stock only. After July 15th if items are not in stock then you will order directly and submit receipts for reimbursement. Traditional
Homeschoolers receipts due December 1st for a reimbursement on February 1st OR June 1st for a reimbursement on July 1st. If you
are on the DL program, your receipts are due November 1st for reimbursement in February or May 1st for July reimbursement

PARENTS – DO YOU KNOW YOUR
QUESTIONS
ANSWERS
Q1. Do you want your children to learn at home,
and are you seeking complete independence and
control in the education of your children?
If so, then you should REGISTER them as homeschoolers. This is the only
option that allows you to provide your own program with no monitoring or
accountability to the Ministry.
Q2. Do you want your children to learn at home,
and are you willing to be accountable to the Ministry for your program?
If so, then you should ENROL them in a DL or Distributed Learning Program. You are a partner in the teaching, but a BC Certified teacher is in
control and responsible for your children’s program, and will also have to
assess your children’s achievement and prepare written reports three times
during the year. Also, your learning resources must meet provincial
learning outcomes and be approved.
Q3. Is it important for your children to learn in a
religious environment, and be able to use Christian
(or other religious) Curriculum resources in your
DL Program?
If so, then you should ENROL them in an Independent School DL. Public
school DL or Distributed Learning Programs must be secular. You can use
religious materials only on your own time, since the program cannot give
school credit or reimbursement for any religious based curriculum or
course.
Q4. Do you want full support from a school that
understands home-schooling parents, one that is
committed to meeting the curricular and financial
needs of parents who are homeschooling independently or in a DL program?
If so, then you should REGISTER or ENROL with Traditional Learning

SOME DEFINITIONS Traditional Homeschooling: Parents are free to teach their child(ren) at home as long as they register the learners with a public
school in their school district, an independent school anywhere in the province or with a Distance Education school. The only obligation
parents have is to provide students with “a program”, which is undefined.
DL (Distributed Learning): Students can learn at home, but they are accountable to the Ministry of Education (must satisfy the learning outcomes of the
provincial curriculum). Courses are online, computer resident or paper-based, with instruction and evaluation under the direction of a BC Certified
teacher. The parent is a “teacher assistant”. Enrolling schools provide most learning resources free of charge (or by reimbursement up to specific levels) and may provide computer equipment for online use. Only Independent Schools can approve the use of religious-based resources or programs.
Note that the student will not receive any recognition from the Ministry of
Education for academic work unless enrolled and completing correspondence

WHY HOMESCHOOL?
Taking the first steps towards home education can seem daunting and
you may be feeling quite lost, unsure and even alone. Yet, parents
throughout BC are taking their children home to school for various
reasons. Some of the benefits are:
AM I QUALIFIED?
“But I’m not a certified teacher! Will I teach all that they are supposed to
learn? What if I don’t teach it all?” Concerned, loving parents often can do
more for their child that anyone else. A parent does not need to be a certified
Flexible Schedule – The hours of academic learning can be adjusted to teacher to teach their own and there is no correlation between educational

for the child. Whatever the obstacles, doubts and opposition that you may
encounter, being convinced that your child’s best interest will be served
should give you the confidence and courage to follow through with your
A Customized Learning Plan – One of the primary goals of

