Layers of the Atmosphere Foldable
Objective:
Introduction to the layers of the atmosphere and the properties of each
Procedure:
1. Fold the provided legal size paper in half (landscape)
2. Create a five (5) tab foldable using the provided legal size paper.
3. To make sure each flap is approximately the same size measure the height of the paper and divide by 5 (should be
approximately 4 cm)
4. Research the different layers of the atmosphere using the resources provided.

• Internet (type in ‘layers of the atmosphere’ in Yahoo!)
• Reference books

For each outside flap provide the following:
• Name of the layer
• A drawing of the common objects found within that layer
For each layer identify the following information on the flap glued to the composition book:
• Altitude range of the layer
• Temperature range of the layer
Identify the following information on the flap opposite the one glued to the composition book:
• Characteristics of the layer. Information that should be included:
1. Which layer has the highest temperature?
2. Which layer has the lowest temperature?
3. Who discovered the layer?
4. What separates one layer from the other?
5. Which layer burns up meteoroids that enter the earth’s atmosphere
6. Which layer contains the ozone layer and what does it do?
7. Which layer contains most the clouds and all of the earth’ weather?
8. Which layer contains all of the satellites?
9. Which layer has contains ions responsible for radio waves
10. In which layer do airplanes fly?
11. Any other interesting information you can find about the layers.
