¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
Why choose Spanish? Spanish is a language that is spoken all over the
world. There are 21 official Spanish
Spanish-speaking
speaking countries. There are other countries
that have extremely large Spanish
Spanish-speaking
speaking populations, like Belize and the United
States, but the official language is ________________.
Spanish is a romance language
language.. This means that it evolved over many years
from spoken Latin. There are 5 romance languages: Romanian,, ______________,
___________________, _______________
________________,
_, and ______________________.
All of these were
e created from Latin as the Romans occupied what is now
Europe. When the Romans occupied Spain, they spoke Latin. But the Moors also
occupied Spain for about 700 years and they spoke Arabic, so the languages mixed
to create Spanish.
Today, Spanish is st
still
ill changing because of technology and global influences.
Many English words are being used in Spanish
Spanish-speaking
speaking countries. Also, Spanish is
influencing other languages. Are there Spanish words that you already understand?

**The letters ch, ll, rr, are no longer separate letters, but
dictionaries prior to 1994 will show them as separate.
There are also differences in Spanish punctuation, as you probably noticed
above. Here are some things to keep in mind when we are reading and
writing. Let’s take a look...
¿ ? Questions in Spanish begin with an inverted question mark, and end with a
regular question mark. Here is an example:
¿Cuál es la fecha? _________________________
¡ ! Exclamations in Spanish begin with an inverted exclamation mark. Here is an
example:
¡Qué bien!
_________________________
’ The only accent mark in Spanish moves from left to right. It is only used over
vowels: á, é, í, ó, ú. Try copying these words with accents:
sábado______________ Perú_____________ bolígrafo_______________
~ This is called a tilde and is only ever used over the letter n, like this ñ or Ñ.
