They get dirty every day with mud and water play. Children create their own explorer bag with binoculars and boxes to capture sounds and treasures. Children learn how to use a compass and “geocache” for treasures. They create maps and a 3-D model of the neighborhood! They will be challenged to a tough mudder obstacle course on our playscape! There will be neighborhood explorations and scavenger hunts. Children can create their own tents outside as if they were camping. It’s adventure time! Children are challenged to use tools and basic engineering principles- pulley, wedge, wheel and axle, lever, screw, and inclined plane- to make the longest bridge and the tallest building and to try to build everything they have ever dreamed of building! Children use art as a form of construction and sculpturethrough paper, clay, and recycled materials. They’ll experiment with rainbow eruptions, flubber recipes, water filtration systems, and catapults. Full steam ahead! Scraper bike crews were started to maintain a level of excellence, and members must abide by a code. Children will create their own code rap and make art for bikes and art out of bicycle parts to show in a Kidical Mass in neighborhood. Erik Fyfe, founder of Ciderfest Atlanta, will make cider with us using a bicycle-powered machine. SOPO volunteers will bring their repair unit to work with the children to disassemble and reassemble bicycle parts, learn how to use tools, and blow bubbles with a bike pump! Children are encouraged to bring their bikes on the last day! Enjoy some happy fun time with favorite local Atlanta artist, Kyle Brooks. Collaborate on special art projects, sing silly songs, and listen to stories with Mr. Brooks. Children will create their own stickers, be challenged to a collaborative sharpie slam, paint signs, and screen-print t-shirts just like Kyle. Shake your own butter and bake your own bread! Children use authentic kitchen utensils to prepare food, cook, and eat. They will dye fabrics with vegetables and spices and are encouraged to set themselves a beautiful table or picnic. They will cut vegetables for community soup and make sun-brewed teas with fresh herbs. Children will also have the opportunity to cool down with fruit popsicles and test their solar ovens on some s’mores! July 7-11 Molly Rose Freeman Camp July 14-18 Evereman Camp July 21-25 Urban Farm Camp July 28-August 1 Whirled Peace Camp Work with the elusive local artist, Evereman, for the week. Children will use special tools and work on art projects to share with the community through woodburning and carving and some basic principles of furniture building. They will design together and experiment with light and projections just like Evereman! They will recreate their own Free Art Friday to drop art in secret places around the neighborhood. Work with Khari Diop, urban farmer at the East Lake Community Gardens. Children visit farm friends at the gardens as well as have the farm friends visit them at school! There will be sheep, pigs, chickens, goats, and Peri, the dog. They help with garden projects and beautify the gardens. They will plant seedlings and help set up tables at a Farmer’s Market at the school inspired by the East Lake Farmer’s Market. Children define what peace means to them through daily practices of mindfulness. They will create a walking labyrinth in the garden to slowly trace their steps from the day before. They will create rain sticks to inspire them to be present. Kathy Lytle and her crystal singing bowls visit to let the children experience vibrations and frequencies. There will be zen gardens in the sand and nature mandalas. Children will make and watch peace pinwheels twirl throughout the garden and experiment with shadow, light, and reflection. Namaste. Public art artist, Molly Rose Freeman, joins camp to show us how to paint a mural. Children splatter and spin color works of art similar to the style of her work. They will paint reclaimed wood and add them in different places in the neighborhood. Children will experiment with cement and recycled materials to think about negative space in design. This camp is all about random acts of kindness and beauty. Popular local artist and elusive friend, CatLanta, will join us to help spread our work!
