INSTRUCTIONS - WHICH MUST BE OBSERVED.
WARNING
Before installing the Vigilant system Harvest Healthcare Ltd recommends carrying out a risk assessment to ascertain if this
product is suitable for the patient and the compatibility of the system to the bed or chair it is being used with.
Read and follow these Installation Instructions, particularly the Warnings and Cautions, before using your Vigilant system.
Failure to do so may result in injury or death to the patient in your care.
Use your alarm system in conjunction with your facility’s fall prevention program. This alarm system is not a substitute for
proper nursing care. The effectiveness of the alarm system relies on immediate response by the caregiver.
The alarm system and pressure pads may be disarmed / by passed by a cognitively aware or an uncooperative person
with only a few moments of lucidity. Properly assess each individual before the alarm system is used.
Keep the pressure pad flat at all times. If it is folded it may not function properly. Do not use the pressure pad if it has been
folded or creased.
Harvest pressure pads are not recommended for persons weighing less than 32 kg. Check if suitable for each individual
before use.
In the event that the Vigilant System changes owners, please supply this Instruction Manual to the new owner
Please test the Vigilant System after installation and then at regular intervals.
The Vigilant system must be connected to the nurse call system (with the correct cable) in order to trigger an alarm.
When using a mat with the Vigilant system ensure the cable does not form a trip or ligature hazard to the occupant.
When using the Vigilant system on a profile bed, or rise recliner chair, please ensure the cables do not get caught in the
mechanism.
CAUTION
Use care when connecting/disconnecting the alarm system to/from the nurse call system. Gently remove or connect the
plugs. Pulling on the cord may damage it resulting in system failure.
Do not immerse in liquid, or use a mat if it has been immersed in liquid.
The pressure pads and sensor pins are deisgned for use with the Harvest Vigilant systems only. Do not substitute any
other fall monitoring accessories.
Use only Harvest Healthcare approved spare parts. Failure to do so may cause improper operation or damage to the
alarm system and will i nvalidate your warranty.

BEFORE USING THIS SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST TIME:

Read through this instruction manual conscientiously from start to finish.
Please note in particular that the various safety instructions must be
observed.
Harvest Healthcare products bear the CE mark and meet all safety and functionality
requirements.
These safety requirements can only be met if the user is satisfied of the proper condition of
the product (including accessories) before use.

NON-COMPLIANT USE
All uses deviating from the intended purpose, which may also be hazardous as a result.
This includes for example:

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
3.1
GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
During the briefing, specific attention must be drawn to any potential dangers
which can be prevented despite correct operation. Before putting the product into
service for the first time, the Instruction Manual must be read conscientiously and
in detail by the user / care personnel.
DEFINITION OF THE GROUPS MENTIONED
OPERATOR
An operator is any natural or legal person who uses the equipment or on whose instruction
it is used (e.g. nursing homes, specialised retailers, health insurance companies, medical
suppliers).
Programing of the system should be carried out by competent trained personnel.
The service user should not have access to the magnetic key.
Use only spares and accessories supplied or approved by Harvest Healthcare.
USERS
Users are persons who as a result of their vocational training, experience or briefing are
authorised to operate the equipment or to carry out work on it.
Furthermore the user can recognise and avoid potential dangers and assess the
clinical condition of the service user.
PATIENT / OCCUPANT / SERVICE USER
QUALIFIED PERSONNEL
Qualified personnel are employees of the operator who as a result of their vocational
training or briefing are entitled to deliver, assemble, disassemble and transport the product.

Unplug the power supply before connecting or disconnecting any cables from the
system.
The mains cable must be free and not caught up in anything, as it gets carried
along when the bed height is adjusted. Otherwise, the mains cable may be torn
out of its strain relief and damaged. In addition, the mains plug may be pulled out
of its socket and electric leads exposed as a result.
Person in need of care, handicapped or infirm.

When connecting the mains plug do not use multiple sockets since liquids may
penetrate into these (fire hazard and electric shock).

SERVICING & MAINTENANCE
Servicing must only be carried out by competent / qualified persons
The system must not be used in rooms where there is a risk of explosion.
3.2
A technical check and/or safety inspection must be conducted at least once a year
and after a lengthy break in use.
Any defects, damage or signs of wear must be rectified without delay. Only original
spare parts from Harvest Healthcare may be used, otherwise all guarantees or
warranties will be excluded.
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR THE OPERATOR
With the help of this Instruction Manual, instruct each user in the safe operation of
this system before it is put into service for the first time.
Advise the user of any hazards which may occur if not handled correctly.
Only persons who have been properly instructed may operate this system. This
also applies for persons who only operate the system on a temporary basis.
3.3
SAFETY INFORMATION FOR THE USER
Ensure that the operator instructs you in the safe operation of this system.
In addition, pay particular attention to the general safety information as described in 3.1.
Programing of the system must only be carried out by suitably instructed persons or in the
presence of an instructed person.
If there is a suspected fault or damage, unplug the mains plug from the socket. Clearly
mark as “Out of Order” and take immediately out of service. After that please inform the
person in charge without delay.

Only original/approved accessories from Harvest Healthcare may be used, otherwise all
guarantees or warranties will be excluded.
3.7
SERVICE LIFE & DISPOSAL
The normal service life for the system in domestic use is approximitely 5 years. The system must not be disposed of as normal domestic waste after its service life has expired.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTION
Do not immerse electrical components in water but just them with a damp cloth.
The electrical components must not be cleaned with a high pressure cleaner or
water jet. Only disinfection by wiping is allowed.
Always wear waterproof gloves when cleaning and disinfecting to avoid skin
irritation.

