July 2014 - Battlefield Council of the Knights of Columbus

Volume 7 Issue 7
July 2014
Brothers All:
Happy New Year! This fraternal year is special for Battlefield Council as it is the 25 th
anniversary of our Council Charter which was signed on 25 January 1990. We are now starting to
work on the plans to celebrate our anniversary so if you have any ideas that you think should be
considered, please pass them on to me or one of the other officers.
I had the opportunity to attend the State Pre-Organizational meeting at Holy Cross Academy on
Saturday, 21 June, and learned that the State Deputy’s theme for this year is “Be Faith In Action”.
This year, as in previous years, will be a busy one for Battlefield Council and I reflected on this
theme while finalizing the Council calendar. We have a lot of activities planned and the assistance of each Brother
Knight in the Council is important for the ongoing effort to maintain and grow. Your help is more important now
than it has ever been.
With that said, there are three critical positions that have caught my immediate attention and need to be addressed
now at the beginning of the new fraternal year. Worthy Past Grand Knight Joe McEuen is moving on to other tasks
and Worthy Chancellor John White as the Membership Director needs someone (or two) to assist him with the
recruitment and retention of new Knights. The second position of note is that of the leader of the Rosary prior to
each Council meeting. Brother Frank Connors has led the Rosary for 10 years and will be the Faithful Navigator of
Rappahannock Assembly where he will have his hands full and may not be able to attend all meetings. Finally,
Brother Paul Schulz has asked for relief after many years as Fireworks Committee Chairman . This is our biggest
fundraising effort and requires some effort throughout the year. Luckily, all of the incumbents are still in the Council
and are available to train you as needed. Please let me know if you are interested in taking on any of these critical
positions in the Council.
The installation ceremony for this year’s Council officers will occur on Tuesday, 8 July, starting at 7:30 pm. I
encourage all brothers to attend the ceremony and congratulate the new officers at the reception following. Wives
and families are also invited to attend and observe this wonderful ceremony and support your Council officers.
It will come up fast, so go ahead and put this year’s Council family picnic on your family’s August calendar now.
The Council family picnic will be held at the Lake of the Woods Sweetbriar Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, 3 August,
1:00 to 4:00 pm. I hope to see you all there for the food, fun, and fellowship.
Finally, I would like to thank our outgoing Grand Knight, Brother Andy Taylor, SK, and all of his officers for
their service during the 2013–14 Fraternal Year. I look forward to serving you as your Grand Knight and I ask all to
pray for the your new Council officers as they assume their duties and for the Council as a whole as we move forward
into our 25th anniversary year. The bar has indeed been set very high, but with your help we can achieve our goals in
this new Fraternal Year.
Vivat Jesus,
Bob Fitzgerald

PAST GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
All good things must come to an end and my term as your Grand Knight has come to an end. I
would not be honest if I did not say that the year has been one of humility, pride, and education. I
now have memories, some good and some not so good, that I will never forget.
To this year’s Officers and Program Chairmen, I am forever thankful for your tireless devotion
to our Order. Your support in the myriad of activities and events the Council conducted or were
asked to support left nothing to be desired. I thank each one of you and your spouses for all your
time and efforts in continuing Battlefield Council’s legacy as the best Council in the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
I extend my congratulations to, and solicit your support for, our new Grand Knight Bob
Fitzgerald and his Officers. I could not have asked for a better Deputy than Bob and I am confident that under his
leadership, Battlefield Council will soar to even greater success in Fraternal Year 2014–2015.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank the ladies of our Council for your generous support in sharing your
husbands with us. Without your support nothing that the Council accomplished would have been possible. And to
Betty Case, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, I cannot thank you and the Auxiliary ladies enough for all that you do
in supporting the Council and the Church.
Fraternally,
Andy Taylor, SK
Past Grand Knight
HONOREES
Knight of the Month for June
Brother Greg Gordon
The June Knight of the Month is Sir Knight Greg
Gordon. Brother Greg devotes much of his time and
energy coordinating the ushers for the Masses at Saint
Patrick Parish. He can also be found at various Honor
America Corps activities as well as Fourth Degree
ceremonial events not to mention the volunteer hours he
devotes to Council charity works. This “behind the
scene” Brother often goes unrecognized for all he does
for the Church, the Council, and the community. It is
with great pleasure and gratitude that I present to all, the
June Knight of the Month Sir Knight Greg Gordon.
“Be Faith in Action!”
Family of the Month for June
John and Kathy Belrose
Sir Knight John Belrose and his wife Kathy are long
term dedicated supporters of Saint Patrick Parish, the
Council, and the Ladies Auxiliary. Both are regular
fixtures around the Council, Assembly, and the Ladies
Auxiliary. Brother John is a Past Grand Knight and
Recorder of the Council. This upcoming Fraternal Year
he will serve as the Council Advocate. Sir Knight John
serves on the District Color Corps Team and can be
counted on when manpower needs arise for Fourth
Degree ceremonies. His wife Kathy is a Past President of
the Ladies Auxiliary and continues to be a strong
supporter of that organization as well as the Council.
When there is a Knights of Columbus activity, be it at the
State, District, or Council level, you will find John and
Kathy volunteering their time and efforts ensuring the
success of the event.