homeschooling parents/teachers is to see their children improve progressively in the academic basic skills, at their own pace and using materials that are suitable for them.
WHAT ABOUT SOCIALIZATION?
Individualized Teaching – Homeschooling accommodates the child's
age of readiness and has the advantage of teaching when the child's
window of learning is open. The child benefits from one on one time
with the parent/teacher.
When parents cannot bear to see the lights of learning go out in their
child's eyes or refuse to tolerate unacceptable behaviours acquired from
the school environment, they begin to ask, "is there not a better place to
learn"?
A PARENTS LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES
REGISTER
All children in British Columbia ages 6 to 16 years of age must be
registered with a local public school, a private school anywhere in BC
or with Distance Education before September 30. Funding is allocated
to the school where the student is registered and according to the
School Act, the School of registration has no obligation to provide any
services to the student apart from testing upon request.
Parents may choose to take their children out of a school program at
any time of the year to homeschool. Services however, may be restricted due to the fact that the school will not receive any homeschool
funding mid-year making the parent responsible for the cost of the
resources and services.
For each traditional homeschool student, a school receives 1/16 of the
grant allocated for full time students. This administration fee is intended for school use, although TLA offers a portion of that funding to
the family.
To register your child you are simply required to provide the school
with your child’s full name, address, phone number, birth date and
gender. To register with TLA please fill out registration form on page
8 and mail or fax to TLA.
PROVIDE AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
It is each parents individual responsibility to assure that an
"educational program" is being provided. Parents have the freedom to
teach their child in an atmosphere conducive to learning and in the
manner they choose.
Sending a child to school does not ensure proper social development. The
public is justifiably concerned about the socialization occurring in our schools
today. Without a doubt, a loving, home environment is the best social environment a young child could possible have. A young child learns good sociability primarily by watching and mirroring. Do you want your child to model
after you or their peers, after his teacher at school or his teacher at home?
HOW DO I CHOOSE A PROGRAM?
There are several approaches to homeschooling. The key objective of all home
school parents, whichever approach is used, is to provide an "educational
program" that will teach the basic skills and to ensure that continual improvement is being accomplished.
We are often asked what the "curriculum" is for certain grade levels. Since
curriculum is "what" students learn, and instruction is "how" they learn, parents can meet the outcomes of the curriculum and yet still choose how to teach
them and also the materials that will be used.
The "what" established by the Ministry of Education is listed in Integrated
Resource Packages (IRP's), and a summary of the expected learning outcomes
can be found in Appendix A of each IRP (learning outcomes can be found on
the Ministry of Education website: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/curric/lo.html ).

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Homeschooling through the high school years is quite different from
the elementary years. Although parents are confident when choosing
the homeschool option at elementary grade levels, the high school
years can seem to be a bit more daunting. When a private or public
school classroom is not an option, a parent is left with three alternatives.
1. A BC Distance Education school of which there are nine in the
province. They offer paper-based modules which are returned for
marking, or an online CONNECT program.
2. Enrolling with a DL (Distributed Learning) program offered
through a participating public of independent school. TLA offers
a DL program that allows students to graduate with the BC Dogwood Certificate. Their program is overseen by a BC certified
teacher. A graduation coordinator is on staff to offer supports as
well as subject specialists to assist with the difficult subject areas.
3. Traditional homeschooling through high school. Grace & Allan
have published a book/CD that will inform you and enable you to
prepare for post-secondary entrance without the BC Dogwood
Certificate. It is possible!
What You Need to Graduate
Every student in the graduation program (grades10-12) must pass
certain courses worth 4 credits toward 48 credits in total for core subjects. These courses include: Planning 10, Language Arts 10,11,12,
Math 10 and 11 or 12. (There are 3 math options: Essentials, Applications or Principles) Fine Arts and Applied Skills 10, 11 or 12, Social
Studies 10 and 11 or 12, Science 10 and 11 or 12, Physical Education
10 and 28 credits in elective courses. A Graduation portfolio is mandatory and is worth 4 credits )
Planning 10 (Replaces CAPP 10, 11 and 12)
This course helps students build skills needed to make choices for
their future. Topics covered are: understanding the grad program,
selecting their courses, exam requirements, how to develop the grad
portfolio, career choices, employability skills, job safety, finances,
budgeting, credit, health and nutrition, sexually submitted diseases,
drugs and road safety. TLA offers this course in a textbook format or
online and has removed sensitive portions.
Graduation Portfolio
A student cannot graduate without completing a Graduation portfolio.
A Graduation portfolio is a collection of evidence either electronic or
paper-based that proves the student has developed more than just academic skills. There are three parts to it:
A. Portfolio Core - 30% mark. Must complete 6 requirements.
1. Arts & Design: Respond to an art, performance, or design
work.
2. Community involvement and responsibility
3. Education and career planning: complete a grad transition plan.
4. Employability skills: complete 30 hours work or volunteer
5. Information Technology: Learn and use technology skills
6. Personal Health: Complete 80 hours of activity
B. Portfolio Choice - 50% choose one of the portfolio cores and
expand on it
C. Portfolio Presentation - 20% Present your portfolio choice in
some way such as: an interview, an event (science fair), an electronic or multimedia presentation, a performance, a community
event, a conversation with a teacher.