DURING INSTALLATION THE VIGILANT SYSTEM MUST NOT BE
CONNECTED TO THE POWER SUPPLY.
INSTALLATION OF VIGKIT1 TO A BED OTHER THAN A WOBURN 3/4/5/6
To use the Vigilant System on a bed other than a Woburn 3/4/5/6 you will need to use a
HLV301M pressure mat under the service user. You will also need the HLD125 SMPS
power supply if your bed does not have a compatible Limoss control system.

Attach Vigilant unit to the bed chasis, plugging the sensor pad into the the Seat Pad
Sensor socket (see page 14).
To test the system, lie on the mattress and activate the Vigilant system (see pages 20-21 for
operating instructions). Wait for 10 seconds to ensure the system does not give a false alarm.
Get off the mattress and the alarm should sound after 2 seconds.
If the alarm does not sound the cause could be that the mattress you are using is too thick. In
this case place the sensor mat on top of the mattress (again over the static non-moving area)
and re test the system.
Place the mat on the non-moving section and ensure the cable cannot get caught up in the
bed mechanism.
Place the mattress on the bed ensuring that the sensor mat stays in place. Plug the pressure
pad into the port marked Seat Pad Sensor.
Plug the handset into the control box port marked Handset.
To test the system, lie on the mattress and activate the Vigilant system (see pages 20-21
for Calibration instructions). Wait for 10 seconds to ensure the system does not give a false
alarm. Get off the matrass and the alarm should sound after 2 seconds.

It is important that you do not fold or crease the pressure mat. If the
mat becomes creased it should be replaced immediately.
If the alarm does not sound the cause could be that the mattress is
too thick. In this case place the sensor mat on top of the mattress
(again over the static non-moving area) and re-test the system.
INSTALLATION OF THE OPTIONAL SEAT PAD
Place the seat pad (optional extra) on the centre
of the seat. If using a rise recliner chair run the
cable from the seat pad so that it does not
become trapped in the seat mechanism.
Run the cable from the seat pad to the Vigilant unit; please
ensure that the cable does not become a trip or ligature
hazard. If the cable is of insufficient length, add cable
extension
(see back cover).

Remove the headboard section of the bed and lay it down on a flat surface.
Insert the sensor pin into the lower end of the actuator as shown in picture below.

bottom actuator mounting
Unwrap the sensor pin and prepare to insert it into the hole in the lower end of the actuator.
The pin has yellow spacer fitted with a tooth that locates into the
sensor pin. It is important that this pin is located correctly before the
pin is fitted to the bed.
The flat surface on the pin must be fitted to the bed the correct way
round. Failure to do this will damage the pin.
The pin has nylon spacer washers; ensure they are positioned
correctly.

CALIBRATING THE SYSTEM
ENABLING AND DISABLING THE SYSTEM.
Swipe the magnetic key over the area indicated on the top of the handset to enable or disable
the system. When buttons 1 and 2 are green the system is armed (Fig.1).
When you first power up the system (after following the
installation instructions on pages 12-15) the system will
require calibration.
If the service user enables the system swipe the key to disable the system (buttons 1 and 2
will turn orange Fig.2). Once the service user is back in the bed/chair enable the system by
again swiping the key (buttons 1 and 2 turn green). You must disable the Vigilant system
before you can reset the nurse call system.
NOTE:
Before calibration insure that there is no other weight
on the bed; the Vigilant system will need to register
the weight of the bed without the occupant.
DEACTIVATING THE SOUNDER IN THE HANDSET. (SILENT ALARM)
Enter programing mode by holding the magnetic key over the area indicated on the top of the
handset for 5 seconds (until buttons one and 2 turn red Fig. 3).

Prepare the bed for the occupant (this includes
fitting the mattress to the bed, and bedding).

Hold the magnetic key over contact area for approximately
ten seconds until buttons 1 and 2 turn red (Fig.3) When
buttons 1 and 2 turn red you are in program mode.

The next stage calibrates the sensor pin to the control
box; this only has to be done once for each pin.
Press button 3 (button 3 will illuminate orange Fig. 4). to show the handset sounder is
disabled) use the system as normal and the handset sounder will be silenced. Please note
the Vigilant system must be connected to the nurse call system in order to
trigger an alarm.
Hold button 2 down for 7 seconds, the handset will bleep indicating the calibration is
completed and the system will enable (button 1 and 2 turn green Fig.1).

To re-activate the handset sounder carry out the same procedure as above, pressing button
three when in programing mode with button 3 illuminated will re -activate the handset
sounder(the orange illumination on button three will extinguish)
Disable the system by swiping the magnet over the contact area.
DISABLING NURSE CALL FUNCTION ON HANDSET
The system is now fully operational and ready to use (see pages 22-23).
Enter programing mode by holding the magnetic key over the area indicated on the top of the
handset for 5 seconds (until buttons one and 2 turn red Fig. 3) press button 3, buttons 1 and
2 will start to flash to indicate the nurse call function has been disabled. The lights will show the
same colour’s as normal but will flash.

ACTIVATING YOUR VIGILANT HANDSET
CONNECTING TO YOUR NURSE CALL SYSTEM
Use the Magnetic Unlocking Key against the Magnetic sensor located at the top of the Vigilant
handset (the area marked Swipe Key Here).
If you wish to connect the alarm to a nurse call
system, make sure you have the correct lead.
CALIBRATION AND PROGRAMMING MODE
The most common type of lead is either a mono
or stereo connection*. This can be identified
by counting the number of black rings on the
connection end; mono leads have one ring and
stereo leads have two.
Hold key on sensor area (Fig. 1)
*Dependant on your nurse call system you may
need another type of lead entirely. If this is the case,
please call our office and we will help to identify the
specific nurse call lead that you require.

care not to damage the pins in the connector plug.
Connecting any other handset other then the Vigilant handset into
the Vigilant Control Box may result in malfunction or irreprable
damage to the system.