FIREWORKS are Here!!
Thank you Brother Knights for your superb support
of the Fireworks stand throughout the sales
period. Don't forget July 5th at 1000 we will be
conducting site tear down, tent storage, product
inventory (hopefully very limited) and final clean
up. We need about 10 Knights to make easy work of the
end of this fund raising effort.
Please let me know if you can help with Tear Down

Membership
Brothers, we ended the Fraternal Year with a net
increase of 22 in our membership of Knights bringing
our total membership to 379. Unfortunately we did not
meet our Associate Member quota, but we did meet and
exceed our new Insurance Member quota of 9 by adding
10 new Insurance Members. This is something to be
proud of because our Order’s insurance program is one
of the main benefits of membership. Therefore it is our
duty to see that as many members as possible take
advantage of insurance for themselves and their families.
This start of of the new Fraternal Year is also a great
time to recognize our Membership Director for the past
many years, Sir Knight Joe McEuen, PGK. Joe, the
Council owes you a hearty round of congratulations for a
job well done in recruiting and retention. Thank you
Brother Joe.
As the new Fraternal Year starts, we can expect new
membership quotas and the need to resume our
recruiting efforts. We also have a new Membership
Director, namely Sir Knight John White, who is also our
Council’s Chancellor. Please give him your full
cooperation in recruiting.
We are planning our initial First Degree
Exemplification for the Fraternal Year on August 12. So,
go out there and get some candidates.
What’s a good reason for becoming a Knight?
After giving it some thought, one new member recently
said “Because it makes you a better Catholic! Can there
be a better reason?
Recruiting is every Knight’s job. Let’s do it.
Youth Activities
Saturday June 14, Fr. Fimian organized a fairly robust
group of folks ages 20 to 70 that have shown interest in
supporting the youth programs at St Patrick’s. There were
a lot of great ideas and discussion about how to get, and
keep the youth of the parish involved.
During the meeting Lisa Schumacher brought to the
attention of everyone that one of the biggest challenges
from the organizational and support side of the youth
program was adults who were “qualified” to participate in
the youth programs. There are plenty of parents and older
siblings that are involved on the fringe, but cannot
directly support activities due to Diocesan regulations
requiring all adults be trained in Child Protection, and be
Authorized Drivers. This requirement limits the number
of activities that can be supported; some never occur.
When this support is not available, young people depend
on a parent to drive them to and from an event. For
instance, they must all be delivered to the bowling alley,
or Lake Anna, or where ever the activity might take place.
When many of our young people cannot secure
transportation, interest wanes and then eventually dies.
One idea is to build a large roster of qualified adults
who could provide their time and services in support of
the Parish’s youth program.
As the Council’s Youth Program Director I agreed to
bring this plea for assistance from Fr. Fimian and Mrs.
Schumacher to our Council. The intent would be to have a
good number of Knights that were qualified and could be
called upon to support various youth activities, both
planned in advance and on short notice.
Keeping our Catholic youth engaged, interested, and
active should be a priority for all of us. This is the next
generation of Knights, Priests, religious and lay persons
that will be charged with preserving our Faith and
Catholic heritage. I believe that St Patrick’s and
Battlefield Council could become the model that other
parishes measure up to.
But in order to become qualified several things must
be done first. More information will be forthcoming as we
chart a course for action to support our young people.

Brother Ed Fortunato arranged a recent fishing charter
on the Potomac River on Friday June 13. Brothers Paul
Gerrick, Steve Ruggiero and John Laterra joined in the
fun. Big stripers were caught by all with John catching
the largest (at least he says so!!) and we filled our limit
by 1050 AM. Check out the fishing crew in the photo.
The boat normally sails from Reedville VA but the
fishing was better in the Potomac so that is where we
went. If you are interested in another charter from
Reedville VA vicinity, for stripers or Spanish mackerel,
or from Cape Hatteras, contact Ed Fortunato
